The protagonist who hates losers is so sweet to me.

Chapter 21 - Anger.

The sudden change came, and Shi Tao’s body stiffened and fell straight down. His body was charred, his clothes torn, his hair turned gray, and his entire body except for his white eyes was burnt black.
His body continued to convulse, and purple electric currents surged around him. The unfortunate children nearby were also affected, getting electrocuted and foaming at the mouth even worse than his convulsions.
People nearby retreated like avoiding a plague, afraid of being affected themselves, wondering how could Shi Tao, a level two esper, miss his target?
But only Shi Tao knew that it wasn’t a matter of missing his target. He clearly aimed at Song Xinqi’s head, but something seemed to have controlled his brain while activating his ability, making him uncontrollably strike himself.
He was a thunder-type esper with antibodies against lightning. Even if he didn’t hold back, he wouldn’t have electrocuted himself to death.
A pair of long legs appeared before his eyes. He struggled to open his eyes and saw Song Xinqi’s smirk, “You need such a long wind-up to activate your ability. I thought you were so powerful, but it turns out…you can’t even hit a person.
It seems there’s no one formidable here. A waste like you can become the leader of the base?”
His mocking skill activated, ridiculing everyone, leaving those around feeling embarrassed. Who let Song Xinqi speak the truth? Shi Tao was indeed the most formidable person in the base.
Shi Tao gritted his teeth, trying to stand up, but his limbs wouldn’t let him. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t stand up. He shouted at the people nearby, “What are you waiting for? Help me up!”
The people nearby, snapping out of their trance, quickly helped him up. Using sheer willpower, he wrestled back control of his brain from Song Xinqi. Song Xinqi felt the resistance, but Shi Tao managed to regain control almost exhaustedly.
Song Xinqi lifted his chin, waiting for him to speak. Shi Tao could only say, “I was blind. I don’t want him anymore.”
Song Xinqi’s ability wasn’t visible like others’, only those affected knew how formidable it was. People looked at each other, wondering why the leader suddenly complied to someone else.
“So, brother, are you here to take over the base?” He asked politely.
“No, I’m not interested in being the leader,” Song Xinqi replied.
Hearing Song Xinqi’s words, he breathed a sigh of relief and smiled, “It’s okay. I can make an exception and let you and your wife stay, but we can’t afford to support idlers. If you insist on bringing him, you’ll have to do more work.”
Song Xinqi had no objections, but he didn’t like his tone, “Keep your mouth clean. I have nothing to do with him.”
Seeing his expression of disdain, Shi Tao changed his tone, “Alright, my friend.”
Shi Tao dispersed the onlookers and assigned someone to take the two newcomers to tour the base.
The person leading them explained as they walked, “All our resources in the base are communal. Everyone must complete tasks before receiving food and supplies.
Unfortunately, you’ve arrived at a bad time; most of the food has been distributed. The leader said we won’t take your own supplies, but starting tomorrow, you’ll have to complete tasks for the base. Usually, it’s finding resources or clearing zombies. The more you do, the more resources you’ll receive.”
The person continued enthusiastically, while Yu Qing asked Song Xinqi quietly, “What does ‘mazi’mean?”
Song Xinqi walked ahead without looking sideways, “You don’t need to know.”
Yu Qing said, “Does it mean a male concubine?”
“Who told you?”
“I guessed. Isn’t that right?”
Song Xinqi frowned, “Don’t make too much of yourself. I’ll get rid of you sooner or later.”
Has he been too good to him lately, creating an illusion of a good relationship between them?
Song Xinqi said, “No, it’s two separate houses.”
“What did you say?”
“I said arrange two houses for us, both single occupancy.”
The person was taken aback, feeling that he was really insatiable. “This, the leader hasn’t told me about it. I can’t decide on my own.”
Song Xinqi’s expression was impatient, “Anyway, I must be separated from him.”
He glanced sideways at Yu Qing, hoping to make him understand that he was nothing special in his eyes. However, he found that he didn’t care about what they were saying at all, focusing only on the little snow leopard hiding in his arms.
“That’s okay. I’ll arrange one for you. Let this young man stay with others.”
Observing Song Xinqi’s expression as if he wanted to eat Yu Qing, the person wondered why they brought such a troublemaker along if their relationship wasn’t good.
He sneaked a glance at him; he was really good-looking, with rosy lips and white teeth, golden eyes sparkling and lively, impeccable beauty that could instantly ignite others’ protective instincts.
He didn’t know how Song Xinqi felt, but with such a look, he could easily save his life even at such times.
Song Xinqi replied, “No, we need two separate rooms.”
He didn’t want Yu Qing to stay with someone else. What if he got bullied? He’d have to step in then. Huh, Yu Qing was really a troublesome fellow.
The person had to lead the two to a small bungalow. “This is the last vacant room, untouched by anyone. As for the other one, I need to talk to the boss first. If he agrees, I’ll inform you.”
Song Xinqi nodded silently.
When the person left, Yu Qing took the small snow leopard out from his clothes and held it up. “Have you been feeling suffocated, Little Snow?”
