Chapter 195: Chapter 195: The Last Opportunity

The trajectory of the war had exceeded everyone's expectations.

Starlight Calendar 1272, Scroll Month

The Starlight Empire conquered the Snow Lion Principality's capital, marking the end of the principality.

Starlight Calendar 1273, Winter Harp Month

The Starlight Empire annihilated the Newman Kingdom.

Starlight Calendar 1273, Summer Ridge Month

The Starlight Empire destroyed the Principality of Atlantis.

By Starlight Calendar 1275, the tide of war had turned completely. Over half of the original coalition of over a dozen nations that had banded together against the Starlight Empire had been vanquished.

Despite fighting on multiple fronts, the empire's might continued to grow, leaving its enemies feeling utterly powerless.

The balance of power had clearly shifted, and many began to believe that the southeastern continent would soon see its first true ruler.

While the surface war raged on, Su Nan remained focused on his cultivation.

Over the past few years, the frontlines had delivered more than twenty Spiderling corpses to his laboratory, allowing him to extract significant quantities of divine energy. His mental condensation had soared to unprecedented levels.

By Summer Ridge Month, Su Nan's mental condensation had reached 22.62%—a feat that would have otherwise taken over seventy years of diligent cultivation.

Yet he had achieved it in just six.

"The Spider Queen truly gifted me with a treasure trove," Su Nan mused with a slight smirk.

However, he couldn't ignore the recent decline in Spiderling appearances.

Despite his orders for the Star Alliance to go easy on the attacks, the five-year-long war had exhausted the resources and strength of Spider City.

Its forces had been reduced to the point where it could no longer defend its dozen subordinate city-states, leading to a steady contraction of its defenses.

Just recently, the Dark Elves had abandoned their last two remaining vassal cities, retreating entirely into Spider City's walls.

At this rate, even without further offensives, Spider City would soon be unable to sustain itself, much less produce more Spiderlings.

---

"If only they could hold out a little longer," Su Nan sighed. "Perhaps I should've ordered Sheyman to ease up even more."

For a brief moment, he considered halting all attacks to allow Spider City time to recover.

After all, as long as the city stood, it could continue to provide him with "supplements."

---

Yet he quickly dismissed the thought.

Would the Spider Queen cooperate so willingly?

The gods were far from naive, and the peculiar strategies of the Star Alliance over the past few years had likely aroused her suspicions.

Unlike the natives of the Starlight Continent, gods were well-versed in the ways of wizards.

The Spider Queen might have already deduced that Su Nan was harvesting divine energy.

Shaking his head, Su Nan set aside his concerns.

---

Meanwhile, in the Northwest Region, the war was progressing smoothly.

The so-called Falling Star Alliance proved no match for the Star Alliance.

With the deployment of the newly formed Third Medium Golem Legion, the Falling Star Alliance—already struggling—was pushed to the brink. Its defeat was only a matter of time.

Everything was moving in the right direction.

---

Spider City

War's oppressive shadow loomed over Spider City.

The streets were eerily quiet, save for the occasional heavily armed Dark Elf patrols, all hurrying with grim expressions.

As Tajana passed through the slave quarters, she could hear the screams of captives echoing from within the dilapidated houses.

Some Dark Elves were venting their frustrations by torturing slaves—a grim practice that had grown more frequent as the war dragged on.

Every day, numerous slave corpses were hauled out of the city to be burned.

---

Reflecting on the past few years, Tajana couldn't help but sigh.

This war felt like a mistake from the very beginning.

The Dark Elves had gained nothing from it.

---

The Twelve Houses of Spider City, once brimming with fervor and confidence, had been brought low—first with disbelief, then despair.

The ritualistic creation of over twenty Spiderlings had cost them dearly, yet all had fallen to the mysterious wizard girl of the Star Alliance.

Even ambushes involving multiple Spiderlings had failed, with every attempt ending in total annihilation.

Eventually, Spider City became so fearful of this girl that they avoided targeting any city-state where she was present.

But no matter where they turned their attention, the girl would inevitably appear on the battlefield as soon as a Spiderling emerged.

After several devastating encounters, she became the Dark Elves' living nightmare.

She and the Star Alliance were like an unyielding mountain, unshaken by the Dark Elves' relentless assaults.

---

The war brought Spider City nothing but dwindling resources and lives.

Many Dark Elves had willingly sacrificed themselves to fuel the creation of Spiderlings, yet their efforts proved futile.

Tajana saw no glimmer of hope for victory against the Star Alliance.

---

"Tajana!"

A familiar voice snapped her out of her thoughts. She turned to see Venia approaching briskly, eyeing her curiously.

"What were you thinking about so deeply? I've called you several times," Venia said, frowning.

"Nothing." Tajana shook her head and glanced at Vinnia, who looked dusty and travel-worn. "Did you just come back from outside?"

Vinnia nodded. "The Weapons Master needed skilled hands to scout the Star Alliance's movements, so I volunteered."

"Did you find anything?"

"No." Vinnia's face darkened as she shook her head. "Those spider constructs are too tricky. Even I couldn't sense their presence, so we didn't dare get too close."

Hearing this, Tajana's expression turned grim.

The Dark Elves, known for their prowess in assassination and stealth, rarely encountered creatures capable of rivaling them in the shadows.

Yet, the Star Alliance's Double-Blade Spiders were an exception.

These constructs emitted no soul aura, and their life signals were faint to the point of being nearly imperceptible. When motionless in the shadows, even Dark Elves found it nearly impossible to detect them.

To make matters worse, they moved with extraordinary speed and navigated the underground world's treacherous terrain with ease—far surpassing Dark Elves in scouting capability.

