The protagonist who hates losers is so sweet to me.

Chapter 34 - Freezing point

With his upgraded mental powers, Song Xinqi extended his ability to cover a radius of a hundred miles. It didn’t take him long to locate the group of zombies he was searching for. Fortunately, they hadn’t strayed too far; they would likely catch up in a few days.

Returning to the campfire, he found Yu Qing feeding the last piece of rabbit meat to Yu Xiaoxue. He approached and said, “It’s time to go.”

Yu Qing nodded, discarded the bones, and shrunk Yu Xiaoxue, worried about accidentally crushing her injured leg if placed in his pocket, so he held her instead. “Let’s go!”

During their journey, Yu Qing didn’t encounter any live zombies. The sight of zombies lying dead with blood oozing from their orifices made him realize how terrifying level-three powers could be, capable of killing zombies invisibly.

Freed from his mental turmoil, Song Xinqi was like an unsealed demon king, capable of dominating the post-apocalyptic world. Yu Qing wondered how long he could rely on this powerful ally.

While Song Xinqi used his mental net to search for nearby zombies and eliminate them, Yu Qing called out to him.

“What is it?” Song Xinqi asked, raising an eyebrow.

Yu Qing fidgeted nervously. “What do you think of me?”

“What are you getting at?” Song Xinqi’s voice was suspicious.

“Well, we were forced to be together because of the mental link. I know I did some things wrong to make you take me along.” Yu Qing confessed.

Song Xinqi chuckled. “Now you realize your mistakes? You did everything you could back then.”

Indeed, Yu Qing had even called him “dad” for a while. He glanced at Song Xinqi’s face, hoping he wouldn’t hold a grudge.

Seeing his guilty look, Song Xinqi felt a sense of satisfaction. However, he maintained his stern expression. “So, what are you trying to say?”

“I want to know if your impression of me has changed after all this time together. Even just a little?” Yu Qing asked hopefully.

Song Xinqi’s gaze turned meaningful. What was this little fool thinking?

“So, has it?” Yu Qing pressed.

Song Xinqi turned away coldly. “No.”

Yu Qing watched as Song Xinqi quickened his pace, feeling confused.

Based on his limited understanding of him from the original novel, Yu Qing guessed that the man was stubborn and never spoke honestly. He decided that Song Xinqi’s “no” might actually mean a slight improvement in his opinion.

Nodding at his own deduction, he felt hopeful about a peaceful separation from him once Yu Xiaoxue’s leg healed.

Recently, he noticed Song Xinqi behaving oddly. He handed him a skewer of meat he’d cooked himself. “I made this for you.”

Song Xinqi stared at the half-raw, half-burnt meat, deep in thought.

“Hurry, take it. My arm is getting sore.” Yu Qing urged.

Seeing Yu Qing’s expectant eyes, Song Xinqi reluctantly took the skewer.

“Taste it,” Yu Qing said eagerly as he took a bite, chewing expressionlessly. “How is it?”

Song Xinqi couldn’t decide whether to swallow or spit it out. The taste was oddly familiar. “Don’t cook again.”

Yu Qing was disappointed. “Oh…”

In an attempt to please Song Xinqi, Yu Qing had tried to mimic his cooking method, but it was a failure.

In the end, Song Xinqi finished the skewer and demonstrated how to properly cook meat, all while thoroughly criticizing Yu Qing. As Yu Qing ate, he endured Song Xinqi’s disdain.

He became unusually enthusiastic about digging up crystal cores, handing them over to Song Xinqi with a proud look, hoping for praise.

At night, free from surrounding zombies, he insisted on chatting with Song Xinqi about various topics, trying to salvage their relationship. Initially suspicious, Song Xinqi soon realized that his actions were attempts to please him.

He typically hated people trying to curry favor, but for some reason, Yu Qing’s efforts weren’t annoying. Instead, he started to look forward to what silly, endearing things he might do next.

Curious about the change, he secretly opened their mental link, only to hear Yu Qing thinking about separating from him once Yu Xiaoxue was healed.

Stopping abruptly, he confronted him. “Do you want to get rid of me?”

Yu Qing, alarmed, played dumb. “What? No, why do you ask?”

**You know why I know your thoughts.**

Yu Qing realized Song Xinqi had read his mind, and panic set in. “No, let me explain. I was just afraid of bothering you, so I thought separating would be best for both of us.”

Song Xinqi’s expression darkened. “Too late.”

Seeing his rage, Yu Qing was terrified. Song Xinqi declared, “I decide when we sever our link.”

As he walked away, Yu Qing whispered to Yu Xiaoxue, “I’m doomed.”

Their relationship hit rock bottom, with Yu Qing trying to keep his distance. A week later, sensing fewer zombies approaching the safety zone, the guards were puzzled. Something was eliminating the zombies mysteriously.

A few days later, Song Xinqi and Yu Qing arrived at the safety zone. The gate guard asked about their abilities, and Song Xinqi demanded to see the leader.

The guard tried to use his power but collapsed in pain as Song Xinqi’s mental attack overwhelmed him.

Half an hour later, Song Xinqi had taken over the safety zone, his terrifying power leaving everyone in awe.

“Here’s all our information,” the former leader’s deputy said, handing over documents.

As Song Xinqi reviewed the materials, he realized the safety zone’s priorities were basic survival and resource management. However, he aimed for sustainable development and a permanent safe haven.

He ordered a re-registration of all residents, categorizing abilities into life, combat, and support types.

Yu Qing filled out his form, listing his ability to shrink objects and choosing support. Seeing this, Song Xinqi scoffed.

The deputy, noting Yu Qing’s underwhelming power, was surprised when Song Xinqi ordered him to be given special treatment.

Yu Qing moved into a house far from Song Xinqi, enjoying his freedom and the friendly neighborhood.

One day, while helping a neighbor, he spotted someone familiar among new arrivals. “Peng Shu?”
