Chapter 185: Chapter 185: Forbidden Zone and Black Thunder
To many wizards, only wizard tools are considered true magical items.
Items below this, like alchemical and twilight-grade items, are seen as inferior or substandard.
Even the lowest tier of wizard tools, the first-tier, is far more powerful than twilight-grade magical items.
High-tier wizard tools can even rival legendary artifacts.
In the brightly lit workshop, a wide workbench was cluttered with twilight-grade magical items.
These were crafted by Sunan over time.
Sunan had already decided on the type of wizard tools he wanted to create.
First and foremost was a protective wizard tool, which was essential.
Given the past effectiveness of the Ring of Extreme Protection, Sunan decided to continue with this type for his new protective wizard tool.
In fact, force field protection is the choice of the majority of wizards.
Aside from physical attacks, protective force fields are excellent at defending against intangible attacks like soul impacts.
However, Sunan's plans were more ambitious than mere defense.
Simple defense alone was no longer sufficient for his needs.
Ideally, the tool would offer additional functions alongside protection.
Adding offensive capabilities was not feasible.
Even for dual-purpose items like the magic core, offense and defense are separate and cannot occur simultaneously.
The same principle applies to magical items.
But while offensive capabilities were out, some auxiliary abilities, such as control or debuffs, were possible.
Sunan found inspiration in the design blueprints for magical items among the books he acquired from the Starlight Tower.
He borrowed ideas from various magical items and designed a new alchemical-grade magical item.
The reason it was alchemical-grade was that creating a new twilight-grade magical item is much more challenging.
Since he could enhance it through synthesis, Sunan opted for simplicity, focusing on realizing the desired functionality.
The magical ring he crafted retained the invisible force field protection of a protective ring, but the field no longer clung tightly to the body. Instead, its volume expanded significantly, forming a spherical force field with a one-meter radius centered on the user.
Any enemy entering this field would be suppressed, as if burdened by a heavy pressure buff, greatly restricting their movements.
This way, the new magical item combined defense with control capabilities.
Of course, adding functions came at the cost of reduced effectiveness for each individual function.
The most noticeable reduction was in the force field's defensive capability.
But Sunan wasn't concerned, as synthesis could address this issue.
Placing the rings from the workbench into the synthesis cube one by one, he began the synthesis process.
With twenty-six rings, the synthesis interface displayed the word "Wizard Tool."
However, this was the lowest tier of wizard tools, and Sunan continued to add more rings.
For each additional ring synthesized, Sunan retrieved the wizard tool to test his perception.
Using wizard tools also requires sufficient mental energy.
Without adequate mental energy, forcibly using high-tier wizard tools would result in backlash, making it counterproductive.
He couldn't allow the wizard tool's power to exceed his capacity.
After synthesizing seventy-eight rings, Sunan finally sensed the limit approaching.
"So, this is the limit."
Sunan glanced at the synthesis interface, which still showed "First Tier."
He felt that this wizard tool was still some distance from breaking through to the second tier.
But his current power could only support it to this extent.
"I'll continue synthesizing once my refinement progress improves."
Sunan donned the ring and activated it.
In an instant, the surrounding air seemed to distort, and an invisible wave spread outward from Sunan.
Creak!
The metal workbench in front of him was suddenly compressed, as if an invisible giant hand was pressing down on it.
With a harsh, grating sound, the workbench, made of enchanted iron and far harder than the iron golems, was flattened into a pile of scrap.
Sunan mentally noted this oversight and quickly dispersed the pressure from the scrap metal.
As the user of the wizard tool, he could determine the target of the force field's effect.
"The force field radius is about five meters."
Sunan nodded in satisfaction.
This was effectively a small domain.
Judging by the flattened workbench, the force field's pressure alone could effortlessly kill a first-ring legend.
However, it would require some testing to confirm specifics.
Sunan teleported to the training area, releasing several adamantine golems and secret puppets to test them.
The results pleased him.
