The Red Empire

Chapter 14: Night Attack

Chernov has no way to change the general decision, so he returns to his team and tells them about the news.

"Well then, let us find a place to camp."

"Chernov you have been fighting for two days, maybe it is time for you to rest."

Reznov was relaxed when he heard the news, he had seen many generals make the same mistake.

Soon, a few camp was set up, inside the forest.

A BTR was stationed beside the camp.

Tonight, the crew of it will stay here with them.

"Sokolov set up our newest infra-red device, and arranged for someone to be alerting for tonight."

"Affirmative, comrade Colonel."

After arranging for his members to be sentry alerting, he only returns to his camp with his weapon and equipment and closes his eyes to rest.

Of course, as a KBG officer, he will never lose alert on the battlefield.

But he will not know now, just because of his caution, how many lives he will save.

On the other side is the main camp of the 4th tank division.

Perhaps victory has gone to their head.

General Momotov did not care much about the sentry work, making his soldiers also not care.

Sentries that were arranged are not alert, instead almost sleep in the night.

They have been fighting for a whole day.

"The 4th Guards Tank Division has been away from war too long, making them forget what is war."

Seeing what they have done, Chernov says angrily to Reznov and Petrenko, and also his adjutant Sokolov.

"Is ok Chernov. Oh, how about the air supply? When will they arrive?"

"I have asked the officer who is responsible for it, they said the air supply will arrive a few hours later."

"Well, then we will be alert for this few hours. I hope is nothing going to happen, things will become better after we enter Valga."

Chernov agreed to Reznov's statement.

The whole thing is just because they lack preparation, making their logistics unable to follow up.

But to protect our people, it is worth it.

Inside his tent, it does not take a long time for him to get to sleep.

Slept until didn't know what time, Chernov suddenly heard a gun sound and shout from the outside.

He immediately grabbed his rifle walked out of his tent and met the others who also woke up.

He saw a few red flares shooting up into the sky.

"What is the situation now?"

Chernov shouted hoping someone to answer him.

"The orcs are attacking us!"

Sokolov came and reported to him.

Looking at the dark, Chernov has no idea where is the orcs and how far are the orcs from them.

"How far are they from us now?"

"From the infra-red device and flare, it is less than a hundred meters now."

"How are they able to reach us so close?"

"I am sorry colonel, I have no idea at all."

As no answer was given from Sokolov, Chernov could only first command his forces to get into their position.

He got to his position and took up his binoculars trying to know how many orcs were attacking them.

With the help of binoculars, he finally sees the orcs.

He sees the orcs charging at them from both ground and air.

Some charged towards them as usual, but less dense.

Some charged towards them through trees, swinging from one to the other one, like monkeys.

The BTR station beside them has turned on its night vision device, shooting towards the orcs with its 14.5mm KPVT.

Making them become pieces of meat.

But Chernov knows it can not hold long, they do not have enough ammunition.

"Bylat, we can not hold how much longer, we need to ask for air support from the army group."

"Anyone know how is the situation in the 4th Guards Tank Division?"

This time Reznov has come to Chernov's side and spoken madly,

"Chernov, maybe I could answer you."

"The soldiers of the 4th Guards Tank Division are running, a bunch of cowards, throwing their vehicles and equipment aside and running out of the forest."

"I have already asked Petrenko to stop them and form a line."

However, Chernov is still thinking of other solutions to defend themself from the orcs.

Seems like this is all they can do after facing this.

___

The 4th Guards Tank Division camp side is now falling into chaos, they are facing many more orcs than Chernov and also something else.

Soldiers are running everywhere, some officers try to stop them and form a line, but most of them have failed.

Petrenko is leading five KGB forces to stop soldiers who are trying to run from their positions.

He raises his gun and shoots into the air, then points towards those soldiers, giving them a warning.

"Go back to your position!"

"No step back, remember how your predecessors gave you the title of Guards."

Soldiers were stopped escaping, but none of them were returning to their position.

A panicked lieutenant walked out and said,

"Comrade major, we can not stop them, you will not believe what have met in the camp."

"There are a few vampires, those that can become a bunch of bats and then regroup in front of you."

