The protagonist who hates losers is so sweet to me.

Chapter 7 - Survivors.

Song Xinqi kicked the zombie away, green liquid splattering as he drew a bloodstained machete and ran forward.
The zombies that had climbed down from the slope were close behind. Fortunately, the zombies’ bodies were very uncoordinated, so even though he was carrying so many things, they couldn’t easily catch up.
Song Xinqi maneuvered nimbly through the forest, shaking off many zombies, but two continued to follow closely.
Yu Qing, looking at the hideously grimacing zombies behind them, reminded, “They’re getting closer.”
Song Xinqi suddenly braked and swung the machete backward. A zombie, caught off guard, slammed into the sharp blade, its entire face splitting in half and pinning it to the ground, where it continued to writhe.
Something was wrong. The vitality of this zombie was unusually strong. He felt a sinking feeling.
The zombies they had shaken off earlier, and the ones they encountered before, were actually very fragile. If they sustained a human-equivalent fatal injury, they would die.
But this zombie was different. Its defense and vitality were much stronger than all the previous zombies.
Yu Qing shouted, “To the right, to the right!”
He leaned to the side, dodging the attack of another zombie, and raised the machete to smash it down onto the zombie’s head with force.
The immense impact caused it to fall to the ground, splattering the surrounding tree trunks with a circle of foul-smelling green liquid.
It lay on the ground, roaring at Song Xinqi, who dismounted Yu Qing and repeatedly hacked at the zombie’s head with the machete until it made no sound.
Yu Qing, who had kept a distance, pointed at the zombie with the machete embedded in its face when Song Xinqi approached, saying, “It’s still moving.”
Song Xinqi had a little green goo on his face, frowning as he reached out to the zombie and mimicked twisting its neck. The zombie stiffly grabbed its own neck and snapped it.
“This is the power of Tier 2 abilities, much more effective than before,” Song Xinqi thought as he pulled the machete from the zombie’s body, finding it more convenient to use abilities than regular weapons.
However, his abilities were still unstable, so he opted to use conventional weapons for now.
The ground was covered in green slime and zombie limbs, a scene that made one uneasy. Yu Qing stood nearby, a mix of fear and curiosity in his gaze.
Song Xinqi was surprised that he didn’t scream at the sight, considering how he used to make loud noises back in Tian Luo Town. But things seemed different since Yu Qing started hanging around him.
Not caring to delve into it, he saw Yu Qing as nothing more than a nuisance, albeit a slightly less annoying one.
The machete was coated in green goo, emitting an indescribable smell. Yu Qing subtly backed away, only to be caught by Song Xinqi.
Seeing Song Xinqi smile at him, he had a bad feeling and sure enough, he said, “You take this machete.”
Yu Qing, clutching his helmet, murmured, “I’m still small.”
Being just over a meter tall, the machete was like a giant object to him, not to mention the smell.
“Yu Qing, come here.”
Song Xinqi’s tone was slow and deliberate, but Yu Qing felt that if he didn’t obey, he might not live to see tonight’s moon. Reluctantly, he walked over and extended his short, small hand to him.
Thus, the forest presented this scene: a young man, 1.9 meters tall, walked unhurriedly ahead with a hiking pack on his back, followed by a little kid who was dragging a machete and panting heavily, wearing an adult-style helmet that made him look like a bobblehead doll.
Midway, Yu Qing suddenly hissed, bent over with difficulty, and lifted his pant leg to check. His leg was smooth and flawless without any wounds. He lowered his pant leg and asked Song Xinqi ahead of him, “Are you hurt on your leg?”
Only now did Song Xinqi notice a cut on his left calf. The cut was smooth, likely caused by the machete he had been using earlier.
He hadn’t felt it while he was chopping zombies, but now that Yu Qing mentioned it, the pain began to set in.
Blood seeped through his pants, gradually soaking the fabric. Yu Qing’s face turned pale from the pain. “Do you have any alcohol? Quickly treat it, it hurts so much.”
“Such a wimp.” Since it didn’t affect his ability to walk, Song Xinqi was more worried about the zombies that might still be chasing them and wanted to leave the area quickly.
“No, we need to take care of it. You’re bleeding,” Yu Qing said with unusual seriousness, dragging the machete as he walked forward to inspect his wound.
Because of his osteogenesis imperfecta, he believed any wound needed to be properly treated immediately. If the wound worsened, what seemed like a minor injury could become life-threatening.
But before he could get close, Song Xinqi pushed him away. Not wanting to waste time dealing with this meddlesome little weakling, Song Xinqi took long strides forward, leaving him grimacing in pain.
“Song Xinqi, be careful!”
