Chapter 6: THE SHADOW RETURNS
KING'S CHAMBER
Sunlight streams through the ornate windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. KING JOHN, his face etched with lines of wisdom and contentment, sits on the throne, a rare smile gracing his lips.
JOHN(
To himself)
Incredible. To think…
It's been… how many years? Ten? Perhaps more.
He gestures towards the bustling city below, a vibrant tapestry of life and prosperity. Markets overflow with goods, laughter fills the air, and children play in the cobbled streets.
JOHN
(Whispering)
To think we've come so far.
It had been years since the people had chosen him as their King. Years filled with hard work, with wise decisions, with a relentless focus on improving the lives of his people. He had fulfilled every promise he had made, revitalizing the economy, fostering trade, and ensuring justice for all.
He surveys the kingdom, his gaze sweeping across the verdant fields, the bustling marketplace, the laughter of children playing in the park. The kingdom, once on the brink of ruin, had blossomed. Prosperity had returned, and the people, once plagued by poverty and despair, now lived in comfort and happiness.
FLASHBACK
TOWN SQUARE
The air is thick with the scent of roasted meats and sweet wine. Music fills the air, a joyous cacophony of sounds. The people dance, their faces illuminated by the flickering flames of bonfires.
YOUNG MAN
(Singing)
We all hail our King, whose a true king, a people's star!
We all hail our King, who's a good king, shining afar!
He's the most beloved King of this kingdom, a shining star!
We love him so much, we greet him with pleasure, like a shooting star!
The crowd roars in approval, their voices echoing through the night.
KING'S CHAMBER
A gentle knock interrupts John's reverie.
JOHN
(Smiling)
Enter.
The door creaks open, revealing the POSTAL MAN, a man with a weathered face and a weary smile.
POSTAL MAN
Your Majesty, a letter for you.
JOHN
(Taking the letter)
Thank you.
JOHN
(Examining the letter)
No return address?
POSTAL MAN
(Shrugging)
No, Your Majesty. It came from… well, nowhere. I found it in the post box, no markings, no sender.
JOHN
(Intrigued)
Hmm… that's odd.
POSTAL MAN
(Bowing)
I shall take my leave, Your Majesty.
JOHN
(Nodding)
Yes, go. And… see the CSO before you leave and thank you.
POSTAL MAN
(Leaving)
Of course, Your Majesty.
The Postman exits, leaving John alone with the mysterious letter. John stares at the letter, a sense of unease creeping over him. Who could have sent a letter with no return address? And why?
KING'S CHAMBER
The CSO, MARKUS, enters the chamber, a wide grin on his face.
MARKUS
Your Majesty, congratulations! I hear the harvest festival was a resounding success.
JOHN
(Smiling)
Thank you, Markus. It was indeed a joyous occasion.
Markus's smile falters as he notices the letter resting on the King's desk.
MARKUS
(Concerned)
Your Majesty, you seem troubled.
JOHN
(Sighing)
I received a strange letter. No sender, no return address.
MARKUS
(Intrigued)
That's peculiar. Perhaps it's a… a hoax.
JOHN
(Shaking his head)
I don't think so. There's something… unsettling about it. It feels… ominous.
MARKUS
(Suggesting)
Why don't you open it, Your Majesty? Perhaps it contains a clue.
JOHN
(Nodding)
You're right.
He carefully opens the letter and unfolds the delicate parchment. The handwriting is elegant, yet chillingly familiar. He reads the message, his brow furrowing with each passing word.
JOHN
(Reading aloud)
"Oh King John Peter, the heart of the people, the mastermind of my dethroning and sending my family away. I hope you know who wrote this letter to you ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
MARKUS
(Leaning closer)
What does it say, Your Majesty?
John Peter stares at the letter, his face a mask of disbelief.
JOHN
(Voice trembling)
"I want you to be prepared for a surprise gift that will visit you very soon. You may think you can defeat me with the powers in your kingdom but it is nothing compared to what I have but if you still don't know who's talking I will remind you. I am the twenty-first ruler of MEVIDAL KINGDOM. It's me, Harry Austin, the one you and your people know as…
…BLACK WOLF.
I love that name now and am coming back to take control of what you and your subordinate snatched from me. I hope you are ready to face war with the new great and mighty BLACK WOLF ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…"
The letter ends abruptly, leaving John Peter shaken to the core as the letter drops from John's hand. He stares at the parchment, his face a mask of shock and disbelief.
JOHN
(Whispering)
Black Wolf…
The memory of the exiled King, his reign of terror, the fear that had gripped the kingdom… it all comes flooding back.
MARKUS
(Staring at the letter)
Your Majesty…Harry Austin? But… he was thought to be dead!
John Peter raises his head, his eyes gleaming with a cold, steely determination.
The shadow of the Black Wolf, once a distant memory, now looms large over the kingdom, threatening to shatter the peace and prosperity that John Peter had worked so hard to build.
JOHN
(Voice low and dangerous)
He's back. And he's coming for me.
THIS IS WAR.
