Chapter 61: 61: It’s easier to attack someone you know
Fenrir, shunned by the gods, was confined to a desolate forest far from where the deities resided. The area was surrounded by powerful divine barriers, which Tyr dismantled as he led Kevin, Slude, and Neil through.
As the group walked in, Kevin heard Tyr mutter under his breath, "Hmph, what foolish self-consolation. If Fenrir truly wanted to escape, these barriers wouldn't hold him."
After a ten-minute walk through dense, silent woods, they reached an open clearing where Fenrir lay resting. The sight of the massive wolf was both awe-inspiring and terrifying.
Fenrir's body was enormous, his silver fur gleaming like molten metal under the sunlight. Just one of his paws was large enough to hold Kevin entirely. His sharp claws glinted menacingly, and his fangs seemed capable of tearing through anything. Despite his intimidating appearance, there was an undeniable majesty about him.
As the trio approached, Fenrir opened his scarlet eyes. His gaze swept over Tyr, who smiled as he stepped forward, before moving to Kevin, Slude, and the trembling Neil perched on Kevin's shoulder.
Slude instinctively stepped closer to Kevin, her Valkyrie instincts kicking in to shield him.
"Fenrir, hello." Kevin smiled at Slude, took two steps forward, and boldly placed himself in Fenrir's line of sight. His voice was bright and calm as he greeted, "It's a pleasure to meet you. My name is Kevin, a warrior from the Kingdom of Ulster on the continent of Erin!"
Fenrir tilted his head slightly, studying the young man before him. The towering wolf's piercing eyes locked on Kevin, his voice deep and resonant, making it hard to tell whether it belonged to a male or female. "A human?"
"Yes, he is human," Tyr interjected. "From another divine realm, adopted by the next God-King. He's unique—he has no destiny."
"No destiny?" Fenrir's head lowered slightly, his immense body shifting as he scrutinized Kevin.
"Even my father, Odin, cannot see his fate," Tyr added, stepping forward.
At this, Fenrir rose, his colossal form casting a vast shadow over the trio. The ground trembled as he stood, his sheer size creating a sense of crushing oppression.
Slude moved to shield Kevin again, her expression tense, while Neil trembled visibly on his shoulder.
Kevin, however, simply stared up in awe. After a moment, his lips curved into an innocent grin as he muttered, "Wow, so cool…"
"...Huh?"
The air grew still as Fenrir, Tyr, Slude, and Neil turned to Kevin in disbelief.
Realizing his slip, Kevin blinked and quickly corrected himself, "I mean... beautiful?"
There was a long pause before Fenrir's lips curled upward slightly. His fangs glinted, making it unclear whether he was smiling or baring his teeth. He settled back down, his deep voice tinged with amusement. "You're not afraid of me? Do you even know who I am?"
"Of course," Kevin replied without hesitation. "You're Fenrir, the Earth-Shaking Demon Wolf. My father told me about you a year ago."
"Oh?" Fenrir leaned forward, intrigued. "And what did he say?"
"He said you're a terrifyingly powerful creature with unparalleled destructive capabilities!"
Fenrir tilted his head higher, looking proud.
"And," Kevin continued, smiling brightly, "that if I drank your blood, I'd become stronger."
Fenrir froze mid-nod.
Bang!
Neil and Slude moved simultaneously, Neil smacking Kevin's face with her wing while Slude clamped a hand over his mouth. Tyr, pale with panic, stepped in front of Kevin as if to shield him from Fenrir's wrath.
"You want to..." Fenrir's tone was unreadable as his piercing eyes bore into Kevin. "Make me bleed?"
Neil and Slude increased their efforts to keep Kevin quiet, practically gagging him in their panic.
"Let him go," Fenrir said after a moment, his tone calm yet firm.
"Fenrir..." Tyr began cautiously, but Fenrir cut him off. "Relax. I won't harm him... yet."
Tyr hesitated but signaled for Neil and Slude to release Kevin.
"You want my blood?" Fenrir asked, his tone still neutral.
"Yes," Kevin said plainly, brushing himself off. "Odin has already approved it."
Fenrir blinked, tilting his head in confusion. "Why tell me this?"
Kevin shrugged. "Because I realized you didn't know. Odin said I'd need to complete three tests to earn your blood. But it was clear no one informed you of this arrangement."
"Just because I didn't know, you decided to tell me?"
"Not exactly. I mentioned it in passing." Kevin smiled sheepishly. "My main goal was to get on good terms with you."
Fenrir's eyes narrowed, his fangs flashing. "You want my blood... and you think we should be friends?"
"Why not?" Kevin's tone was earnest.
"...Aren't you afraid I'll eat you?"
Kevin pointed at Tyr with a grin. "I brought Lord Tyr with me. Besides, I'm so skinny I'd barely fill your teeth. I don't look appetizing, do I?"
Fenrir scrutinized him before reluctantly nodding. "No, you don't look tasty at all."
Slude and Tyr exchanged bewildered glances. Neil, meanwhile, sighed in exasperation, muttering, "Classic Kevin."
After a moment, Fenrir spoke again. "Odin won't make earning my blood easy. His tests will be grueling, even for gods."
"I'm prepared for that," Kevin replied confidently.
"Why do you want my blood so badly?"
Kevin hesitated before answering, "There are people I need to defeat. People I need to protect."
Fenrir's scarlet eyes softened slightly. "And why bother trying to befriend me if you want to take my blood?"
Kevin thought for a moment before replying, "Because I like you."
Fenrir blinked, visibly surprised.
"They say you're cruel," Kevin continued, "but I see someone who can be reasoned with. I think we could get along. Besides," he added with a grin, "if we're friends, you won't hold a grudge once I pass Odin's tests and claim your blood, right?"
Fenrir stared at Kevin for a long moment before letting out a deep, rumbling laugh. "You're an odd human. Fine. Let's see if you can survive Odin's trials."
For the first time, Fenrir's piercing gaze held a flicker of respect.
