The protagonist who hates losers is so sweet to me.

Chapter 9 - Zombie tide.

“It’s not what you think.” Yu Qing repeatedly denied, anxiously glancing at Song Xinqi. His impression in Song Xinqi’s mind was already poor, and he couldn’t afford further misunderstandings.
After speaking, Song Xinqi no longer looked at him, clearly not wanting to get involved. He had no choice but to sit back.
Tu Xiao, who had been a bit scared of Song Xinqi from the beginning, noticed that he seemed to be in a bad mood since they got in the car.
He frowned frequently, occasionally pressing his temples, looking fierce and unapproachable, making her afraid to start a conversation.
After leaving the woods, they drove onto a small road. Zombies were attracted by the sound of the car from time to time and were ruthlessly crushed under the wheels. The car shook as it ran over the zombies’ bodies, and their sudden roars were creepy, putting everyone on edge. Hardly anyone spoke.
The car exited the small road and was about to reach a wider road when several zombies suddenly jumped out in front, screeching and throwing themselves at the truck, leaving a smear of green goo on the windshield.
They appeared abruptly. Wu Zhenhu cursed and quickly adjusted the steering wheel. The truck swerved violently, causing everyone inside to lurch forward with the inertia.
Tu Xiao, still terrified, looked outside and saw a few zombies crawling out from under the truck, their heads or bodies crushed, leaving green and white goo everywhere.
“These zombies are like squashed green caterpillars,” came a vivid analogy from Yu Qing.
Tu Xiao immediately imagined caterpillars bursting under her foot, covering her mouth and looking pale. “Stop talking, I’m going to throw up.”
The others couldn’t help feeling nauseous too. But after that, the tension everyone felt seemed to lessen a bit, and even the sight of the zombies outside didn’t seem as scary.
Suddenly, Chen Yi said, “I sense a lot of zombies ahead.”
Wu Zhenhu asked, “How many?”
Chen Yi replied, “I don’t know, but a lot.” His tone was grave.
Yu Qing anxiously asked, “What should we do? Should we take a detour?”
Wu Zhenhu replied, “Besides this road, we could take the highway and detour through the city, but the city has a high population, and we’ve been out of touch with it for a while. It might be completely overrun with zombies, maybe even more than here.”
Everyone fell silent after that.
Song Xinqi rested his hands on the railing. “Let’s push through. There’s no other option.”
Wu Zhenhu agreed, “We have no choice.”
The car roared as it drove forward. Yu Qing leaned against the truck bed, seeing Tu Xiao gripping the railing tightly, eyes fixed on the outside.
This part wasn’t in the original novel, and Chen Yi only appeared later when they reached the safe zone. The journey was glossed over in the novel, so he didn’t know what would happen next.
But with Song Xinqi there, nothing should go wrong. He was reassured and comforted Tu Xiao, “Don’t worry, Song Xinqi is very strong. When the zombie outbreak suddenly happened in the small city, he dragged me out with ease.
And we have Uncle Wu here too. Can the zombies really be tougher than them?”
Tu Xiao looked hesitant. She hadn’t seen how Song Xinqi dealt with zombies, and although Uncle Wu had powers, he couldn’t use them for long and wasn’t very explosive. Fewer zombies were manageable, but if there were too many, running was the only option.
Yu Qing appeared very confident. She looked at Song Xinqi in the distance. He was staring ahead, fingers tapping leisurely on the railing, expressionless, indeed looking like a hidden expert.
Yu Qing thought his voice was low, but Song Xinqi had heard every word. He listened quietly as he praised him in front of others, feeling a bit odd. He didn’t realize he was so impressive.
They drove another ten kilometers, and Chen Yi’s sensing grew stronger, his face paling. Others sensed the tension too.
The reason was clear: more and more vehicles were parked on the road. Further ahead, the highway was completely jammed, an impenetrable blockade of cars.
The highway remained eerily silent, with only empty cars, as if people had vanished into thin air.
“Hold on tight,” Wu Zhenhu called to those in the back, flooring the gas pedal. The truck roared like a beast, crashing into the rows of cars ahead. Yu Qing felt a massive impact, gripping the railing tightly to stay steady.
The front vehicles twisted from the collision, shoved aside, followed by the second and third cars. Screeching metal echoed as cars crunched together, some flipping over, carving a path through the mess.
The noise attracted zombies. Their howls came from all directions, swarming like insects from the ground, a tide surging towards them.
“This is too many!” Tu Xiao crouched, clutching the railing, unable to stand due to the severe jolts. Yu Qing saw a zombie using its companions to climb over the railing, its saliva-covered mouth aiming for Tu Xiao’s hand.
Yu Qing: “Watch out!”
Tu Xiao turned, seeing the zombie’s gaping mouth. She screamed, quickly retracting her hand, grabbing Yu Qing’s machete nearby, and flinging it at the zombie’s face.
