The Role of the Reaper

Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Dungeon Merchant

The air inside the dungeon was heavy with tension as Shin led the five survivors to safety. Each step brought him closer to completing his quest, but there was no room for complacency. The survivors whispered their gratitude before disappearing beyond the dungeon's exit. A notification echoed in his mind:

Quest Completed: Rescue Survivors.

Rewards: 20,000 XP and 5 Gold Coins = to 3 million Astari,.

Shin sighed, his hand instinctively resting on the hilt of his dagger as he continued his exploration. The dimly lit halls stretched endlessly, but then—

DING.

The haunting chime of a bell echoed through the dungeon. Shin froze, his senses sharpening instantly. His dagger slid into his grip as his eyes scanned the shadows ahead. Emerging from the darkness, a figure draped in tattered robes and an oversized hood appeared, exuding a strange aura.

The figure chuckled, his voice smooth yet eerily jovial. "Now, now, no need for violence. I'm not your enemy, young one."

Shin's glare remained cold, his dagger unwavering. "Who are you?"

The figure raised his hands in mock surrender, his grin visible beneath the hood. "I'm merely a Dungeon Merchant, summoned by the dungeon itself to provide... services. Nothing more."

Unconvinced but unwilling to waste time, Shin slowly lowered his weapon and began walking away.

"Wait a moment," the Merchant called out. "Perhaps you've seen the challenge posted within these very walls? If your weapon can impress me, I'll grant you a reward unlike any you've seen."

Shin paused mid-step, his memory flashing back to the cryptic message etched on the dungeon walls. Turning, his gaze hardened. "You're saying you'll reward me if my weapon surprises you?"

The Merchant nodded, his tone arrogant. "Indeed. But be warned—if it fails to impress, I will claim it as my own. Are you willing to risk it?"

Shin smirked, his confidence unwavering. "Fine."

The Merchant's grin widened, his cocky demeanor evident. "Very well, show me what you've got."

Shin's expression shifted, his smirk turning dangerous. In a smooth motion, he reached behind him, grasping the dark aura coiling at his back. Slowly, deliberately, he pulled forth his most fearsome weapon.

The Fate Scavenger.

A massive, menacing scythe materialized, its blade forged of a shadowy metal that gleamed ominously. Chains wrapped around the handle, secured by dark locks, and at its center, a glowing, demonic red eye pulsated like a heartbeat. The ground beneath Shin's feet trembled as a dark aura seeped into the air, spreading like smoke.

The Merchant's eyes widened in awe. His cocky grin faded, replaced by genuine astonishment. "W-What is this monstrosity?! Is that... a real eye?!"

Shin's smirk deepened. "Yes. Did it scare you?"

The Merchant swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "It looks like... like a demonic eye. What is this weapon made of?"

Shin chuckled darkly. "That's for me to know."

The Merchant's curiosity was uncontainable, his eyes sparkling like a child who'd just discovered a treasure trove. "Can I... touch it?"

Shin raised an eyebrow but handed over the scythe. The moment the Merchant reached for it, his hands phased through the weapon as though it were made of smoke.

"Wait... huh? Why can't I hold it?" the Merchant stammered.

Shin chuckled. "Oh, my bad. Try again."

The Merchant made another attempt, this time gripping the scythe with both hands. A groan of effort escaped his lips as the weapon suddenly became unbearably heavy. He strained, veins bulging in his arms, but he couldn't lift it an inch.

"Aaargh! I... I give up!"

Shin grabbed the scythe effortlessly, the dark aura retreating into the blade as he rested it on his shoulder. "Looks like it doesn't like anyone but me."

The Merchant laughed nervously. "Yes... I'd say that's accurate."

Placing the scythe back into the swirling aura at his feet, Shin crossed his arms. "Now, about that reward?"

The Merchant snapped out of his daze, clapping his hands together. "Oh, yes, of course. Are you ready?"

Shin's eyes gleamed with anticipation. "Always."

From the folds of his robe, the Merchant produced a large, ornate chest. He set it before Shin, the lock clicking open with a simple wave of his hand. The chest creaked as it revealed its contents, and Shin's eyes sparkled with greedy delight.

Inside were treasures beyond measure:

Invisibility Cloak: A shimmering fabric that seemed to vanish under the light. Dragon Armor: A majestic set of armor that radiated power and resilience. Dragon Barrier Spell: A scroll containing a spell to summon an impenetrable barrier of dragon scales, perfect for deflecting magical attacks. Health Potions: Gleaming vials of red liquid. 10 Million Astari,: Golds piled high in the chest to. Magic Spells: Ancient tomes inscribed with powerful incantations.

Shin's grin widened as he grabbed the Invisibility Cloak. "Not bad. Not bad at all."

The Merchant chuckled nervously, his earlier arrogance replaced by respect. "You truly are something else. I've never seen a weapon like yours in all my time as a Dungeon Merchant."

Shin slung the cloak over his shoulder, his mind already racing with plans for the treasures he'd just acquired. "I'll take that as a compliment."

With his new rewards in hand, Shin turned and disappeared into the dungeon's shadows, leaving the Merchant behind, still marveling at the encounter.
