The Nightmare City

Chapter 3: The Chase

**Part 3: "The Chase"**

The sound of heavy footsteps reverberates through the building, the ground beneath Shin's feet trembling as if the very walls are shaking in fear. His pulse quickens, his breath shallow, and for a brief moment, he considers running in the opposite direction. But the urgency inside him won't allow it. Whatever's coming, he can't outrun it. Not this time.

Instead, Shin moves toward the exit, trying to ignore the rising panic in his chest. The photograph, still tucked safely in his pocket, feels like a weight in his side, pulling at him with every step. He can't let it go. Not now. It's his only clue, his only connection to the past, the people he doesn't remember. The hum of the building is growing louder, almost deafening, filling his mind with an overwhelming sense of pressure.

The footsteps grow louder, closer, and Shin knows it's only a matter of time before the creature catches up to him. The walls of the building are closing in, and the hallway ahead seems to stretch endlessly, like a tunnel with no end.

He turns the corner sharply, his shoes sliding on the cracked floor. The building seems to twist around him, each turn more disorienting than the last, like the city itself is alive and toying with him. He doesn't know what's worse: the monsters hunting him, or the creeping sense that this place, this nightmare, is designed to keep him trapped.

Just as he's about to reach the next door, a deep, guttural roar shakes the air. The sound is deafening, sending a jolt of fear through his spine. Shin spins around to see a massive shadow looming in the hallway, its glowing eyes piercing the darkness. The creature is enormous, towering above him like a predator closing in on its prey. Its mouth is wide open, filled with rows of sharp teeth, dripping with an eerie, glowing substance that sizzles against the floor.

Shin's heart hammers in his chest, his instincts screaming at him to run, but there's nowhere left to hide. The creature steps forward, its claws scraping against the floor with an unnerving screech. Its eyes never leave Shin's, and he feels an overwhelming sense of dread wash over him. This monster isn't just hunting him; it's savoring the chase.

A strange, sharp pain shoots through Shin's head, and he stumbles, dropping to his knees as the room around him warps. The photograph slips from his pocket, fluttering to the floor, and for a brief moment, everything freezes. The creature's movements slow to a crawl, the air heavy with an unnatural stillness.

And then, the voice comes again—soft, almost a whisper, but clear as day. *Remember.*

Shin gasps, the pain in his head intensifying. It's like a dam has burst inside his mind, memories flooding to the surface. Faces, places, fragmented scenes that don't make sense, but feel so familiar. He sees the woman from the photograph—her face clearer now, though her name still eludes him. She's smiling, her eyes filled with warmth, and in that moment, Shin feels a connection—a bond that transcends time and space. But just as quickly, the memory shatters, and the creature's roar brings him back to the present.

The pain in his head subsides, but the memory is gone, slipping through his fingers like sand. Shin blinks, trying to focus. The monster is still there, but its movements seem slower now, as if something is holding it back. A strange feeling stirs in Shin's chest, a sense of power he can't explain. He doesn't know why, but for the first time, he feels like he has some control over the situation.

The creature lurches forward again, but this time, Shin doesn't hesitate. He's not running. He's not afraid. The pull of the building, the hum, the flickering memories—everything is converging. He feels a surge of energy he's never known before, a surge that comes from deep within him, like it's always been there, waiting to be awakened.

Without thinking, he reaches out, his hand glowing faintly with an otherworldly light. The creature stops dead in its tracks, its eyes wide with confusion and fear. For a moment, the city itself seems to pause, as if it's holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.

Shin's voice comes out in a low, almost desperate whisper. "I know you're not real," he says, though his words feel hollow in the air. "You're just a shadow, a fear... and I'm not afraid of you."

The creature growls, its form flickering like a mirage. For a moment, it seems to hesitate, unsure of what to do next. Shin holds his ground, his heart pounding, the strange light in his hand growing brighter with every passing second.

Then, with a deafening roar, the creature lunges at him again.

This time, Shin is ready.

With a burst of energy, he thrusts his hand forward, and the light explodes outward in a shockwave. The creature screams as the light envelops it, its form disintegrating into nothingness, like smoke in the wind. Shin watches in stunned silence as the monster fades away, leaving nothing behind but the faintest trace of a dark mist.

The hum dies down, and the city seems to exhale, the tension lifting for the moment. Shin's body trembles from the effort, and he collapses to his knees, gasping for air. His head is still spinning, the remnants of the memory lingering in the back of his mind, but he doesn't have time to dwell on it. The monster is gone, but he knows it won't be the last one.

Shin stands up shakily, wiping the sweat from his brow. He takes a deep breath, trying to steady himself. This place, this Nightmare City, is more than just a dream. It's real, and it's out to break him. But as long as he can fight, he won't let it win.

The hum returns, faint at first, but growing stronger. The city is shifting again, the walls groaning under the pressure. He can feel it—a new fragment of his memory, calling to him from deep within the heart of the city. It's his only chance to find the answers he so desperately needs.

With renewed determination, Shin begins walking forward, ready to face whatever comes next.