The snow leopard wrapped its tail around his wrist and let out a soft meow..
He placed the snow leopard on the bed. The little snow leopard was now palm-sized. Using his ability, he returned it to its original size, showing off to Song Xinqi. “You see, I’ve mastered how to use my ability.”
Song Xinqi looked at him coldly. Yu Qing tilted his head. “Are you unhappy, Song Xinqi?”
“No.” Song Xinqi lowered his voice, and their eyes met.
After a while, there was a knock on the door. Song Xinqi got up to answer it.
“The boss has arranged another room for you.” The person pointed to a location. “It’s over there, turn the corner and walk a few steps.”
He nodded.
When the person left, Yu Qing took the opportunity to ask, “Excuse me, is there hot water in the base?”
“We have water and fire elemental abilities users.”
“Could you please help me get some hot water?”
The person, following Shi Tao’s instructions to treat these two well, said, “Sure, wait a moment.”
That person left again. Yu Qing noticed Song Xinqi hesitating at the doorway, not coming in, and belatedly realized, “Hey, aren’t we living together?”
“No.” He responded coldly, glancing at him out of the corner of his eye.
Yu Qing nodded. “Oh, alright then. Bye.”
He still felt that Song Xinqi seemed to be in a bad mood and opened his mouth to say something, but suddenly heard a “thud” behind him. Turning around, he saw Yu Xiaoxue had fallen headfirst onto the floor.
“Yu Xiaoxue, how did you fall off the bed!” He was anxious, immediately forgetting what he wanted to say and promptly shut the door.
Song Xinqi, who was waiting for him to ask him to stay, became angry.
Yu Qing had no idea about the storm raging in Song Xinqi’s heart outside. He hurriedly picked up the little snow leopard who was lying on the floor and patted it before putting it back on the bed.
“You can’t just get off the bed like that. What if you get hurt?” He tapped the little snow leopard’s head.
Yu Xiaoxue mewed and nestled its round head into his palm, acting coquettishly. It was growing fast, and in just two days, Yu Xiaoxue had grown noticeably bigger.
He could no longer hold it with just one hand. After snuggling in his arms for a while, the little snow leopard went to the bag containing the milk powder, human-like, and stuck its head in to look for the bottle.
“Are you hungry? But you’ll have to wait a bit longer. There’s no hot water right now.” Yu Qing picked it out of the bag.
Afterward, the hot water was delivered. Yu Qing opened the door just a crack to thank them and took the hot water inside. The snow leopard eagerly awaited its milk on the bed.
He poured some milk into a bottle and fed it to it, who eagerly lapped it up.
With the bottle empty, the satisfied snow leopard yawned and curled up to sleep on the bed. He picked it up and put it down gently.
There was a knock on the door again, and Yu Qing, who was barely awake, opened it. “Who’s there?”
Song Xinqi stood at the door, looking at him with disheveled hair and messy clothes. He wrinkled his brows at the sight of him, who had just woken up. “Do you know what time it is?”
“What time?” His yawn made his words unclear.
“It’s already noon. If you wake up any later, there won’t be any lunch left.”
He suddenly woke up. “Then what are we waiting for, let’s go!”
As they headed to eat, Yu Qing felt something was off in the atmosphere. People seemed tense and hurried, with worried expressions. He asked, “What’s going on?”
“In the morning, many people were killed by mutated plants while searching for resources outside. They didn’t find any supplies and even lost quite a few people,” Song Xinqi explained.
“You guys have missions to do in the morning.”
“Otherwise, what else? Should everyone sleep in until afternoon like you?”
They arrived at a building designated for food distribution. They weren’t early, and there was already a long line. Most of the base’s residents were gathered here.
Yu Qing learned from others about the events that had happened in the morning. A group of people went hunting several tens of kilometers away and encountered a man-eating plant on the way, resulting in half of them being injured. It was Song Xinqi who finally killed the plant; otherwise, others wouldn’t have survived.
When it was their turn, Song Xinqi got a large piece of meat, and Yu Qing got a similar-sized piece.
Without any seasonings, the smell of cooked meat alone was tantalizing. Yu Qing found a spot to squat and eat. As he chewed, he noticed an argument breaking out in the queue. He swallowed the meat and looked over.
“Why do I only get so little? I ran fifty kilometers this morning and risked my life to bring back a box of water,” the person in front of the line argued with the food distributor, holding up a small piece of meat.
The food distributor calmly replied, “Yesterday, we didn’t get enough food, and there are no new supplies today. We can only distribute based on contributions. You brought back a box of water, so this is what you get. Many people didn’t get anything to eat.”
The person grew angrier. He had arrived late yesterday and didn’t get any food, so he had been hungry all night. He had decided to take more risks this morning to get more, but all he got was a small piece of meat.
His bloodshot eyes scanned the surroundings and finally settled on Yu Qing, who was squatting on the sidewalk. He pointed at him. “What about him? I didn’t see him go out this morning. Why does he get so much food?”
