Chapter 33: Chapter 33
Chapter 33: Six Point Cabin (Part Two)
This incident made Arthur more vigilant. He couldn't shake the feeling that Malloy had ulterior motives. Was he a fence-sitter, always ready to switch sides? Despite his suspicions, Arthur decided not to confront Malloy directly. He wanted to see how things played out.
Without concrete evidence that Malloy intended to betray him, Arthur couldn't bring himself to abandon him. After all, Malloy had proven to be incredibly useful.
After carefully confirming the direction with Kieran, Arthur saw John still complaining.
"Who knows which bastard isn't telling the truth."
Arthur felt like kicking John to death. But now wasn't the time.
Finally, they reached a forest. After tying up their horses, Arthur and the others cautiously moved forward. Soon, they spotted O'Driscoll gang members patrolling the outskirts.
"I hope Colm O'Driscoll is really here," Bill said, looking at Malloy.
John, excited, added, "Let's end this long-standing feud here. Dutch will be thrilled."
Arthur rolled his eyes at John's enthusiasm for Dutch. He then assessed the camp's situation.
Malloy pointed to a cabin and said, "Colm is in there."
Arthur nodded, committing the information to memory, and began assigning tasks.
"Alright, the plan is simple. We sneak in and take out anyone we see. Try not to be noticed. Any problems?"
"If we're discovered, we strike directly at the cabin. Let the other O'Driscoll members escape, but we must get Colm."
"I'm with you."
"I'll keep an eye on you, Kieran."
"Trust me, I won't betray you. It would be suicide."
Arthur glanced at everyone, ignoring their comments. He assumed they had no other objections and confirmed with Malloy,
"Colm is in the cabin?"
Malloy nodded confidently, "Drunk out of his mind, probably seeing stars."
As they crouched and whispered, three patrolling enemies approached.
"So, who's going to tell the boss we found nothing?"
"Let me think, who scared off the prey?"
"I need to pee. You go ahead, I'll catch up."
The one needing to pee was clearly the one who messed up. The other two weren't fooled.
"No way. We'll wait here, so you can tell him yourself."
"Fine, fine. If anyone kills their own men without hesitation, it's that ruthless bastard. You're asking for my life." The man, seemingly resigned, unzipped and urinated against a tree.
Arthur and the others were nearby. After a quick glance, Arthur said, "Let's move."
"Morgan, what about the guy peeing by the tree?"
"I'll take the first one. You and John handle the other two."
Arthur took out his dagger and quietly approached. He covered the man's mouth with one hand and swiftly slit his throat with the other, then gently lowered the body to the ground.
Meanwhile, John and Bill used throwing knives to take down the other two from a distance.
"Now what? Do we storm the camp?" Bill asked, retrieving his knife as they advanced.
"Arthur, there's one sitting by the woodpile ahead."
To avoid any mishaps, Arthur took care of the enemy himself.
"Nice, Arthur. Now what? We're at the camp's edge."
"Find cover and wait for my signal. I'll scout ahead."
"Alright, no problem." Malloy and Cole hid behind a distant tree, while John and Bill found their own cover.
Arthur continued sneaking and silently dispatched another enemy near a cart, hiding the body and covering it with a cloth before moving on. He saw another patrolling enemy near some rocks but decided to leave him for later. He hid behind a supply wagon and overheard a group of O'Driscoll members chatting by the fire.
"Hey, how much did we get?"
"It doesn't matter how much. What matters is how many fools we've fed to the vultures. That's the secret to getting in the newspapers, haha."
The group laughed loudly. One with a high-pitched voice continued,
"The more people we kill, the more they'll send after us. That's exactly what we want. More targets to practice shooting."
Arthur, hiding behind the wagon, checked his ammo. He estimated there were only five enemies ahead, plus the patrolling one, making six obstacles to the cabin.
He aimed and shot the nearest three in the head. As they fell, the other two quickly retaliated, firing at Arthur's position. Their bullets hit the wagon, and John and the others, hearing the gunfire, opened fire on their targets.
It was a standard ambush.
The gunfight ended quickly as the remaining enemies fled. Deputy Cole, hiding farther away, didn't get a kill.
Seeing the O'Driscoll members dealt with, Arthur stopped the others from chasing them and quickly approached the cabin to deal with Colm.
Unfortunately, just as he reached the door, it was violently pushed open, knocking Arthur to the ground. Dazed, he looked up to see an O'Driscoll member aiming a gun at him, ready to fire.
"Bang!" The gunshot echoed.
Arthur, covered in blood, realized Malloy had saved him.
"Are you okay?"
Arthur, lying on his back, said, "Of course, thanks."
He got up, gun in hand, and entered the cabin. After a quick look around, he found no sign of Colm O'Driscoll. Realizing they might have been led astray, he stormed out to confront Malloy.
"He's not here. Did you set us up?" Arthur pointed his gun at Malloy.
"If I had set you up, I wouldn't have saved you just now. It was just bad luck that he wasn't there. But we did deal a significant blow to Colm. That should be a good enough answer to sever ties with the O'Driscolls."
Arthur fell silent, realizing he had overreacted.
Even if it was a setup, Colm had been hit hard. He wouldn't bother them for a while, and Malloy had clearly cut ties with the O'Driscolls. As long as Malloy cooperated, Arthur's plans could proceed smoothly. The outcome was a success, so why dwell on the process? Malloy had proven himself an ally.
"Sheriff Malloy is right."
Malloy smiled and lit a cigarette.
"I promised we'd get to know each other better. Curtis Malloy."
He extended his hand, and Arthur shook it firmly.
"Arthur, Arthur Morgan."
