chapter 47 - Emergency While Divine Cat Mii-chan Sleeps
47: Emergency While Divine Cat Mii-chan Sleeps
In the middle of the night, an emergency occurred while Mii-chan, the divine cat, was sleeping. I woke up to the sound of an alarm bell ringing.
Not knowing what was happening, I was groggy but got up and changed clothes just in case it was a fire.
I gently placed the sleeping Mii-chan into the carrier bag, put on my gear, and went outside. Outside, I saw hunters running towards the Hunter Guild. To find out what was going on, I decided to head to the Hunter Guild as well.
In front of the guild, a large number of hunters had gathered and were in an uproar. I spotted Henry and went over to him.
“It happened just as you said, Nero.”
When the hunters who went to check on the village arrived, they found it surrounded by a group of goblins and hurried back to report.
The lord of this region, upon receiving this report, issued an emergency request to the Hunter Guild. They were now preparing to send the lord’s private soldiers and hunters as reinforcements to the village.
“May I ask something?”
“What is it?”
“Is the labyrinth area safe?”
“It’s in the opposite direction of the attacked village, so it should be safe…?”
Henry hurriedly ran to where the guild staff had gathered.
“What is it, Nero? This isn’t your time to act.”
“That’s right. Leave it to us.”
“Well, I guess tomorrow’s labyrinth exploration is canceled.”
“Lack of sleep is terrible for the skin, you know.”
“Can’t Mira’s healing help with that?”
“What are you all talking about? The village is under attack!”
Haha… Somehow, this conversation takes the edge off.
“Canceling tomorrow’s labyrinth exploration is fine, but are we sure everything’s okay over there?”
“By ‘over there,’ you mean the labyrinth?”
“Yes.”
“There’s nothing to gain from attacking that place.”
“Yeah, you’re overthinking it, Nero.”
With that, the members of the Blue Dragon’s Roar headed out as the first wave of reinforcements for the village.
What should I do? Is it okay for me to go back to bed? For now, I’ll head over to where the guild staff are gathered.
“We need to ensure safety!”
“Sending reinforcements to the village is more important!”
“The labyrinth’s defenses aren’t ready yet! What do we do if something happens?”
The heated debate continued.
“All our horses are already out!”
“Then go borrow one!”
“Where are we supposed to find a horse trained to run at night?”
“Borrow one from the lord!”
“We’ve already done that. The only ones left are for emergency messengers!”
“There’s still one horse left in the stable!”
Oh no, I have a bad feeling about this…
“The battle horse should be fine. I don’t know whose it is, but if it’s the guild staff’s, it should be fine. Send that one!”
“Quiet down!”
From inside the guild, Eva and an elderly man emerged.
“Right after we returned… Is there someone named Nero here?”
Ah, I’ve been called…
“Yes, that’s me.”
“Come this way.”
Who could this be? Well, they must be someone important.
“We finally meet. I am Selion, the guild master of Quint and also the acting guild master of Quarto.”
A guild master, and also the acting guild master of Quarto.
“I’ve been quite busy and was supposed to meet you in Quarto, but we missed each other. So, this is our first meeting in Quint.”
“Uh, I’m Nero. Nice to meet you.”
“We can do formal introductions later. Let me ask you directly, that battle horse is yours, right?”
“Yes.”
“Can you ride it?”
“I’ve never ridden it before.”
“What about letting someone else ride it and run?”
“Well, I’m not sure. You’d have to ask the horse.”
“Then, go ahead and ask it.”
And so, I went to the stable where Sumire was.
“Hey, Sumire. Just in case, if I asked, would you let me ride you?”
Sumire gave a shiver of affirmation.
“Then, if I asked you to let someone else ride, would you?”
Sumire responded with a shiver of negation.
“Looks like it’s not possible.”
“I see… But you’re saying you will let me ride, right?”
Oh no, this feels like a very bad situation.
“Yes, but I have no experience riding horses…”
“A battle horse is a wise animal. Once it has chosen its master, it won’t throw them off.”
Sumire gave a confirming shiver. Seriously? Asking a novice to ride…
“Prepare yourself. This is also the fate of a Hunter Guild member.”
That sounds like a line I’ve heard before…
“The battle horse is quick to adapt. It’s just a matter of confirming things.”
“…”
The guild staff were already fitting Sumire with the necessary gear. Looks like there’s no escaping this.
“Ha… If I die, you better take responsibility.”
“If you die, I can’t take responsibility! Just come back alive. I’ll treat you to some good food.”
“That’s a promise. Also, please make sure to pay the danger allowance and for Sumire’s efforts.”
“Uh, yes. I’ll do my best.”
They escorted me to the gate, and I went outside.
Mii-chan showed no signs of waking up and was sleeping soundly, breathing comfortably. I bet she has no idea there’s an emergency going on. Still, it’s a mystery whether it’s the carrier bag’s performance or Mii-chan’s resilience that allows her to sleep so soundly amid all this chaos.
“Sumire, do we need any light?”
Sumire shook her head in negation. No light needed.
“Is the labyrinth area okay?”
Sumire nodded in affirmation. Impressive, Sumire. Without map skills, I’d definitely get lost in such darkness.
Somehow, I mounted Sumire.
“Sumire, I’m counting on you.”
Sumire started running, gradually increasing speed…
“They’re surrounded by goblins.”
“What is everyone doing?”
“We’re not sure, but they might have fled into the labyrinth…”
“Gather people immediately! Wake up anyone passed out in the tavern! Call all the guild staff who can fight! I’ll go too!”
“But I can’t fight.”
After all, I’m weaker than goblins…
“I know. Stay at the guild.”
Is it okay for me to go back and rest? I’m so tired… Right, Sumire?
Sumire gives a confirming shiver.