Even the formidable adamantine golems were immobilized within the force field.
The fourth-ring legendary secret puppets could barely move under the pressure, but their speed was no better than that of an elderly person in their seventies or eighties.
In essence, any creature below a wizard entering the force field would have to exert all their strength just to resist the pressure, leaving them incapable of doing anything else.
Against one or two-ring legendary creatures, what was originally an auxiliary pressure effect could have terrifyingly lethal consequences.
In terms of defense, the force field's protective value was between 53,000 and 55,000.
That's over fifty times the protection of the Ring of Extreme Protection!
Such astonishing defense was almost on par with his innate ability, "Liquid Metal."
Of course, "Liquid Metal" offers instantaneous damage defense, while the force field provides continuous damage defense. Once its energy is depleted, it needs to be recharged before use, making its defense not quite as reliable as the former.
The only advantage might be that it can be mass-produced.
"Too bad there's no wizard-level combat power available for testing, so I can't obtain more specific data."
Sunan felt a slight regret.
Nonetheless, the data obtained so far left him very satisfied.
"It needs a new name."
As he ran his fingers over the ring's textured surface, Sunan quickly decided on a name.
"I'll call it 'Forbidden Zone.'"
Synthesizing the Forbidden Zone nearly exhausted all the rings, forcing Sunan to pause his plans for creating a second item.
Like the Ring of Extreme Protection, he intended to synthesize at least five Forbidden Zones to carry with him.
One can never have too many life-saving measures.
However, the number of magical items needed to synthesize wizard tools was substantial, so he would need to accumulate more over time.
With the protective wizard tool sorted, the next focus was on offensive wizard tools.
In this area, Sunan was interested in a twilight-grade magical item from the Starlight Tower's design blueprints called "Black Thunder."
The primary material for Black Thunder was the Stone of Thunder, found deep within the Lightning Element Plane.
These stones, subjected to constant lightning strikes for centuries, had all impurities and dross worn away, leaving only the refined, essence-laden parts filled with highly volatile lightning energy particles.
Black Thunder, crafted from the Stone of Thunder, could transform all its stored energy particles into a violent, pitch-black lightning strike when activated, delivering a powerful blow.
Sunan valued this straightforward yet formidable attack style.
After all, for flexible attacks, he already had "Liquid Metal."
Among the materials from the Starlight Tower were several Stones of Thunder. Sunan spent a month crafting over a dozen Black Thunders and then synthesized the ultimate wizard tool.
Given the power of offensive wizard tools, even secret puppets couldn't withstand them, so he had to find a deserted area for simple testing before stopping.
To obtain comprehensive data, he would likely need to wait until the Hidden Dragon evolved into a dragon, providing a suitable test subject.
With the remaining Stones of Thunder, Sunan planned to craft more Black Thunders and synthesize a second wizard tool.
For further production, he would need to venture to the Lightning Element Plane to gather more Stones of Thunder.
While a first-level wizard doesn't have the ability for planar travel, a brief entry into an elemental plane is possible.
However, the Lightning Element Plane is known for its dangers, so Sunan planned to accumulate more strength and resources before entering.
It's worth noting that during the testing of the Forbidden Zone and Black Thunder, Sunan noticed a significant issue: charging the wizard tools.
Despite their immense power, wizard tools required far more energy particles for recharging than twilight-grade magical items.
In the current environment of the Starlight Continent, this made recharging wizard tools a lengthy process.
Preliminary estimates suggested that it would take over two months to recharge the Forbidden Zone.
Due to Black Thunder's reliance on lightning energy particles, its recharge time was even longer, taking about eight months.
The only benefit was that Black Thunder's power wasn't affected by energy scarcity.
Its power came from stored energy particles, after all.
"In future battles, I'll still try to rely on Liquid Metal."
Compared to spells and magical items, Liquid Metal's energy consumption was minimal.
Innate energy is inherently less affected by energy scarcity, and since Liquid Metal isn't heavily reliant on energy particle concentration, it was even less impacted.
