The Price Of Magic

Chapter 19: Chapter 19: A Council of Secrets

The corridors of the palace were quieter than usual as Aria made her way to Damien’s chambers. She clutched the journal tightly, her mind racing with everything she had learned. The ritual, the celestial alignment, the terrible risks involved—it all weighed heavily on her. But she had no time to waste. Damien needed to know, and they needed to act quickly.

When she reached the prince’s chambers, the guards stationed outside recognized her immediately and allowed her entry without question. As she stepped inside, she found Damien seated by the window, his back to the door. He was staring out into the courtyard, lost in thought. The tension in his posture was unmistakable, and Aria’s heart ached for him.

"Damien," she called softly, not wanting to startle him.

He turned to face her, his eyes dark and shadowed with worry. But when he saw her, a flicker of warmth returned to his gaze. "Aria, you’re here. I’ve been waiting for you."

She crossed the room to him, unable to hide the urgency in her movements. "I’ve found something important—something that could help us break the curse."

Damien’s expression shifted, a mix of hope and caution. "What is it?"

Aria hesitated for a moment, then handed him the journal. "This was hidden in the library. It talks about the crown and how it’s tied to the curse. There’s a ritual that could sever the connection, but…"

"But it’s dangerous," Damien finished, his voice heavy with understanding. He began to flip through the pages, his eyes scanning the text with increasing intensity. "The celestial alignment… I’ve heard of it. It’s said to be a time of great power, but also great peril."

Aria nodded, her hands clasped together to steady herself. "If we don’t try, the curse will only get stronger. But if the ritual fails…"

Damien closed the journal, his expression unreadable. "We lose everything."

The silence that followed was thick with unspoken fears. Aria could see the conflict in Damien’s eyes—the desire to be free of the curse, weighed against the dread of what could happen if they failed.

"We can’t do this alone," Damien finally said, his voice resolute. "If we’re to attempt this ritual, we need allies—people we can trust. The stakes are too high for us to risk failure."

Aria agreed, relief washing over her. "I’ve been thinking the same thing. But who can we trust? The palace is full of secrets, and there are those who would prefer to see the curse remain intact."

Damien stood, placing the journal on the table. "There are a few who have always been loyal to me, who have proven themselves time and again. We’ll need to bring them into our confidence."

Aria thought of Lady Evelyne, of her cryptic warnings and subtle guidance. "I believe Lady Evelyne could be one of those allies. She knows more than she lets on, and I think she genuinely wants to help us."

Damien nodded, considering her words. "Evelyne has always been shrewd, but she’s also been one of my most trusted advisors. We’ll need her wisdom."

"And Alaric," Aria added. "He’s been imprisoned for challenging the curse, but his knowledge could be invaluable. If we can free him…"

Damien’s jaw tightened. "It won’t be easy, but you’re right. We’ll need him. I’ll arrange for his release, quietly. We can’t afford to draw attention to what we’re doing."

Aria felt a surge of determination. They were beginning to form a plan, and with each step, the possibility of breaking the curse seemed more real. "Who else can we trust?"

Damien thought for a moment, then spoke with conviction. "There’s one other person I believe we can rely on—General Calder. He’s led Elysium’s armies for years, and he’s always been loyal to the crown. If we’re going to attempt this ritual, we’ll need someone with his strategic mind to help us prepare."

Aria knew of General Calder by reputation—he was a formidable figure, respected and feared in equal measure. If he was on their side, it would be a significant advantage.

"We should gather them," Aria suggested, her voice filled with resolve. "Bring them together so we can discuss our next steps. The sooner we act, the better."

Damien agreed. "I’ll send word to Evelyne and Calder. You’ll need to meet with Alaric and bring him to a secure location. We’ll convene tonight, in a place where we won’t be overheard."

Aria’s heart pounded with a mix of fear and anticipation. The council they were forming would be their best hope for success, but it would also mark the beginning of a dangerous path—one that could lead to either salvation or ruin.

As Damien prepared to send his messages, Aria made her way to the dungeons to meet with Alaric. She knew the risks they were taking, the enemies they might make along the way. But she also knew that they had no choice. The curse had to be broken, and this might be their only chance.

When she arrived at Alaric’s cell, she found him waiting, his eyes filled with a grim understanding. "You’ve come back," he said, his voice steady. "Does that mean you’ve found a way to break the curse?"

Aria nodded, her resolve hardening. "We’ve found a way, but it’s dangerous. We need your help, Alaric. Will you stand with us?"

Alaric’s gaze never wavered. "If it means putting an end to this curse once and for all, I will do whatever it takes."

With that, Aria led him out of the dungeons, her mind already on the council they would form that night. The shadows were closing in, but they were no longer alone. Together, they would face the darkness—and, with any luck, emerge victorious.

As night fell, Aria and Damien met with Evelyne, Alaric, and General Calder in a secluded chamber deep within the palace. The air was thick with tension as they laid out their plan, the gravity of their mission clear to all.

Each of them knew what was at stake, and each was willing to risk everything to save Damien and protect Elysium. The council was formed, and their path was set.

Now, all that remained was to see it through—to confront the curse head-on and bring light to the shadows that had plagued the kingdom for so long.

But as they departed the chamber, Aria couldn’t shake the feeling that there were still secrets left to uncover—secrets that could tip the balance between success and failure in ways they couldn’t yet foresee. The battle had begun, but the outcome was still far from certain.
