The Rise of a New Demon King

Chapter 33: A Surge in the Shadows

The darkened halls of a long-abandoned cathedral echoed with the sound of footsteps. A figure clad in black armor, adorned with jagged, crimson lines resembling veins of molten lava, strode purposefully toward the altar. His presence exuded a mix of discipline and menace.

Kael knelt before the altar, his head bowed as if awaiting instruction. Suddenly, the air around him grew colder, the faint whispers of an ancient language reverberating through the chamber.

Voice: "Rise, Kael. Your master summons you."

Kael stood, his fiery eyes gleaming as he turned to face the source of the voice. Emerging from the shadows was another figure, their aura equally commanding. Unlike Kael's volatile energy, this newcomer exuded a more refined yet deadly calmness.

Kael: "What brings you here, Nareth?"

Nareth, the new general of Orithius's growing army, stepped forward. His voice carried a sharp authority, like the blade of a guillotine.

Nareth: "The time approaches, and our forces must be ready. The Master has entrusted me with coordinating the next phase. You've done well holding your ground, but now, it's time to escalate."

Kael smirked, his pride evident.

Kael: "I hope your plans are worthy of his trust. I won't allow failure to taint my name."

Nareth's icy gaze pierced Kael, silencing his bravado.

Nareth: "This isn't about your pride, Kael. It's about preparing for the inevitable. The Seal's destruction will demand more than brute strength—it requires precision, strategy, and sacrifice."

Kael bristled but held his tongue as Nareth turned toward the cathedral doors. His voice carried a final, chilling command.

Nareth: "Do not disappoint him. Failure is not tolerated."

As Nareth disappeared into the shadows, Kael clenched his fists, his resolve hardening.

Kagemoritai Headquarters

Shiro and Chiyo stood before Kenzo in the main briefing room. The map behind him displayed a glowing red marker pulsing ominously in the western part of the city.

Kenzo: "We've got a new rogue devil sighting, and guess what? This one's for you two."

Shiro tilted his head.

Shiro: "Just us? What about you?"

Kenzo smirked, leaning against the table.

Kenzo: "I have my own mission to worry about. You're not children anymore. It's time to see if you can handle yourselves without my help."

Chiyo twirled his spear, confidence radiating from his stance.

Chiyo: "We can handle it. What's the threat level?"

Kenzo shrugged nonchalantly.

Kenzo: "It's tagged as a high C-Rank, maybe low B. Manageable if you don't screw up."

Shiro and Chiyo exchanged determined glances. Despite their confidence, an air of uncertainty lingered.

Kenzo: "One last thing: don't get cocky. You've been doing well in training, but real combat doesn't forgive mistakes. Stay sharp."

The sun dipped below the horizon as Shiro and Chiyo arrived at the outskirts of an industrial zone. The air was heavy with an oppressive energy that made their skin crawl.

Shiro: "This doesn't feel like a C-Rank…"

Kageboshi's voice echoed in Shiro's mind, grave and urgent.

Kageboshi: "It isn't. Be ready. This devil is far more dangerous than anything you've faced before."

Chiyo gripped his spear tightly, his expression uncharacteristically tense.

Chiyo: "Whatever it is, we'll take it down. Just don't slow me down."

The ground trembled slightly, a faint hum resonating through the air. From the shadows emerged a tall, imposing figure. His black armor glinted faintly under the moonlight, and his crimson-veined weapon pulsed with dark energy.

The figure stepped into the light, his voice calm but laced with menace.

Nareth: "Ah, the Kagemoritai's newest recruits. What an amusing coincidence. Allow me to introduce myself… I am Nareth, and I'll be the last thing you see."

Shiro's eyes narrowed, his instincts screaming at him to move.

Shiro (thinking): This guy isn't like the others. He's stronger… smarter.

Chiyo raised his spear, his voice firm.

Chiyo: "We've taken down devils before. You're no different."

Nareth tilted his head, a faint smile playing on his lips.

Nareth: "Bravado. How charming. Let's see if you can back it up."

Without warning, Nareth lunged forward, his speed far exceeding their expectations. Shiro barely managed to summon his shadows in time to block the attack, but the force sent him hurtling backward.

Shiro: "Damn… He's fast!"

Chiyo retaliated, thrusting his spear with deadly precision. Nareth deflected it with ease, countering with a strike that sent Chiyo sprawling.

Nareth: "Is this the best the Kagemoritai can offer? How… disappointing."

Kageboshi's voice echoed urgently.

Kageboshi: "Shiro, focus! This isn't a fight you can afford to lose."

Kagemoritai Headquarters

As Kenzo and Akira boarded the transport, the tension between them was palpable.

The air inside the Kagemoritai command center was thick with tension. Screens displayed a live map of the city, a bright red marker pulsing ominously in the industrial district. Akira and Kenzo stood side by side, their expressions grim.

A young operative approached, his face pale.

Operative: "Sir, we've recalibrated the readings. The rogue devil's power level has been updated… It's an S-Rank."

Kenzo's smirk faltered, his eyes narrowing.

Kenzo: "S-Rank? That can't be right. Those two are only supposed to be dealing with mid-level threats."

Akira clenched his fists, his usual calm replaced with visible concern.

Akira: "And yet, they're the ones on the ground."

Kenzo turned toward him, his tone unusually serious.

Kenzo: "Akira, we need to move! Now! If this thing is what I think it is, those two don't stand a chance!"

Akira nodded, his gaze steely.

Akira: "Get the fastest transport ready. If we're late…"

He didn't finish the sentence. Both men rushed toward the exit, their urgency palpable.

Kenzo (thinking): Hang on, you two. We're coming.

As Kenzo and Akira boarded the transport, the tension between them was palpable.

Kenzo: "I knew something like this would happen. Those two aren't ready for this."

Akira's voice was cold but steady.

Akira: "Then let's ensure they survive long enough to be ready. Orithius warned me this was coming. I won't let him be right."

Kenzo glanced at Akira, surprised by his tone.

Kenzo: "You think he's behind this?"

Akira's gaze darkened.

Akira: "I know he is. And if we're late… Shiro and Chiyo are done for."

The transport sped through the city, its engines roaring as the two warriors prepared for the worst.
