Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Shadows of the Unknown
The moon hung high in the star-studded sky, casting its silvery glow over the dense forest. Shin walked steadily, the faint crunch of leaves under his boots echoing in the eerie quiet. Beside him, the mini tiger, whom he had named Kuro, padded silently, its bright red eyes gleaming like tiny embers in the darkness.
The child, Miko, clung tightly to Shin's cloak, his small hands trembling. "Are... are we safe now?" he whispered, his voice barely audible over the rustling trees.
Shin, dressed in his dark, tattered outfit with his signature silver-and-black hair gleaming faintly in the moonlight, glanced back over his shoulder. His pale gray eyes locked with Miko's frightened gaze. "Safe? Not yet. This forest doesn't forgive carelessness."
As if to confirm his words, a distant howl pierced the silence, low and guttural. Miko flinched, clutching Shin's arm. "W-what was that?"
Shin narrowed his eyes, his hand instinctively brushing against the hilts of his daggers. "Something we don't want to meet. Let's keep moving."
They trudged onward, weaving between towering trees whose gnarled branches seemed to reach for them. Every now and then, Shin's sharp senses picked up the faintest movements—shadows darting just out of sight. His instincts screamed danger, but he kept calm, masking his unease with a stoic demeanor.
Suddenly, the air grew heavier, colder. The forest seemed to come alive, whispering dark secrets carried by the wind. Kuro let out a low growl, its hackles rising. Shin froze, signaling Miko to stay behind him.
From the shadows, a figure emerged. It was humanoid, but its grotesque form betrayed its inhumanity. Its skin was blackened, as if scorched, and its eyes glowed an unnatural, malevolent green. It carried a long, jagged blade, and its presence radiated malice.
Shin's grip on his daggers tightened. "Stay back," he commanded Miko, his voice cold and steady.
The creature let out a low, guttural laugh, its voice like grinding stones. "A mortal dares enter our domain?"
Without hesitation, Shin stepped forward, positioning himself between the monster and Miko. His expression was unreadable, but his stance exuded confidence. "I didn't know this forest was 'owned.' You'll have to forgive my intrusion."
The creature snarled, its blade glinting in the moonlight as it lunged at Shin with blinding speed.
Shin sidestepped effortlessly, his movements fluid and precise. He countered with a quick slash of his dagger, aiming for the creature's arm. Sparks flew as the blades clashed, the force of the impact sending vibrations through Shin's hand.
"Fast," Shin muttered, a hint of a smirk forming on his lips. "But not fast enough."
The battle intensified. The creature swung its blade with wild ferocity, each strike heavy enough to split the ground. Shin danced around its attacks, his agility and precision keeping him just out of reach.
"Shadow Walk," he whispered, activating his newly acquired skill. His form flickered, disappearing into the shadows before reappearing behind the creature. With a swift, calculated strike, he drove one of his daggers into its side.
The creature roared in pain, its green eyes flaring brighter. It spun around, swinging its blade in a wide arc. Shin ducked, the blade narrowly missing his head, and retaliated with a powerful kick to the creature's chest, sending it staggering backward.
Kuro joined the fray, leaping onto the creature's back and sinking its tiny but sharp claws into its charred skin. The creature howled, trying to shake the mini tiger off, but Kuro held firm, its growls fierce and determined.
"Good boy," Shin muttered, his smirk widening.
As the creature faltered, Shin saw his opening. Channeling his dark energy, he infused his daggers with shadows, their blades pulsing with a sinister glow. With a burst of speed, he closed the distance and struck, his daggers slicing through the creature's neck in a clean, precise motion.
The creature froze, its body trembling before collapsing to the ground in a lifeless heap.
Shin stood over its corpse, his breathing steady despite the intensity of the fight. He flicked the blood off his daggers and sheathed them, turning to Miko.
"See? Nothing to worry about," he said, his tone casual as if the battle had been nothing more than a minor inconvenience.
Miko stared at him, wide-eyed. "You're... incredible," he stammered.
Shin shrugged, ruffling the boy's hair. "Stick with me, kid. You'll be fine."
Kuro trotted over, its tail wagging proudly. Shin crouched down, scratching the mini tiger behind its ears. "You did well, little guy."
The three continued their journey, the forest gradually thinning as they approached the edge. The sight of the distant village lights brought a sense of relief, but Shin knew better than to let his guard down.
The night might have spared them this time, but the shadows always lingered, waiting for their moment.
