The Return of the Void Emperor

Chapter 23: Beneath the Surface

The mine groaned around them. Small rocks crumbled from the ceiling, and the flickering torchlight cast jagged shadows along the walls. Li Tian sat cross-legged near the entrance, his hands pressed against the cold earth as the void pulsed through him. The energy twisted and writhed, barely restrained, but he couldn't afford to lose control—not here, not now.

The villagers huddled in the far corner, their whispers hushed but sharp with fear. Their eyes darted between the broken formations and the sealed tunnel, their faces pale and lined with exhaustion. Even the children, too frightened to cry, clung silently to their parents. The old man stood watch near the tunnel mouth, his blade balanced and ready, though his movements were slower now. Blood still clung to his clothes, and exhaustion had settled into his features like cracks in old stone.

"You need rest," Li Tian said without opening his eyes.

The old man grunted. "I'll rest when they stop coming."

Li Tian let the void flow through the formations etched into the dirt. The patterns glowed faintly, reinforcing the barrier that held the entrance. But cracks already spiderwebbed through the lines, fragile and unstable.

"This won't hold," Li Tian said. "Not if they hit it hard enough."

The old man glanced at him. "Then we make sure they don't get the chance."

Li Tian opened his eyes, the faint glow fading as the void settled. He wiped sweat from his brow and stood. His limbs trembled, but he pushed the weakness aside. The fight wasn't over yet.

"We need to expand the formations," Li Tian said. "If we collapse the side tunnels, we can force them into a bottleneck."

The old man's eyes narrowed. "And trap ourselves in here?"

"It's better than being surrounded," Li Tian replied. "We can hold the bottleneck longer—and if we need to, we can collapse it completely."

The old man hesitated, then nodded. "I'll get the villagers started. You focus on the formations."

Li Tian knelt again, tracing new patterns into the dirt. The void pulsed eagerly, feeding into the symbols as they took shape. But the energy felt heavier this time, more unstable. The lines wavered as cracks formed beneath his fingers.

He gritted his teeth and forced the void to obey. The energy surged outward, filling the patterns and solidifying the lines. But the effort left him shaking, his breath ragged. The symbols pulsed once, then dimmed, barely holding.

The old man returned, leading a handful of villagers carrying picks and shovels. They began clearing debris and carving deeper into the side tunnels. The sound of metal striking stone echoed through the chamber. Sweat glistened on their faces, and their movements were frantic, spurred on by desperation.

Li Tian stood, wiping dirt from his hands. "I need more time."

"You'll get it," the old man said. "But not much."

The words barely left his mouth before a tremor rippled through the ground. Dust rained from the ceiling, and the villagers froze. A muffled thud echoed from above, followed by another.

"They're here," Li Tian said.

The old man raised his blade. "Get ready!"

Li Tian forced the void into the formations, reigniting the symbols. Light flared along the ground, weaving through the cracks and sealing them for the moment. The entrance shuddered as something struck the barrier, and the glow dimmed under the pressure.

"They're pushing through," Li Tian growled.

The old man stepped forward, his stance firm despite the tremor in his hands. "Then we push back."

The first cracks appeared in the barrier. Light bled from the edges, and the void surged wildly in response. Li Tian gritted his teeth, forcing it to stabilize, but each blow against the entrance weakened the seal.

The barrier shattered.

Dark shapes poured through the breach, their blades gleaming in the dim light. The villagers screamed, retreating deeper into the tunnels as the old man met the first wave.

Li Tian unleashed the void, arcs of energy lashing outward and scattering the attackers. But the strain hit him hard. Blood trickled from his nose, and his vision blurred as the void twisted inside him.

"Hold the line!" the old man shouted, cutting through another attacker. "Don't let them pass!"

Li Tian forced the void outward, reforging the symbols as fast as they broke. Energy surged through the tunnel, but the cracks kept spreading, faster than he could seal them.

A figure stepped through the breach, taller and heavier than the others. His armor gleamed like obsidian, and the blade in his hand pulsed with dark energy.

The old man froze. "That's no ordinary soldier."

Li Tian's pulse quickened. The void roared, sensing the threat, and for the first time, Li Tian didn't hold it back.

Energy exploded outward, engulfing the tunnel in blinding light. The attackers staggered, but the armored figure stepped through the storm unscathed.

Li Tian fell to one knee, his breath ragged. The void twisted inside him, hungering for more, but he forced it down.

The armored figure raised his blade, and the void pulsed wildly.

"Get back!" Li Tian shouted, pushing the villagers deeper into the tunnel.

The old man moved to intercept the figure, but the blow sent him sprawling against the wall. Li Tian surged forward, his hands blazing with void energy.

The two forces collided, light and shadow twisting in the confined space. Li Tian gritted his teeth as the void strained against the pressure, but the figure didn't falter.

"You're not strong enough," the figure said, his voice like gravel. "And this time, there's no escape."

Li Tian's vision blurred, but he pushed harder. The void surged, brighter and wilder, and the tunnel shook beneath their feet.

The ceiling cracked.

"Fall back!" the old man shouted, dragging a villager to safety.

Li Tian released the void. Energy erupted outward, collapsing the tunnel behind them. The armored figure vanished in the rubble, but the tremors didn't stop.

Li Tian fell to the ground, gasping for breath. The void still pulsed, but quieter now, subdued.

The old man knelt beside him. "You're still alive."

"For now," Li Tian replied, his voice faint.

The villagers gathered around them, their faces pale but determined. Li Tian met their eyes and forced himself to stand.

"We keep moving," he said, his voice steady despite the exhaustion. "This isn't over."