With a “thud,” the machete embedded in the zombie’s face, causing it to topple over with the blade still in its head.
Yu Qing was silent for a moment, looking towards Song Xinqi, who was watching him too. His gaze shifted between Yu Qing and the fallen machete, then he smiled a menacing smile.
Was this going to be blamed on him too?!
The truck pressed forward determinedly, knocking aside any blocking cars. Zombies swarmed them, some getting caught in the truck, others climbing onto the railing using cars or other zombies.
Yu Qing moved further from the railing. Countless hands reached for him, but with nothing to hold onto, they couldn’t maintain balance on the shaking truck.
The truck hit a large SUV, jolting violently. He lost his footing, lurching towards the railing, eyes reflecting the approaching greyish-blue hands.
Just before he touched the zombies, he was yanked back and landed hard on the floor, looking up in shock.
Song Xinqi, looking impatient, let go of his shirt and put a helmet on his head. “Stay put.”
“If you cause more trouble, I’ll throw you into the zombie horde.”
Tu Xiao widened her eyes at this, but Yu Qing just nodded and adjusted his helmet. He saw Song Xinqi wielding the last machete, lifting it with both hands and slicing down with force, severing a row of zombie hands that fell into the truck bed.
Aunt An covered her mouth and retched at the sight of the green-bloodied severed hands. Tu Xiao was too shocked to speak, only trembling.
The truck jolted again. Yu Qing steadied himself and looked ahead. A pile of cars blocked the way, some stacked against the windshield, collapsing to the sides.
As they pushed deeper, the truck’s speed inevitably slowed, and the front became more dented. Wu Zhenhu gritted his teeth and floored the gas pedal, sending the truck lurching forward and knocking the zombies clinging to the glass away.
For every row of zombie hands Song Xinqi cut, new ones took their place. The severed hands piled up, and the stench filled the air.
He looked at another row of zombies. Suddenly, the zombies voluntarily released their grip on the railing, attacking their companions and tumbling off. A strange scene unfolded: any zombie that touched the railing was controlled by a mysterious force and thrown off, while the rest were chopped down by his machete.
Aunt An sat in the truck bed, her face a mix of fear and amazement, resulting in a strange, dazed look. She glanced at Song Xinqi, who stood steadily in front of the zombies, his face spattered with blood.
His cold, shadowed eyes showed no hesitation as he chopped zombies in half, looking more terrifying than the zombies themselves.
Aunt An shivered involuntarily, not daring to make a sound.
Chen Yi, watching through the rearview mirror, was astonished. His view of Song Xinqi changed, a new regard for him forming.
Song Xinqi’s decisive killing left a strong impression on everyone. Those who had been somewhat afraid of him now dared not look at him, yet they also felt a strong sense of security.
The truck, now covered by zombies, was cut off from the outside world. From a distance, it looked like a moving zombie horde. Their deafening roars shook the railing, which seemed ready to come off at any moment.
Yu Qing sat in the middle of the truck bed, staring at the zombies blocked by the railing. His nervousness slowly calmed amidst the continuous stress.
Hugging his knees, he let his thoughts wander. This scene was grander than any movie, he mused. Then he suddenly said, “This is so thrilling.”
Tu Xiao, beside him, couldn’t believe it. “Is this the time to talk about thrill? We might not even make it out alive!”
“Well, that’s true,” he said calmly. “But if we’re doomed to die here, being scared won’t help. If we survive, then there’s nothing to fear now, since we’ll eventually get out.”
She retorted, “Can you stop being scared by just saying that?”
But after speaking, she felt a gentle, powerful force easing her anxiety. She paused, and the grating sound of the railing and the zombies’ roars seemed less frightening.
She turned to him, “What did you do?”
He looked confused. “I didn’t do anything.”
She didn’t believe him. She knew her own temperament and couldn’t understand how just hearing his words calmed her. But inexplicably, she wasn’t as scared. All negative emotions seemed distant, as if behind a barrier.
However, when he stopped talking, her suppressed fear resurfaced. Her heart pounded as she instinctively sought out Yu Qing.
Yu Qing couldn’t understand why she didn’t seek help from the clearly capable Song Xinqi, instead turning to him, a self-proclaimed useless person.
He hesitated and then suggested, “If you’re really scared, why not take a nap? By the time you wake up, we might have escaped.”
He added cautiously, “Of course, we might turn into zombies while you’re sleeping, but that wouldn’t hurt. You wouldn’t feel it.”
Surprisingly, she agreed, “Then I’ll sleep first?”
He nodded and yawned, “I’m feeling a bit sleepy too.”
Song Xinqi, chopping zombies in front, turned to see the two already preparing to sleep.
Incredible, as expected of them.
