The Omega who Killed her Alpha

Chapter 17: The Rescue

The night was suffocatingly quiet, broken only by the occasional murmur of guards patrolling the council's holding cells. Adira crouched in the shadow of a crumbling wall, her heart pounding as she studied the fortress-like structure ahead. Torchlight flickered along the perimeter, casting eerie shadows that danced across the stone.

"This is insane," Finn whispered, his voice trembling.

Kane shot him a sharp look. "Keep your voice down."

Adira didn't take her eyes off the guards, her focus narrowing as she tried to pick out patterns in their patrols. "How many are there?"

"Too many," Kane muttered. "But not enough to stop us if we're smart."

Finn's nervous fidgeting grated on Adira's nerves, but she understood his fear. This wasn't just dangerous—it was a death sentence if they were caught.

"Dorian's cell is in the east wing," Kane said, his voice low and steady. "Guards rotate every fifteen minutes. We'll have a small window once they change shifts."

Adira nodded. "And if he's too injured to move?"

"Then we carry him," Kane replied without hesitation.

Finn looked like he might be sick. "And what if we don't make it out?"

Adira glanced at him, her voice firm. "We will. Focus on the plan."

Kane handed Adira a small vial of clear liquid. "Smoke powder. Break it if things go south. It'll buy us a few seconds."

She nodded, tucking the vial into her pocket.

As the guards shifted positions, Kane motioned for them to move. They slipped through the shadows, their steps silent against the cobblestones. Every nerve in Adira's body was on edge, the weight of the moment pressing down on her.

They reached the outer wall, crouching low as a pair of guards passed by. Adira held her breath, her pulse racing. When the guards disappeared around the corner, Kane gestured to a small, rusted gate at the base of the wall.

Finn hesitated. "That's our way in?"

"Unless you've got a better idea," Kane said dryly.

Adira knelt by the gate, her fingers fumbling with the lock. The mechanism was old, but stubborn, and every click of her tools sounded deafening in the silence.

"Hurry," Kane urged, his gaze darting to the corner where the guards had vanished.

Adira bit her lip, her hands steady despite the pressure. Finally, the lock gave way with a soft click. She pushed the gate open just enough for them to slip through, the hinges groaning in protest.

Inside, the holding cells were dimly lit, the air heavy with the stench of damp stone and unwashed bodies. Adira's stomach churned at the thought of what Dorian must have endured here.

"East wing," Kane whispered, leading the way.

They moved quickly but carefully, staying close to the walls to avoid detection. The sound of muffled voices reached Adira's ears, and she froze, her hand instinctively reaching for the blade hidden under her cloak.

Kane peered around the corner, his expression grim. "Two guards outside the door. We'll need to take them out quietly."

Adira nodded, her grip tightening on the hilt of her blade. She exchanged a glance with Kane, and they moved as one.

Kane struck first, his knife slicing through the air in a swift, precise motion. The guard crumpled without a sound. Adira lunged at the second guard, her blade finding its mark before he could raise the alarm.

Finn hovered behind them, his face pale but his resolve steady.

The door to the cellblock creaked as Kane pushed it open, the sound echoing through the narrow hallway. Adira's breath caught in her throat as she stepped inside, her eyes scanning the row of iron-barred cells.

"Dorian," she whispered, her voice urgent.

A faint groan answered her, and she rushed toward the sound. Dorian was slumped against the wall of his cell, his face bruised and bloodied, but his eyes flickered open as she approached.

"Adira?" His voice was weak but laced with disbelief.

"We're getting you out of here," she said, her fingers already working on the lock.

Kane stood guard at the entrance, his posture tense. "Hurry up. We don't have much time."

The lock finally gave way, and Adira pushed the door open, kneeling beside Dorian.

"Can you stand?" she asked.

He gritted his teeth, nodding. "Barely."

Finn stepped forward, his fear momentarily overshadowed by determination. "I'll help."

Between the two of them, they managed to get Dorian to his feet. He leaned heavily on Finn, his breaths labored.

"Move," Kane barked, his tone leaving no room for argument.

They slipped back through the hallway, every step feeling like an eternity. The tension was suffocating, and Adira's nerves were stretched to their breaking point.

As they reached the outer gate, a shout echoed behind them.

"Stop them!"

Adira's heart lurched. Kane turned, his blade already in hand. "Go! I'll hold them off."

"No," Adira said, her voice firm. "We stick together."

"We don't have time for this!" Kane snapped.

The sound of boots pounding against the stone grew louder. Finn's eyes were wide with fear, and Dorian's weight was dragging him down.

Adira made a decision. She pulled the vial of smoke powder from her pocket and smashed it against the ground.

A thick cloud of smoke erupted, filling the air and obscuring their movements.

"Run!" she shouted, grabbing Dorian's arm and pulling him forward.

They stumbled through the gate, the shouts of the guards fading behind them. Adira's lungs burned from the smoke, her vision blurred, but she didn't stop.

Kane appeared beside her, his blade slick with blood. "Keep moving!"

The city blurred around them as they ran, the adrenaline driving them forward.

They didn't stop until they reached the safety of an abandoned warehouse on the edge of the district. Adira collapsed against the wall, her chest heaving.

Dorian sank to the floor, his face pale but his eyes burning with determination.

"You came for me," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Adira met his gaze, her expression hard. "You have answers. We need them."

Dorian nodded, his jaw tightening. "Then you'd better listen carefully. Because this is bigger than you think."

The tension in the room was electric, the weight of his words hanging heavy in the air.

Outside, the sound of distant sirens cut through the night, a reminder that their enemies were

still hunting.

And Adira knew—this was only the beginning.
