Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Preparation Before the Journey
The morning sun poured through the window, casting a warm glow over the room. Shin stretched, feeling refreshed after a good night's sleep. Fully recovered from the dungeon exploration, he was ready for the next challenge.
Kuro yawned and stretched on the bed, his tiny form looking deceptively harmless. Meanwhile, Miko was already awake, sitting cross-legged on the floor and practicing with his wooden sword. His movements were clumsy, but his determination was clear.
Shin smirked. "Looks like someone's eager to start the day."
Miko looked up and grinned. "If we're going on a high-difficulty quest, I need to be ready!"
Shin nodded approvingly. "Good attitude. But first, let's eat. A warrior needs a full stomach before training."
A Hearty Breakfast
The trio made their way to the bustling streets, heading toward Shin's favorite restaurant. It was a cozy, rustic place with wooden beams and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The tantalizing aroma of grilled meat and freshly baked bread wafted through the air, making Kuro's nose twitch with excitement.
They found a table near the window, and the waiter quickly approached.
"What'll it be today?" the waiter asked, a friendly smile on his face.
Shin leaned back in his chair. "Bring us a feast. Meat, bread, drinks—everything you've got."
The waiter's eyes widened slightly but nodded. "Coming right up."
When the food arrived, it was a spread fit for royalty. Plates piled high with roasted meats, steaming vegetables, and baskets of fresh bread covered the table. There were also pitchers of sweet fruit juice and mugs of spiced tea.
Miko stared at the feast in awe. "This is... amazing!"
Kuro wasted no time, eagerly tearing into a piece of grilled chicken. His tail wagged as he ate, his small form barely able to keep up with his voracious appetite.
Shin took a bite of roasted lamb and sighed contentedly. "Enjoy it while you can. Training's going to be tough."
Miko paused mid-bite, looking a little nervous. "How tough are we talking?"
Shin smirked. "You'll find out soon enough."
Training Begins
After finishing their meal, they headed to a secluded training ground just outside the town. It was a grassy field bordered by tall trees, with a small stream running through it. The area was quiet, perfect for training.
Shin turned to Miko, crossing his arms. "First lesson: You need to stop flailing that sword around like a stick. A weapon is an extension of your body. Treat it with respect."
Miko nodded, gripping his wooden sword tightly. "Got it!"
Shin demonstrated a series of basic stances, moving with precision and fluidity. "Watch closely and copy my movements. Focus on balance and control."
Miko tried to mimic Shin's movements, stumbling a few times but gradually improving. Shin corrected his posture, adjusting his grip and stance until Miko's strikes became more deliberate.
"That's better," Shin said, nodding in approval. "Now, practice until it feels natural."
While Miko practiced, Shin turned his attention to Kuro. The tiny tiger looked up at him with curious eyes.
"Your turn, buddy," Shin said, crouching down. "You're strong for your size, but we need to work on your transformations. A tiny tiger won't scare anyone."
Kuro tilted his head, letting out a playful growl.
Shin placed his hand on Kuro's head, channeling a small amount of dark energy. "Feel the power and let it grow. Focus, and picture your true form."
A dark aura surrounded Kuro, and his tiny body began to grow. His fur bristled, and his playful demeanor shifted to something more fierce. Within moments, he transformed into a massive tiger, his once small frame now towering over Shin.
"Good," Shin said, patting Kuro's side. "But you need to maintain this form longer. Let's see if you can hold it while moving."
Kuro roared, shaking the ground, and began to practice running and pouncing in his larger form. His movements were powerful but a bit clumsy, and Shin guided him, ensuring he controlled his strength and agility.
Sparring and Strategy
As the sun climbed higher, Shin called for a break. Miko collapsed onto the grass, panting heavily, while Kuro returned to his smaller form and curled up in the shade.
"Not bad," Shin said, tossing Miko a water flask. "You're improving, but you've got a long way to go."
Miko took a long drink, his face determined. "I'll get there. Just watch."
Shin chuckled. "That's the spirit."
After the break, Shin and Miko began sparring. Shin used a wooden sword to match Miko's, keeping the fight balanced. He pushed Miko to think on his feet, testing his reactions and strategy.
"Don't just swing blindly," Shin said, parrying a strike. "Predict my movements. Find an opening."
Miko gritted his teeth and focused, managing to land a hit on Shin's side.
"Good," Shin said, smirking. "But don't get cocky." He disarmed Miko in a single swift motion, the wooden sword flying from the boy's hands.
Miko groaned. "How do you do that so easily?"
"Experience," Shin said simply. "Keep practicing, and you'll get there."
Ready for the Journey
By the time they finished, the sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the training ground. Miko and Kuro were exhausted but visibly stronger.
Shin looked at them, a faint smile on his face. "You've both done well. Rest up tonight. Tomorrow, we head for the village."
Miko nodded, determination burning in his eyes. Kuro let out a small growl, as if to say he was ready for anything.
As they walked back to the town, Shin's mind turned to the quest ahead. The village's plight was a mystery, and he had no doubt that whatever they faced would be dangerous. But with his growing team by his side, he felt confident.
The journey was just beginning, and Shin was ready for whatever came next.