Without this, Sunan's combat power as a wizard might not surpass that of a third-level wizard apprentice by much.
Putting away the wizard tools, Sunan exhaled deeply.
With the most crucial aspects of potions and wizard tools resolved, he could now focus on other areas.
For instance, constructs.
Recently, Sunan had filled in the high-level combat power for two small golem armies, bringing the Star Alliance to a total of six small golem armies.
More precisely, it was one medium-sized golem army and one small golem army.
The seventh small golem army was also in the works.
However, the main force crafting golems was the base's apprentices, with Sunan only responsible for a few high-level constructs, so it didn't take up much of his time.
His main focus was on secret puppets.
Over the past two years, the Star Alliance had developed three silver mines, including a medium-sized one, accumulating nearly thirty kilograms of mithril.
This was enough to craft two secret puppets.
However, Sunan didn't plan to do so.
In the past, due to limitations in skills, materials, and strength, he had to craft simplified versions of secret puppets.
Now that he had the materials, skills, and strength, he could attempt crafting the original version of secret puppets.
Complete secret puppets had combat power comparable to formal wizards!
"Complete secret puppets require about thirty-six kilograms of mithril."
Sunan had recently acquired a large amount of material from the Starlight Tower and the Council of Truth members' spatial rings, including over ten kilograms of mithril, plus the stock in Dragon Forest's warehouse, more than enough for crafting a complete secret puppet.
"The mental energy of a wizard level and level 5 [Puppet Crafting] are sufficient for crafting."
In addition to mithril, complete secret puppets required a large number of gems, rare metals, and most importantly, a medium-sized soul crystal.
Sunan now had an abundance of these materials, with a pile in his spatial ring, all contributed by the Starlight Tower and the Council of Truth.
However, having just completed the wizard tools, Sunan decided to rest for a few days before crafting the secret puppet.
Returning to the study, Sunan sat behind the desk, casually picking up a book.
Over the past few days, he had gradually read through the books brought back from the Starlight Tower.
Besides gaining knowledge, he also learned some secrets about the events from a thousand years ago.
In the multiverse, the Starlight Continent isn't the only plane that became an elemental desert.
Throughout various epochs, countless similar planes have existed.
Wizards have observed certain patterns from these occurrences.
There are many reasons for elemental deserts, but the most common are twofold.
The first is the weakening of the plane's origin.
In simpler terms, this means the plane's lifespan is nearing its end, leading to a rapid decline in elemental energy.
This type of elemental desertification is irreversible and will continue to worsen until the plane's origin completely dissipates, causing the entire plane to vanish.
The second relates to the planar barrier.
The multiverse contains myriad planes, each unique.
Not all planes possess gravity, soil, magma, sunlight, air, and water. Some are entirely void, lacking even a patch of land to stand on.
However, any complete plane that supports life inherently contains elemental energies like earth, water, wind, fire, and lightning, differing only in quantity.
These planes are separated from elemental planes by a special planar barrier, akin to a fabric with many tiny holes.
Through this "fabric," elemental energy can slowly seep into the plane.
The act of wizards (or apprentices) establishing an Elemental Pool is akin to enlarging one of these holes, increasing the influx of elemental energy.
However, a thousand years ago, the barrier between the Starlight Continent and elemental planes underwent a change.
The holes in this "fabric" shrank, drastically reducing the influx of elemental energy and turning the Starlight Continent into an elemental desert.
To address this, before leaving the Starlight Continent, wizards collectively repaired the planar barrier.
They estimated it would take about two thousand years for the barrier to fully recover.
During this time, the entire Starlight Continent would be isolated, preventing any life form beyond a certain level from entering or exiting without incurring a significant cost.
In fact, many planes have similar rules, which is why high-level beings like deities cannot easily descend to material planes.
Wizards reinforced these existing restrictions on the Starlight Continent to prevent high-level beings from disrupting the recovering elemental balance.