They couldn’t retrieve the motorcycle from up there, so they had to keep walking down the slope. After a while, they came across a bridge with a stream flowing underneath it.
“Song Xinqi, there’s water here,” Yu Qing seized the opportunity. “Hurry up and treat your wound.”
Getting a bit annoyed by his constant nagging, he went to the stream, filled their empty water bottles, then sat down and rolled up his pant leg.
His flesh and the pants had stuck together. When he pulled up his pants, Yu Qing shivered at the sight.
Taking out disinfectant and bandages from his backpack, he poured some on his leg. Yu Qing jumped in pain, quickly grabbing Song Xinqi’s hand. “Stop, stop, it hurts too much!”
He looked displeased. “Don’t get in the way.”
Yu Qing took the alcohol and bandages. “Let me do it.”
“Do you know how?” He eyed the little weakling with suspicion.
Although Yu Qing had zero life skills, he was very adept at treating wounds. Patting his chest, he assured, “You can trust me with this.”
He carefully used alcohol-soaked gauze to clean the blood and dirt from Song Xinqi’s leg, his movements extremely cautious and meticulous. As he worked, he grimaced as if he were the one injured.
Song Xinqi coldly watched his expressive face, his eyes mocking.
However, he had to admit that he was quite skilled at treating wounds. It didn’t hurt much, the cleaning was thorough, and the bandage was wrapped beautifully, without hindering movement.
On the lush grass, a finger-length vine seemed to have a life of its own, crawling behind the two. When it was about a meter away, the vine suddenly stiffened and then twisted uncontrollably, tightening around itself until it squeezed out green juice and broke in half.
Realizing these people were not easy to deal with, the broken vine reluctantly retreated until it disappeared.
Suddenly, Song Xinqi said, “Be careful, there might be a lot of danger around here.”
Yu Qing looked around but didn’t see any danger. Instead, he noticed some waist-high weeds swaying in the distance. He pointed at the weeds and turned to him, “Song Xinqi, look…”
Before he could finish, Song Xinqi dragged him to the bottom of a cave. Using the cave for cover, they hid their presence. After a while, a man walked on the other side of the stream.
This was a bearded middle-aged man, burly with sharp eyes. He looked around and called back, “There’s a water source here.”
Three more people came over, two women and a man. One of the women was very young, dressed in a nurse’s uniform. The other was a middle-aged woman who didn’t look well, and the young man was of medium build, quite handsome.
As they were about to approach, Yu Qing couldn’t help but hold his breath.
Encountering other humans on the road could be either good or bad.
They had a lot of supplies, but if they came across people who had been starving for a long time, it might lead to a deadly fight among humans.
However, with Song Xinqi behind him, he felt reassured.
He watched as the group came closer, eventually stopping by the bridge. The middle-aged woman leaned forward, cupping water in her hands to drink. A little further and she would be able to see him.
“Finally found water. I was dying of thirst,” the young man complained.
“Chen Yi, go back to the car and see if there’s anything we can use to store water. Bring everything we can find so we can take the water back,” the bearded man ordered.
The young man nodded, wiped his mouth, and walked back.
Yu Qing felt an urge to peek outside. He remembered the name Chen Yi. In the original story, he was similar to the original protagonist, always trying to align with powerful people.
While he had aligned with Song Xinqi, Chen Yi had latched onto someone else. When Chen Yi saw Song Xinqi, he constantly tried to win him over, leading to a fierce rivalry between Chen Yi and the original protagonist.
However, unlike Yu Qing, who had a mental link with Song Xinqi that ensured his survival despite Song Xinqi’s disdain, Chen Yi was not so fortunate.
After angering Song Xinqi, he was fed to zombies, dying even earlier than Yu Qing.
The bearded man said, “There are usually other things near water sources. We shouldn’t stay too long; just rest briefly and then leave.”
The nurse nodded in agreement.
The bearded man seemed to notice something, staring at a spot on the opposite bank. Following his gaze, Yu Qing saw a stone with bloodstains that hadn’t been cleaned off.
“Someone was just here,” the bearded man said.
As soon as he finished speaking, Yu Qing felt Song Xinqi’s muscles tense behind him. He looked up and saw him leaning nonchalantly against the cave wall, his eyes downcast.
However, his hand was tightly gripping the machete, ready to launch into a killing spree at the first sign of trouble.
Suddenly, Yu Qing sensed something was off. His eyes widened, but he couldn’t control it—his body abruptly returned to its normal form.
With a splash, his leg hit the water, sending droplets flying.
“Who’s there!” the bearded man shouted.
He turned his head and saw Song Xinqi’s murderous face. “I didn’t do it on purpose,” he stammered.
