Chapter 30: Awakening the Abyss
The cavern roared with energy as the massive figure pulled itself free from the fissure. Its form remained shrouded in swirling shadows, but its eyes burned like twin suns, casting eerie reflections against the stone walls. Li Tian's breath caught as the void inside him surged again, desperate to connect with the being that had emerged. The oppressive pressure of the void thickened, weighing on his chest as though it sought to crush him from the inside.
"Hold your ground," the chained figure commanded, stepping back. Its voice echoed with a harsh authority that reverberated in the depths of Li Tian's soul. "This is not a foe you can face with hesitation."
Li Tian planted his feet, forcing his breathing to steady. The weight of the void pressed harder, but he clung to the threads of control that remained. His hands trembled as tendrils of dark energy rippled around his fingers, responding to his will. Yet, beneath the surface, the void clawed at him, hungry and impatient.
The creature shifted, its hulking mass twisting unnaturally as its limbs stretched outward. Shadows coiled from its form, snaking across the floor toward Li Tian like living chains. The ground shuddered beneath him, and the carvings along the walls flared with light, reacting to the surge of power. The light pulsed unevenly, as if struggling to contain the chaotic energy filling the chamber.
"Focus!" the chained figure snapped. "Do not let it feed on your fear."
Li Tian gritted his teeth and raised his hands. The void erupted outward, forming a barrier of light that clashed against the creature's tendrils. Energy crackled as the two forces collided, sending shockwaves rippling through the cavern. Dust and debris rained down, but Li Tian held his stance.
The creature recoiled briefly, but the shadows quickly adapted, probing for weaknesses in Li Tian's defenses. Sweat dripped down his face as he poured more energy into the barrier, his muscles straining against the pressure. Each pulse of the void sent jolts of burning heat through his veins, threatening to rip apart his focus.
"Enough!" the chained figure roared. It stepped forward, its own shadows surging outward to reinforce Li Tian's defense. "You cannot hold it back forever. Attack!"
Li Tian's eyes widened. "Attack? How? This thing—"
"Is a test!" the figure interrupted. "You wield the void, but you still resist its call. Let it flow through you. Command it, or it will consume you."
The creature lunged, and Li Tian barely dodged as claws of shadow slashed through the air where he had stood. He rolled, channeling the void into a blast of energy that struck the creature's side. It howled, its form rippling as the shadows peeled back, revealing jagged flesh beneath. Black ichor dripped to the floor, sizzling as it touched the stone.
For the first time, Li Tian saw weakness.
Seizing the opening, he pushed harder, unleashing another surge of energy. The void flared, brighter and stronger, as tendrils of his own power lashed out, striking the creature and driving it back. The cavern trembled, and cracks snaked outward from the impact.
The chained figure laughed, a harsh and hollow sound. "Good. But do not falter now. It will not fall easily."
The creature shrieked, its shadows surging outward in a wave. Li Tian braced himself, forming another barrier, but this time the pressure was overwhelming. The void roared within him, threatening to tear free, its hunger swelling with each passing moment.
"You must release it!" the chained figure shouted. "Stop resisting!"
Li Tian clenched his fists, the energy within him spiraling out of control. The shadows pressed closer, and the cavern walls groaned as cracks splintered outward. Dust rained down, and the glowing carvings began to dim. The void surged, demanding release, and Li Tian felt his grip slipping.
"I can't—" Li Tian gasped, falling to one knee as the void raged against his restraints.
"Then you will die here," the chained figure said coldly. "And the abyss will claim this world."
The creature roared again, closing the distance. Li Tian's vision blurred, but in that moment, something shifted. The void twisted, snapping free of his control—and for the first time, he didn't resist.
Darkness exploded outward, engulfing the cavern in tendrils of lightless energy. The creature shrieked as the void tore into it, ripping through its shadows and striking at its core. The force of the attack sent shockwaves outward, knocking both Li Tian and the chained figure to the ground. The cavern walls groaned as debris rained down, but Li Tian could no longer stop.
The void burned through him, filling the chamber with wild, chaotic energy. The creature writhed, its body breaking apart under the relentless assault, yet the void pressed harder, refusing to relent. Li Tian screamed as the force threatened to consume him along with his enemy.
"Control it!" the chained figure shouted. "Pull it back before it devours you!"
With every ounce of focus, Li Tian wrestled with the void, forcing it to retreat. The darkness writhed before snapping inward, collapsing back into him with a final pulse of energy. Silence fell.
Li Tian pushed himself to his feet, his body trembling. The void still pulsed within him, but it felt different—calmer, yet heavier, as though it had tasted freedom and now hungered for more. The creature lay in ruins, its form dissolving into smoke and ash.
The chained figure rose, its glowing eyes fixed on Li Tian. "You wielded it," it said. "But this was only the first step. The abyss has awakened, and now it watches you."
Li Tian swallowed hard. "What does that mean?"
The figure stepped closer, its shadows curling inward. "It means the real battle has yet to begin. You opened the door. Now you must learn to close it—or be devoured."
Li Tian looked down at his trembling hands, the last traces of void energy fading from his skin. Despite the victory, the weight of what lay ahead pressed down harder than ever.
He met the figure's gaze. "Then teach me."
The figure's shadows rippled. "We begin now."
With that, it turned and stepped deeper into the tunnel. Li Tian followed, the void stirring once more as the shadows closed around them.
