Chapter 309: Chapter 308: Brewing Danger
Jun De lived in a small village at the outskirts of a small Sect. His village was one of the many villages that served the Sect and provided it with small offers every year in return for protection.
Also, any martial practitioner that emerged from the village would become a member of the Sect. The Sect also chose many slaves from the villages to work for them.
Jun De was proud of his own village. After all, the last martial practitioner to join the Sect from the villages emerged from his village.
Jun De walked swiftly, greeting the many people he met on his way. He was headed for the bushes that surrounded the village.
In the bushes, swine, sheep and many other animals lived in it, feeding off the rich grass. The grasses were extremely rich because of the Qi that was concentrated in the Sect that was at the centre of the villages.
There were also a few beasts within the bushes but they were very rare to see and those that they saw were quickly dispatched by the martial practitioners of the Sect.
Jun De entered the bush and checked the traps he had set up earlier. His traps were wisely placed and every week, he caught many rabbits and other rodents. When he was lucky, he even caught sheep and swine.
He walked through the bush and saw his first trap.
"Sigh, empty" Jun De's eyelids drooped but he only shrugged his shoulders. This was the first trap out of many others. There was sure to be a good catch.
He had killed a boar two days before but his mother only used fresh pork to prepare the sweet and sour pork.
"Hmm" Jun De rubbed his stomach and strengthened his resolve. "I must find a boar before it becomes late"
He checked his trap properly before moving on to another trap. A smile crept up his face as he walked towards it. This trap was definitely not empty.
A large rabbit had its feet stuck in Jun De's trap as blood poured from the wound. It struggled but it was all futile, it was never getting free.
Jun De walked towards it and drew his dagger. In a simple motion, he killed the rabbit. Jun De took care to not damage the wounded leg as he removed the trap. The rabbit was very large, three times larger than the normal size but to Jun De, this size was normal if not lacking.
The Qi within the bush was very nutritious for animals and it made them grow larger than normal. Jun De had seen many rabbits that reached his kneecaps.
"Alright" Jun De heaved and tied a rope around the rabbit's neck which he slung over his shoulders. He had not forgotten his goal in the bush.
Time passed as Jun De walked all over the place, checking his traps for swine. It was only when it was dusk that he finally found a boar standing still in one of his traps.
Its stomach was impaled by three sharp bars of wood and blood dripped from the wound. It regarded Jun De coldly and grunted but Jun De was not fooled.
The boar was already on its last legs.
He drew his dagger and dropped his loot for the day. It was three rabbits and two large rodents unique to Western Plains.
Jun De was not sadistic. He moved quickly and in one move, he ended the life of the boar with his dagger.
"Hahaha! Sweet and Sour Pork, here I come" Jun De giggled and covered his mouth. "Ah no. Only girls giggle"
He did not dally and lifted the boar before resting it on his shoulders. Jun De's strength was unbecoming of his physique and even though he looked simple without any muscle mass, Jun De could easily throw another man twice his size in hand wrestling.
The boar was no exception. He heaved deep breaths as he bent to pick the earlier loot and made his way out of the bush.
"It is already getting late. Mama would be waiting for me" Jun De quickened his pace as he mumbled a short rhyme about him eating sweet and sour pork. Nobody could understand the joy he felt.
The journey out of the bush was short but when Jun De reached the village, he felt a downcast mood wash over him. This mood was strengthened when he entered it.
The place was a mess. Dust billowed through the air as the many buildings that surrounded Jun De laid on the ground as mere rubble.
"What happened here?" Jun De walked slowly. A sense of apprehension had already confounded him.