"Our bullet can not damage them, but they can just kill us instantly."

"Comrade major, I suggest you run as well, as long as we live, we still have a chance to fight back."

What the lieutenant said was new and shocking, which was never heard by any one of them.

However, Petrenko does not accept what the lieutenant has said to be an excuse to escape.

He shoots another round of bullets on the ground and says,

"I believe what you have said comrade lieutenant, but this can not be the reason for you to escape."

"These five KGB special forces besides me came from Leningrad, they have seen much more than you, did you see them running?"

"Form a line on the spot, stop the others who are trying to escape."

"Remember what you guys have seen on the trip, how these orcs treat our people!"

"If you are running away from the battlefield now, imagine how your family and friends in the great mother Russia will be treated."

"Do as I say if you still remember the reason why you joined the army."

The lieutenant seems like recalling what he saw on the road, or he may be recalling the oath he made when he joined the army, or he may be recalling his family.

Whatever the reason it is, he decided to stop running.

"Comrade, do as what the major said, formed a line here."

Soon, more and more running soldiers stopped and joined the line.

Yet, there are still some has successfully run away from the battlefield.

One KGB special forces raise his AK and is ready to shoot those cowards, but then stops by Petrenko.

"Let these cowards run, if they have successfully escaped, they can tell what has happened here, if not, they will still come back."

A few minutes later, unexpectedly, these soldiers ran back panicked towards Petrenko.

"Comrade Major, we are surrounded by the orcs, they are everywhere."

"Alright calm down comrade, grab your rifle and join the line, and you still have a chance to live."

He then asked a KGB special force to send this message to Chernov through radio.

After receiving this news, Chernov slapped the ground hard several times.

"Bylat! Bylat! Bylat!"

"Sokolov, how long will our air support arrive?"

"Another 20 minutes, they are loading bombs and weapons now."

"Tell them to be faster, we can not hold for another 20 minutes, they either reach here in ten minutes to provide air support for us or reach here in another two days to collect our dead body."

The BTR has used all of its ammunition, only relying on its secondary weapon, a 7.62mm PKT light machine gun.

Orcs are now coming closer and closer.

"Chernov calm down, where are the nearest troops to us?"

"Uncle Reznov, it is the 275th Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment stationed in Oru, that last village we occupied."

"Then send our coordinates to them."

"Uncle Reznov you mean ..."

Reznov has seen the hesitation on Chernov's face.

"Yes, that is what I mean, do not hesitate to do that, necessary sacrifices are needed."

"In Stalingrad, Sergeant Yakov Pavlov and his platoon held the building for more than a month, which is longer than the French hold."

"They have asked for the artillery to bomb them for few times, and they survive."

"If we get the artillery fire on our position, we have a chance to survive, if not, we will die here."

"Make your decision, Chernov."

Chernov struggles, looking at the orcs that are closer and closer, he makes his final decision.

"Sokolov, contact the 275th Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment, send them our coordinate and ask them to bomb here."

"Affirmative."

A few minutes later, in Oru, artillery pounding.

In front of the position, the explosion is happening, forming many big holes in the ground.

These are the 2S1 Gvozdika 122mm, 2S3 Akatsiya and 2S5 Giatsint-S 152mm self-propelled gun that is equipped by the 275th Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment.

Such strong artillery fire able them to destroy most of the things in the world.

"Everyone get into cover!"

Chernov and his team do not have solid covers to hide, only covers that are just newly built a few hours before when they reach here.

What they can do is only pray that no artillery shell will hit their position directly.

The same thing happened in the camp of the 4th Guards tank division campsite.

Bats, orcs and dead bodies are everywhere.

Tanks and vehicles are just stationed at a side, silently looking at all this happening.

Only a few of them have successfully broken through and gotten to Petrenko's side.

Now, artillery shells are also dropping here, bombing everything that remains in the camp.

One shell, accidentally, hit the division command post directly.

A huge flame forms by the shell eliminating the vampires and the orcs inside there who just killed General Momotov, his chief of staff and other staff officers.

The battles continue, but it seems like getting better for the Soviets.
