Chapter 22: A Fateful Encounter
The early morning bustle of the city was a stark contrast to the quiet intensity of the Kagemoritai training grounds. Shiro and Chiyo had spent the night recovering from their meditative trials, their minds and bodies still reeling from the experience. But there was no time to rest. Kenzo had more plans for them.
Kenzo: "Today, you'll be continuing your training outside the facility. We've identified a hotspot for rogue devil activity near the old industrial district. Your task is to patrol the area and ensure no threats remain."
Shiro: "Understood. We'll handle it."
Chiyo: "As long as he doesn't slow me down."
Shiro shot him a glare, but before he could retort, Kenzo cut in.
Kenzo: "Focus. You two did well yesterday, but that doesn't mean you're invincible. Stay sharp."
With their mission clear, Shiro and Chiyo set off toward the industrial district. Unbeknownst to them, Yui had been growing increasingly suspicious of Shiro's behavior. Determined to uncover the truth, she decided to follow them.
Yui trailed Shiro and Chiyo from a distance, careful not to get too close. She had noticed the changes in Shiro—his distracted demeanor, the secretive conversations. Something was off, and she intended to find out what.
Yui (thinking): Shiro's hiding something. But what? I need to get closer.
As she moved through the crowded streets, she lost sight of them for a moment. Panic surged through her, but she quickly spotted them again, heading toward an old, abandoned warehouse.
Yui: "What are they doing here?"
She carefully made her way inside, staying hidden behind stacks of crates. She watched as Shiro and Chiyo patrolled the area, their movements cautious and deliberate.
Just as Yui was about to give up and leave, a low growl echoed through the warehouse. Her heart pounded as she saw a figure emerge from the shadows—a rogue devil, its twisted form hunched and menacing.
Rogue Devil: "More intruders… you'll make for an excellent meal."
Yui's breath caught in her throat. She tried to back away quietly, but her foot caught on a loose piece of metal, sending it clattering to the ground. The devil's head snapped in her direction, its eyes gleaming with malice.
Yui (whispering): "Oh no…"
Before she could react, the devil lunged at her, its claws slashing through the air. Yui screamed, raising her arms in a futile attempt to shield herself. The devil's strike sent her crashing into a stack of crates, knocking her unconscious.
Shiro and Chiyo heard the commotion and rushed to the source. They found Yui lying unconscious, the rogue devil looming over her.
Shiro: "Yui! No!"
Chiyo: "Yui? What is she doing here? We need to take this thing down before it hurts her."
The devil turned its attention to them, its lips curling into a cruel smile.
Rogue Devil: "More prey… this is my lucky day."
Shiro and Chiyo readied their weapons, their eyes locked on the devil. The battle that followed was fierce and relentless. The devil was stronger and more cunning than the ones they had faced before, its attacks unpredictable and brutal.
Kageboshi: "Don't let your anger cloud your judgment, Shiro. Stay focused."
Yamitsuki: "Strike with precision, Chiyo. Don't give it any openings."
The devil's claws clashed against their weapons, sending sparks flying. Shiro used his shadows to create barriers and launch counterattacks, while Chiyo's spear danced through the air, striking with deadly accuracy. Despite their efforts, the devil's strength began to overwhelm them.
Shiro: "We can't let it win… we have to protect Yui."
Chiyo: "I know. Just keep it distracted for a bit longer."
With a final, desperate surge of energy, Shiro unleashed a powerful shadow strike, momentarily stunning the devil. Chiyo seized the opportunity, delivering a devastating blow that pierced the devil's heart. The creature let out a horrifying scream before disintegrating into ash.As the dust settled, Shiro and Chiyo stood panting, their bodies bruised and exhausted. Shiro rushed to Yui's side, his heart pounding with fear.
Shiro: "Yui… please wake up."
Chiyo stood guard, his eyes scanning the area for any additional threats. After a tense moment, Yui's eyes fluttered open, her gaze unfocused.
Yui: "Shiro… Chiyo… what happened?"
Shiro: "It's okay, Yui. You're safe now."
Just as relief washed over Shiro, his vision began to blur, and a wave of exhaustion crashed over him. The adrenaline that had kept him going finally gave out, and he collapsed, losing consciousness.
Chiyo: "Shiro! Damn it… we need to get them both to safety."
Chiyo lifted Shiro onto his shoulder and carefully helped Yui to her feet. Together, they made their way back to the Kagemoritai headquarters, knowing that this was just the beginning of their battle against the rogue devils.
