Chapter 20: Chapter 19
Excitement
After sharing a cup of ice cream with Preston—something I'd missed so much—I couldn't help but feel a warm satisfaction in my heart. It was the kind of joy only he could bring. I didn't take much of the ice cream, but it wasn't about the amount; it was about sharing it with him, just like old times.
On the drive back to the orphanage, Preston held my hand the entire way, gripping it tightly like I might disappear if he let go. I smiled, glancing at him every now and then as he stared out the window, a small, content smile playing on his lips.
When we arrived, I parked the car and got out, my heart beating slightly faster. I had a purpose tonight, one I hadn't shared with Preston. After walking him to his room and saying a brief goodbye, I headed to see Mother Charity.
She welcomed me warmly, as she always did. I'd made it a habit to send money every month since my company had started doing well, ensuring she and the kids had everything they needed.
"Caleb, it's so good to see you," she said, her kind eyes lighting up.
"It's good to see you too, Mother," I replied, sitting down. "How's everyone doing?"
We chatted for a while about the orphanage, the kids, and how things had been going. I asked if there was anything she needed, assuring her I'd be more than happy to help.
Then I cleared my throat, feeling a bit nervous. "Mother," I began, "you know Preston is turning 18 next week. I've made arrangements for him at my place. I plan to sponsor him through college and take care of him from now on."
Her face softened, and she gave me a knowing smile. "I always knew this day would come," she said. "You've always had a special bond with that boy. He's been waiting for you."
I nodded, my voice steady. "I've been worried about how he'll cope with the world. He's so innocent, but I trust he's been in good hands here. That's why I came to ask if he can come home with me tonight."
She tilted her head thoughtfully. "There's no problem with him going with you, Caleb. He's 18 already—or close enough—but does it have to be tonight? Can't it wait until tomorrow?"
"I could wait," I admitted, "but since I'm here already, I'd rather take him tonight. I've waited long enough."
Mother Charity smiled warmly, sensing the excitement I was trying to hide. "Very well," she said. "If Preston is ready, he can go with you tonight."
I thanked her and left her office, my heart racing with anticipation. I walked briskly to Preston's room, pushing the door open to find him lying on his bed, talking animatedly on the phone. I recognized that smile—it was the one he always wore when talking to Annabel.
When he noticed me, he quickly ended the call and sat up. "I thought you'd already left," he said, tilting his head curiously.
I shook my head, smiling at him. "I have good news," I said.
"What is it?" he asked eagerly.
"Pack your things," I said, grinning. "You're coming home with me tonight."
His eyes widened in shock, and for a moment, he just stared at me, frozen. "Are you serious right now?"
I nodded.
Suddenly, he sprang up and threw himself into my arms, his excitement bubbling over. Before I could react, he planted a quick peck on my cheek, then immediately pulled back, his face turning bright red as he realized what he'd done.
I laughed, unable to resist teasing him. "What was that for?"
He stammered, "I—I was just… I'm sorry, I didn't mean—"
"Relax," I said, ruffling his hair. "Your shy face is adorable."
He turned even redder but quickly busied himself packing his things. I told him not to worry about clothes or shoes since I'd already bought everything he'd need. Instead, he focused on gathering his personal belongings—our pictures, his drawings, and a few sentimental items.
Once he was ready, we went to say goodbye to Mother Charity and the other children. There were hugs, a few tears, and warm wishes as they saw him off.
As we walked back to the car, Preston turned to me with a radiant smile. "I can't believe this is happening."
I squeezed his hand. "Believe it, pretty boy. You're coming home."
