Chapter 9: Clash of Shadows
The clearing burned with energy, the symbols etched into the ground flaring like dying stars. Li Tian stood at the center of the storm, his robes torn and drenched with sweat. The void throbbed within him, raw and unstable, but he pushed forward, forcing it to obey.
The leader of the Iron Claw Sect advanced, his jagged blade gleaming with the residue of shattered formations. The man's aura pressed down like a hammer, heavy and suffocating. He wasn't just a disciple—he was a captain, someone who had stepped beyond the realm of ordinary cultivators.
"You should've run when you had the chance," the leader sneered, his voice carrying over the crackling energy. "This is the price of defiance."
Li Tian's eyes burned with defiance. "And this is the price of arrogance."
The symbols around him pulsed, weaving together as he raised his hand. The void surged, bending the energy into jagged tendrils that lashed outward. The ground trembled as the attack shot forward, but the leader met it head-on. His blade glowed with dark energy, slicing through the tendrils and scattering their remnants.
The backlash sent Li Tian stumbling, his vision blurring. The void bucked against his control, threatening to consume him, but he gritted his teeth and held firm. He couldn't falter—not now.
The leader's men pressed forward, navigating the broken formations with practiced ease. Two of them lunged at Li Tian, their weapons flashing. He twisted aside, narrowly avoiding the first strike, and thrust his palm outward. Energy erupted from his fingertips, slamming one attacker back, but the second closed the distance.
Pain flared as a blade grazed his shoulder, tearing fabric and flesh. Li Tian hissed but didn't slow. He retaliated, striking the attacker's chest with a burst of force that sent him sprawling.
The leader was on him in an instant, his blade descending in a deadly arc. Li Tian barely raised his arm in time to block, channeling void energy to form a barrier. The impact shattered the barrier and drove him to one knee.
"Is this all the void can offer you?" the leader taunted, pressing forward.
Li Tian's lips curled into a bloodied smile. "You haven't seen the void's true face."
He slammed his palm into the ground, activating the final layer of formations. Energy roared outward in a shockwave, engulfing the clearing in blinding light. The ground buckled, and cracks spiderwebbed beneath their feet.
The leader staggered, his blade raised defensively, but the energy didn't dissipate. Instead, it gathered around Li Tian, coiling like a serpent poised to strike.
The void answered.
Li Tian rose, his body trembling but his gaze unyielding. The formations pulsed in unison, feeding him power. The leader's confidence faltered, his eyes narrowing as he raised his blade.
"You've sealed your fate!" the leader roared, charging through the storm.
Li Tian met him halfway. Their clash sent arcs of energy crackling through the air, each strike echoing like thunder. The void surged around Li Tian, amplifying his attacks, but the leader's blade cut through the chaos with ruthless precision.
Blow after blow, the two fought, their movements blurring as power exploded around them. The clearing shook, trees bending under the force of their strikes. The other sect members hesitated, unwilling to step closer to the maelstrom of energy.
Li Tian's breaths came hard and fast. The void strained against him, its power unstable, but he channeled it recklessly. Each strike pushed him closer to his limit, but he refused to yield.
The leader lunged, his blade aiming for Li Tian's heart. At the last moment, Li Tian twisted, deflecting the blow with a surge of energy that sent the leader skidding back.
Blood dripped from Li Tian's wounds, but his stance remained firm. "I told you," he said, his voice low but steady. "You should have brought more men."
The leader's eyes burned with fury, but beneath it, Li Tian saw something else—fear.
The void pulsed, hungry and unrelenting.
And Li Tian let it feed.
The ground trembled as Li Tian unleashed another wave of void energy, forcing the leader to retreat several steps. The remaining sect members scrambled to reform their lines, but their hesitation gave Li Tian precious seconds to breathe. The formations pulsed, feeding him fragments of power as he fought to maintain control.
The leader growled, his blade glowing with dark energy. "Do you think this will save you?" He gestured sharply, and his men pressed forward again, their blades slicing through the unstable formations.
Li Tian cursed under his breath. Cracks spiderwebbed through the arrays, and the symbols began to flicker. He poured more energy into them, but the strain gnawed at his dantian. Pain flared, but he forced it aside.
"You're already breaking," the leader sneered. "This fight is over."
Li Tian met his gaze, eyes blazing. "Not yet."
He slammed his hands together, and the remaining formations erupted. Energy surged outward, forcing the attackers to scatter. The leader shielded himself, but the blast left his men disoriented.
Li Tian didn't waste the opportunity. The void roared as he drew it inward, weaving it into a spear of pure energy. He hurled it at the leader, who barely deflected the blow, his blade cracking under the force.
The impact sent the leader staggering, but Li Tian collapsed to one knee, his vision swimming. The void pulsed wildly, barely restrained. He couldn't hold it for much longer.
The leader straightened, his breath ragged but his eyes burning with rage. "You'll die here."
Li Tian forced himself to stand. "So will you."
The void answered one last time, and the clearing exploded in light.
