The Omega who Killed her Alpha

Chapter 7: Chapter 7: The Bargain

James stared at the broken wine glass on the floor, his jaw clenched tight. The tension in the room was suffocating, and Sarah felt it press against her chest as she stood near the door. She should leave—every part of her screamed to—but something about the way he stood, shoulders rigid and fists curling at his sides, made her stay.

He didn't look at her, didn't acknowledge her presence, but his voice cut through the silence like a blade.

"Do you always listen in on private conversations, Miss Roberts?"

Her heart skipped. So, he had noticed.

"I didn't mean to," she said quickly, her voice trembling despite her attempt at composure. "I was just—"

"Just what?" His gaze snapped to hers, sharp and unyielding. "Eavesdropping? Searching for something to use against me?"

Sarah's pulse quickened. "No, I—"

"Don't lie to me." His voice was low, almost a growl, and it sent a shiver down her spine.

"I'm not lying!" she shot back, surprising even herself with the sudden surge of defiance. "I wasn't eavesdropping. I just—heard things."

James took a step closer, his eyes narrowing. "Heard what, exactly?"

She hesitated, the weight of his stare pinning her in place. Could she tell him what she'd overheard? That someone had mentioned her name in connection with a deal she didn't understand? That the conversation had sounded more like a threat than a business arrangement?

"I heard...enough," she said finally, her voice quieter now. "Enough to know something's going on. Something about me."

James's expression darkened, and for a moment, she thought he might explode. But instead, he closed the distance between them in two swift strides, stopping so close she could feel the heat radiating off him.

"What did you hear?" he demanded.

"Why don't you tell me?" she countered, her chin lifting despite the fear churning in her stomach. "What is this about? Why was my name brought up?"

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he studied her, his eyes searching hers as if trying to determine how much she really knew. The silence stretched, thick and heavy, until she thought she might break under it.

Finally, he spoke. "You have no idea what you've gotten yourself into, do you?"

Her breath caught. "What does that mean?"

James exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. For the first time, he looked less like the controlled, confident CEO and more like a man carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

"It means," he said, his voice quieter now but no less intense, "you've stepped into something bigger than you realize. And if you're not careful, it will destroy you."

"Then tell me what it is!" she insisted, her frustration bubbling over. "Stop speaking in riddles and just tell me the truth!"

He shook his head, his jaw tightening again. "You wouldn't understand."

"Try me."

The challenge hung in the air between them, and for a moment, she thought he might actually take it. But then he turned away, walking to the window and staring out at the city lights.

"I can't," he said finally.

Sarah's hands balled into fists at her sides. "You can't, or you won't?"

He didn't answer, and the silence was louder than any words he could have spoken.

Frustrated and hurt, she turned to leave. But before she could reach the door, his voice stopped her.

"If you want to know the truth," he said, his tone colder now, "then stay. But know that once you hear it, there's no going back."

She froze, her hand on the door handle. Every instinct told her to walk away, to leave this man and his secrets behind. But something inside her—a dangerous, reckless part of her—kept her rooted in place.

Slowly, she turned back to him. "Fine," she said, her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her. "Tell me."

He looked at her then, really looked at her, and the weight of his gaze was almost unbearable.

"Tomorrow," he said, his voice firm. "Meet me at the vineyard. Alone."

And with that, he turned away again, leaving her standing there with more questions than answers.

As Sarah left the room, her mind raced. What truth was he hiding? And why did it feel like uncovering it might change everything?

She didn't know it yet, but the decision to meet him would set into motion events she couldn't escape.

And it would cost her more than she was prepared to lose.
