Chapter 63: 63: Accident
For the past half-month, Kevin had been spending his days with Fenrir and had learned a great deal about the monstrous wolf. Fenrir, for all its size and might, was not entirely mature in its mind.
This did not mean it lacked intelligence; in fact, it was incredibly perceptive, capable of discerning true intentions with uncanny accuracy. It was a trait inherited from its father, Loki, the god of trickery. Deception was futile, as Fenrir could easily see through lies.
However, Fenrir retained a childlike playfulness. It liked praise and enjoyed playful activities, but it also had a sharp memory for slights. If someone treated it poorly, it would never forget. In this way, Fenrir was both easy and difficult to get along with.
"Play with this?" Fenrir asked, his tail swishing as he examined the frisbee Kevin had produced. He sniffed it curiously, then turned to glance at the shield Slude carried.
Kevin chuckled. "Yeah. It's a game. You'll love it!"
The frisbee was no ordinary object. Kevin had enlisted Balder's help to craft it from divine materials, ensuring it could withstand Fenrir's destructive force. The toy gleamed under the sunlight, clearly enchanted with protective magic.
"Slude," Kevin called.
Slude nodded and stepped forward. As planned, she began drawing runes on Fenrir, carefully binding its immense power. The restraints shimmered faintly as they took effect.
Fenrir frowned, shaking its massive body. "What's this?"
"Relax," Kevin reassured him, raising his hands placatingly. "You're too strong! If we don't restrain you a bit, the game won't work."
After a moment of hesitation, Fenrir huffed and settled down. It tested the restraints, easily sensing that it could break free if necessary. Satisfied, it decided to humor Kevin.
"So, what's the game?"
Kevin grinned. "It's called Frisbee Snatch!"
Kevin explained the rules as he hurled the frisbee into the air. Fenrir watched it arc toward Slude, who caught it deftly.
Slude infused the frisbee with magic and tossed it back to Kevin, who was already sprinting away.
The game quickly escalated into a lively chase. Fenrir's powerful legs thundered against the ground as it darted after the flying disc, while Kevin and Slude coordinated to keep the frisbee away from the wolf.
"What's the point of this?" Fenrir growled, though its wagging tail betrayed its growing excitement.
"Just keep playing!" Kevin shouted over his shoulder, laughing.
Within minutes, Fenrir was fully engrossed, lunging for the frisbee with renewed determination. Kevin and Slude were forced to get creative to outmaneuver the beast.
As the game continued, Fenrir's roars and Kevin's shouts of protest filled the air.
"Hey! You're cheating!" Kevin yelled, narrowly dodging Fenrir's swipe.
"I'm not using more strength than allowed!" Fenrir retorted, though its massive frame seemed to move with suspicious ease.
"Slude, help me!" Kevin cried, running in circles to avoid being cornered.
Slude laughed and intercepted Fenrir, tossing the frisbee away just in time.
Hours passed in this chaotic, exuberant manner. By the time the sun began to set, Kevin and Slude were sprawled on the ground, panting and exhausted. Fenrir, on the other hand, sat nearby, pawing at the frisbee with boundless energy.
"You two are too weak," it complained. "Let's play more!"
"Give us a break," Kevin groaned. "We'll play again tomorrow."
Hearing this, Fenrir snorted but seemed appeased. It turned its attention back to the frisbee, swiping at it with a claw.
Kevin got to his feet and helped Slude up. "Be careful with that," he warned Fenrir. "Don't bite it too hard. It's tougher than it looks, but I doubt it's indestructible."
Fenrir waved them off dismissively. "Yeah, yeah. Go already."
Kevin rolled his eyes. "See you tomorrow!"
As they left the forest, Neil, the little bird, swooped down to perch on Kevin's shoulder.
"Kevin, there's trouble!" Neil squawked urgently.
"Trouble?" Kevin asked, startled. He glanced at Slude, who frowned in confusion.
"Something big just happened!" Neil continued. "All the gods are gathering outside the Silver Hall!"
Kevin's expression grew serious. "What's going on?"
Neil flapped her wings agitatedly. "I saw a burly man dragging Lord Loki like a prisoner into the hall!"
"Dragging Loki?" Slude gasped. "Could it be... Lord Thor?"
Thor, the god of thunder, was one of the few beings capable of subduing Loki.
Neil nodded vigorously. "Yes, that's him! And everyone looked really upset. They kept talking about... the goddess of youth, Idun. She's been captured!"
Kevin and Slude exchanged worried glances.
"The goddess of youth?" Kevin echoed.
"Yes!" Neil chirped. "They were saying something about her being taken, but I didn't catch the details. I flew here as fast as I could."
Kevin rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "If Idun's been captured, it's serious. Her apples are what keep the gods youthful, right?"
Slude nodded grimly. "Without Idun and her apples, even the gods will begin to age. This could threaten all of Asgard."
Kevin's eyes narrowed. "Then we need to find out what's happening."
Slude placed a hand on his shoulder. "Be careful, Kevin. If the gods are in turmoil, it might not be safe for you to get involved."
"Maybe not," Kevin replied, "but I can't just sit back and do nothing. Let's head to the Silver Hall."
With that, Kevin, Slude, and Neil hurried toward the heart of Asgard, uncertain of what awaited them but determined to uncover the truth.