In the early days of the war, when the Dark Elves were unaware of the Double-Blade Spiders' power, they suffered heavy losses during reconnaissance missions. Many highly trained scouts had fallen to the spiders' razor-sharp limbs.

Now, no Dark Elf scout dared venture too close to Star Alliance territory.

No one knew how many Double-Blade Spiders lurked in the shadows.

---

"The Star Alliance has taken over the two cities we abandoned. Spider City is now completely surrounded."

Vinnia's tone was heavy, tinged with helplessness.

"Tajana, do you think we can win?"

Tajana pressed her lips together before speaking softly, "Spider City still has the protection of the Spider Queen."

At the mention of the Spider Queen, Vinnia's spirits visibly lifted, and she nodded vigorously.

"That's right! We have the Spider Queen's blessing. She is omnipotent!"

Tajana forced a smile, but only she knew how hollow her words were.

If the Spider Queen were truly omnipotent, Spider City wouldn't be in its current dire state.

---

"By the way, the Matron Council meeting is today, right?" Tajana asked, steering the conversation away.

Vinnia nodded and glanced toward the central temple.

"It should have already started."

---

Spider City's Twelve Noble Houses each maintained separate family temples, but six years ago, after the Spider Queen delivered her divine decree to abandon infighting and unite against external foes, the houses had pooled their resources to construct a Central Temple.

This new temple dwarfed any family temple in scale, housing not only the Spider Queen's statue but also serving as the venue for discussing critical matters.

At that moment, the temple's grand Council Hall was filled with the twelve matriarchs of the noble houses.

---

Twelve Dark Elven women, all youthful and strikingly beautiful, sat around a long table. Their expressions ranged from indifferent to grim, and the oppressive silence suffused every corner of the hall.

Finally, Leresta, the matriarch of the leading house, broke the silence.

"The Star Alliance is closing in. Spider City is now fully surrounded by their golem legions. Does anyone have a solution?"

The room remained silent.

It was Aurora, the matriarch of the Orore House, who finally spoke.

"We cannot counterattack unless we deal with that wizard."

Her words were met with a heavy silence.

Everyone knew this was true, but no one had a solution.

Even the Spiderlings, their most powerful creations, had fallen to the girl wizard. What could they possibly do?

If they had a way to deal with her, they would have acted long ago.

---

"I suspect the Star Alliance has ulterior motives," said Valeduray, matriarch of the Valeduray House. "Their actions over the past years have been peculiar. It feels as though they're deliberately holding back."

The room fell quiet again as the matriarchs exchanged uncertain glances.

Filyr, matriarch of the Filyr House, sneered. "You're overestimating the Star Alliance."

Valeduray shot her a cold glare. "I'm simply stating facts."

"Or perhaps it's your house that's too cowardly to fight! During the defense of Uru City, it was your forces who fled first, leading to the collapse of the entire line!"

"That was an accident. The commander responsible has already been sacrificed to feed the spiders. What more do you want?"

"You—"

"Enough!"

Leresta's voice cut through the tension, her cold gaze silencing the bickering matriarchs.

"This is a time for unity. Put aside your grievances, unless you wish to defy the Spider Queen's decree?"

At the mention of the Spider Queen, both Filyr and Valeduray fell silent, though they continued to glare at each other.

Leresta ignored them and addressed the group.

"For the first time in 1,200 years, the Dark Elves have regained the Spider Queen's favor. This is a rare and precious opportunity. We must fulfill her decree and earn her blessing again!"

"If we fail, we will lose her protection. And without her, Spider City won't stand a chance against the Star Alliance."

The matriarchs' expressions grew solemn.

They all understood that Spider City was at a critical juncture.

Without the Spider Queen's protection, the city would fall.

---

"What should we do?" Aurora asked, frowning.

"We need a larger ritual," Leresta said without hesitation. "More Spiderlings must be created."

Her suggestion was met with furrowed brows.

The ritual to create Spiderlings required not only Dark Elves as sacrifices but also a vast number of spider species.

In their desperation over the past years, Spider City had exhausted almost all its spider stock. The newly bred spiders were still too young to be used in rituals.

Leresta had anticipated this and spoke firmly.

"We'll use forbidden methods to accelerate the spiders' growth. As for the slaves brought from the other cities, they've been taking up too much space anyway. We'll use them as fodder."

Aurora's eyes widened in realization.

No wonder Leresta had insisted on relocating the slaves from the abandoned cities. She had been preparing for this all along.

The other matriarchs couldn't think of a better solution and began nodding in agreement.

---

Just as they reached a consensus, a sudden shift in the air drew their attention.

All twelve turned toward the Spider Queen's statue.

A spectral spider appeared in midair.

"The Spider Queen!"

The matriarchs immediately fell to their knees, their faces filled with reverence and devotion.

A voice echoed in their minds, its message leaving them shocked and bewildered.

But soon, their expressions turned resolute as they bowed their heads low.

"Great Spider Queen, your will is our command!"

The spectral spider slowly faded.

---

After a long silence, the matriarchs rose to their feet.

"You've all heard the Spider Queen's decree," Leresta said, her face obscured in the flickering shadows of the council hall.

"She is displeased with our failures. This is our last chance to atone."

---

Filyr was the first to speak. "The Filyr House will contrib

ute one hundred of our most loyal warriors!"

One by one, the other matriarchs made their pledges, their faces grim.

Within moments, the council reached a unanimous decision.

They dispersed swiftly, each returning to their families to make preparations.

They all knew one thing:

This was Spider City's final opportunity.
