Chapter 39: 38 Clown
The Kingdom of Aldegia is a small nation located in Northern Europe, governed by a constitutional monarchy.
Though modest in size, this country is renowned for its highly developed magical technology, which is among the most advanced in the world.
Notably, the Kingdom of Aldegia shares a border with the Warlord's Empire, ruled by the First Primogenitor. In the past, it had been engaged in ongoing conflicts with the Night Empire of the First Primogenitor, with battles so fierce that even the capital had been destroyed at one point.
Despite the intense warfare, Aldegia had its share of victories and defeats against the First Primogenitor, making it a well-known nation across Europe, celebrated for its courageous and formidable citizens.
The latest developments from the Kingdom of Aldegia, such as the creation of the Völundr system and the fabricated Holy Sword, have significantly bolstered its military strength, making it a force to be reckoned with.
Aboard a flight from Itogami Island to Aldegia, Saigou and Natsuki Minamiya sat in the first-class cabin of an Ardikia Airlines plane.
Natsuki Minamiya was dressed in an elegant Gothic gown, a beautiful choker adorning her slender neck, with her jet-black hair cascading down her shoulders.
Her delicate and refined features made her appear like a beautiful doll, especially when she wore a serious expression.
Her long, graceful legs were clad in deep black silk stockings, adding an extra touch of princess-like elegance and aloofness.
At this moment, Natsuki Minamiya was holding a dossier on the Kingdom of Aldegia, intelligence gathered by the Island Management.
"Ever since the signing of the Sanctuary Treaty, there have been no major conflicts between the Warlord's Empire and the Kingdom of Aldegia."
"However, due to the deep-seated enmity between the Aldegia military and civilians and the Warlord's Empire, there are occasional skirmishes along the border, though overall, peace has prevailed."
Natsuki's sapphire-blue eyes narrowed suspiciously as she glanced at Saigou.
From every angle, the Kingdom of Aldegia and the Warlord's Empire appeared to be in a state of peace. Why would this devil suddenly decide to go there? Was he planning to stir up war?
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Saigou put down his magazine and turned to Natsuki Minamiya with a faint smile.
"North America and the United States uphold human supremacist ideologies, and there are no demons present within their borders.".
"Adjacent to the United States, the Night Empire of the Chaos Bride in Central and South America is too isolated and mysterious, rarely interacting with the outside world."
"This has resulted in a very peaceful environment in the Americas."
"But Europe is different. In Europe, humans and demons coexist, and the conflicts between them are sharp and numerous. There are terrorists everywhere."
"Such a complex environment is perfect for observing the lifestyles of humans and demons, as well as the irreconcilable conflicts between them."
"Your wish is for peaceful coexistence between humans and demons, but without a detailed understanding of the conflicts between these two races, your wish will never come true."
"Although the Kingdom of Aldegia and the Warlord's Empire appear peaceful on the surface, both nations have militarists who are eager for war."
"They will undoubtedly use every means possible to exacerbate the conflicts between humans and demons to provoke war."
"Natsuki-chan, you can use these people as targets to hone your strength."
"In strengthening your own abilities, you can also eliminate these warmongers, bringing peace to the world. Why not do both?"
Saigou's reasoning seemed sound, but Natsuki Minamiya found it hard to trust his words.
After all, a devil advocating for world peace was too unbelievable.
Seeing Natsuki Minamiya's distrustful expression, Saigou didn't say much more. Instead, he abruptly changed the topic:
"Do you know what the true wish of Aya Tokoyogi, whom you imprisoned in the Barrier Jail, really is?"
Natsuki Minamiya's heart tensed. She gave Saigou a puzzled look and asked, "Why are you suddenly bringing up Aya?"
Imprisoning Aya Tokoyogi in the Prison Barrier had been one of the most heartbreaking decisions for Natsuki Minamiya, as she considered Aya a friend and ally.
However, it was something she had to do. If she hadn't imprisoned her, a defeated Aya Tokoyogi would undoubtedly come back with a vengeance.
Natsuki Minamiya couldn't guarantee she could always thwart Aya Tokoyogi's plans, and those plans would inevitably lead to the destruction of Itogami Island.
"I just want to tell you a truth and then watch your shocked expression and your pain, sorrow, and sadness," Saigou said with a malicious smile. However, Natsuki Minamiya did not know this was actually Saigou's way of provoking her.
"You must think that Aya Tokoyogi's wish is 'to verify the reality of this world and see that powerless world,' right?"
"Is there something wrong with that?" Natsuki Minamiya's heart skipped a beat, but she kept her expression neutral, pretending to be calm.
"Of course it's wrong, just as you used the wish for the Prison Barrier to deceive others and hide your own desire for 'peaceful coexistence between humans and demons.'"
"…Likewise, Aya Tokoyogi used a similar method to conceal her true wish."
"The true wish of the Witch of the Notaria was actually to 'save all witches,' and more specifically, to save you, Natsuki Minamiya!"
"…Her desire to create a world without magic was merely a means to save witches and eliminate devils."
"To save you, she was willing to bear the guilt of six hundred thousand lives."
"…Yet as her ally, her closest friend, you not only failed to see her true wish but even imprisoned her, who wished to save you, in a prison."
"Aya Tokoyogi must be in great despair and pain now, probably hating you to the core."
"…Natsuki-chan, you've destroyed your own friendship with your own hands!"
Saigou whispered in a devilish tone close to Natsuki Minamiya's delicate ear, "…Others might not see it, but as a devil, I could never mistake her true wish."
Sitting beside Saigou, Natsuki Minamiya's expression flickered with uncertainty.
Though she tried her best to suppress her emotions, the veins bulging on the back of her hand that clutched the magazine betrayed her inner turmoil.
She wanted to believe that Saigou's words were lies, but rationally, she found herself unable to dismiss them.
As the devil said, his primary goal was to see her in pain and despair.
So, this is Aya's true wish? It turns out she was doing all this for me.
'It seems it wasn't Aya who betrayed our friendship, but I who was the betrayer all along.'
Natsuki Minamiya had never thought that the clown was, in fact, herself.
"Sir, would you like something to drink?"
A flight attendant from Aldegia Airlines approached Saigou with a smile and asked.
"I'll have a glass of wine, and for my daughter, a glass of juice." Saigou replied with a gentlemanly smile.
The flight attendant glanced at Natsuki Minamiya in surprise. "…Oh, is this young lady your daughter? You look so young, sir."
The flight attendant's eyes reflected a hint of disappointment.
She had thought she might encounter a romantic encounter with this distinguished-looking man, only to find out that he was already married and had a daughter this old.
"Haha, perhaps it's a family trait."
Natsuki Minamiya, for once, did not retort. At this moment, the witch was completely lost in her daze, overwhelmed by the realization of her betrayal of friendship.
