Chapter 20: The Storm of Heroes
Knox hovered over the chaos of New York, the city below a cacophony of fire, screams, and the sirens of desperate first responders. His work was unfolding exactly as planned.
Kaelina's voice broke through his thoughts, cool and steady. "You've grown faster and stronger, Knox. You're finally reaching a level where even the GPA's elite can ignore you."
Knox smirked, brushing the ash off his black cloak. "They'll come soon enough. Let them watch their empire fall apart."
Kaelina's tone sharpened. "They'll come, yes. But there's one you need to take care of first. Volt. You've faced him before. This time, you'll kill him. He's in Washington, and Seraph isn't with him."
Knox tilted his head at the mention of Volt. The speedster had been impressive in their last encounter, though not enough to force Knox to fight seriously. Even when Seraph had joined, their combined efforts had done little more than amuse him.
"And what do I get for killing him?" Knox asked.
Kaelina's voice was tinged with satisfaction. "Five percent added to your Superman Template and 10x training effect for the next week.
Knox didn't hesitate. The promise of more power, coupled with the opportunity to settle the score, was irresistible.
"I'll handle it," he said simply before launching into the sky.
Washington was eerily quiet as Knox landed in the heart of the city. He strode forward, his footsteps echoing off the empty streets. The silence didn't last long.
A crackle of electricity ripped through the air, and Volt appeared in a flash of blue light. His eyes glinted with a mix of amusement and annoyance as he leaned against a street lamp.
"You again," Volt said, his voice smooth but with an edge of irritation. "What's the matter? New York wasn't chaotic enough for you?"
Knox's lips curled into a smirk. "I didn't come here to chat, Volt. I came to finish you."
Volt straightened, the playful smirk fading into a determined scowl. "You don't want to do this, Knox."
Knox titled his head. "Oh, but I do."
Before Volt could respond, Knox shot forward, his speed leaving a shockwave in his wake. Volt barely dodged in time, disappearing in a streak of lightning. He reappeared several meters away, his body crackling with energy.
"You're faster than last time," Volt admitted, his tone grudgingly impressed.
"I've been training," Knox replied.
Volt dashed forward, aiming a flurry of rapid punches at Knox. Each strike was a blur of motion, too fast for ordinary eyes to follow. But Knox wasn't ordinary. He parried the blows with ease, his movements precise and unyielding.
Volt's frustration grew, and he unleashed a burst of electricity, the bolt arcing toward Knox. Knox raised his hand, absorbing the energy into his body and redirecting it back toward Volt. The speedster dodged again, but the effort left him winded.
"Is that all you've got?" Knox taunted.
Volt didn't answer, instead pushing his speed to its limit. He became a blur of motion, circling Knox as impossible speeds. The wind whipped around them, creating a vortex of electricity. Knox stood at the center, calm and unmoving, his eyes tracking Volt's movements.
Kaelina's voice chimed in his mind. "Now. End it."
Knox moved, faster than Volt could react. He caught the speedster mid-stride, his hand closing around Volt's throat. Volt struggled, his hands clawing at Knox's grip, but it was no use.
"Faster doesn't mean stronger," Knox said coldly.
With a sickening snap, Knox ended Volt's struggles. He stopped the lifeless body to the ground and turned, his gaze scanning the empty streets.
Knox stood over Volt's lifeless body, the faint hum of residual electricity still crackling in the air. He rolled his shoulders, letting out a sigh. "So much for the fastest man alive," he muttered, his voice laced with mockery.
The sky darkened suddenly, and the air grew heavy, Knox turned his head toward the horizon, sending the arrival of something—no, someone.
A brilliant beam of golden light struck the ground a few dozen meters away, the impact shaking the street. The light faded, revealing Seraph, her divine wings ablaze with incandescent fury.
But she wasn't alone.
Behind her, nine figures stepped forward, their presences as overwhelming as a tidal wave. They found a line, each radiating a distinct and formidable energy. Their eyes locked onto Knox, and then to Volt's crumpled form, lifeless and still.
The rage and grief in Seraph's expression mirrored the storm brewing within the group.
Knox titled his head, taking them all in. A smirk curled at his lips. "The cavalry's here."
Titan: A towering giant, his physique impossibly massive. Each step he took sent tremors through the ground, his steel-like muscles glinting in the dim light. His square jaw and cold, unwavering gaze exuded brute strength.
Cryo: Draped in shimmering frost-covered armor, Cryo's presence was a sharp chill that seeped into the bones. Ice crystals formed on the pavement around him with every step, and his gloved hands were encased in a misty blue aura.
Inferno: A living embodiment of fire, Inferno was a walking inferno of heat and destruction. Flames wreathed his body, flicking and dancing with raw energy. His fiery eyes locked onto Knox, burning with unrelenting intensity.
Phantom: A shadow that barely clung to the world, Phantom's form shifted and flickered, making it impossible to pin him down. He seemed to glide across the ground rather than walk, his presence unsettling and otherworldly.
Echo: A tall, lean woman with short-cropped hair and piercing green eyes, Echo's movements were deliberate and composed. The faint vibrations in the air around her hinted at her power: sound so potent it could shatter mountains.
Warden: Imposing in his stance, Warden's armor gleamed with a constantly shifting, semi-transparent energy shield that covered his entire body. His crossed arms and unwavering gaze conveyed an unyielding resolve.
Tempest: Hovering slightly off the ground, Tempest was wreathed in a swirling vortex of wind and lighting. Her sharp, storm-gray eyes and defiant smirk gave her an air of reckless confidence.
Vanguard: Leading the group was Vanguard, clad in gleaming, indestructible armor that seemed to absorb the faint light around it. His posture was commanding, this piercing blue eyes fixed on Knox with deadly focus. He radiated authority, a true leader among the heroes.
The silence that followed was deafening. They all stood, staring at Volt's broken body. Seraph's fists clenched to tightly that her knuckles turned white. A soft glow pulsed from her wings, growing brighter and brighter as her rage became palpable.
"You killed him," she said, her voice trembling with restrained fury.
Knox gave her an pathetic shrug. "He was in my way."
Inferno's flames flared violently. "You're going to regret that," he growled, his voice low and dangerous.
Cryo's breath was visible in the frigid air surrounding him as he took a step forward. "You've gone too far this time, Knox."
Echo's voice cut through the tension, carrying an unnerving resonance. "Do you have any idea what's coming for you?"
Knox titled his head, amused by their indignation. "Oh, I'm counting on it."
Titan's voice rumbled like an earthquake. "You won't leave here alive."
Knox's smirk widened as he met their collective glare. The sheer power radiating from the group was enough to intimidate anyone else. But for Knox, it was exhilarating.
Kaelina's voice echoed in his mind. "Leave now, Knox. You've proven your strength. Their combined power is more than even you can handle... for now."
Knox's gaze lingered on Seraph, her tear-filled eyes filled with grief and hatred. Then he turned to the others, his smirk never faltering.
"You should've brought more," he said, his voice dripping with mockery.
Before they could respond, he shot into the sky, a blur of motion that left a sonic boom in his wake.
"Tempest!" Vanguard barked.
She didn't need further instruction. The winds roared as she propelled herself into the air, lightning crackling around her. She chased after Knox, her speed formidable, but no match for his.
Knox glanced back, his smirk turning into a laugh as he accelerated, leaving Tempest behind in the swirling storm.
She screamed in frustration, her voice lost to the roaring wind as Knox disappeared into the horizon.
