Chapter 12: Switching Sides
The earth spirit stirred, striving to regain consciousness. She rose in her human form, astonished to find herself clad only in her undergarments. She had underestimated the demigod's formidable power, and he was well aware of the risks involved. As she prepared to flee the scene, a colossal winged figure materialized from the swirling smoke. Its face remained obscured in darkness, but its imposing body radiated an ominous aura. Enormous and shrouded in feathers, it unfurled its wings with a powerful sweep, brandishing tendrils that writhed like serpents in the air.
The earth spirit, caught off guard by the sudden attack, attempted to crawl away as the tendrils closed in on her. Desperation fueled her movements as she reached for her trusty katana, determined to fight back. With a swift motion, she severed the tendril ensnaring her foot, freeing herself momentarily. However, before she could fully escape, another tendril snaked towards her, ensnaring her in a vice-like grip.
The earth spirit's heart raced as she struggled against the powerful force constricting her. She could feel the tendrils tightening around her, threatening to crush her. Fear flashed in the earth spirit's eyes, wide and glistening, as she realized the peril she was in. Before she could let out a scream, the creature ascended into the sky, carrying her away. Her scream echoed through the cave, reverberating off the stone walls and startling Buck, who had just vanquished the Silver Wolf. He quickly pulled the sword out of the wolf's chest, the blade slick with dark blood, and rushed outside to see what was happening.
Buck dashed outside and beheld her being abducted into the air, her cries muffled. The creature that bore her resembled a gigantic eagle, cloaked in mist. Sensing the potent mana emanating from the entity, Buck recognized it as a powerful spirit. He refrained from engaging with it, knowing he needed to revive Lin and pursue the Vampire Lord.
*************
The Water Spirit, taking on a male form, materialized out of a single drop of water, landing behind the Vampire Lord with a grace that belied his watery nature. Despite his silent approach, the Vampire Lord's keen senses detected his presence. With a mixture of disdain and recognition, the Vampire Lord addressed him by his ancient name, "Aquarius," his voice dripping with contempt. "What do you want now, you wet abomination?" he sneered, his arrogance evident in every word.
Aquarius stood tall, the currents of the lake swirling around him, reflecting the intensity of the moment. "Why do you disturb the balance of our realms?" he demanded, his voice steady yet resonating with the power of the tides. "Your thirst for blood threatens the harmony we have maintained for centuries."
The Water Spirit spat in disgust and declared, "You cannot bribe me as you did my brothers! I cannot be bought by power. I fight for balance; without that, you are all doomed. Do not make a powerful enemy of me, you bloodthirsty fiend, or I will drown you in unfathomable depths!" He advanced toward the Vampire Lord, who smirked and replied, "Is that so?"
As he spoke, a monstrous creature, a twisted amalgamation of shadows and scales, landed heavily nearby, its eyes glowing like embers. It dropped the Earth Spirit to the ground, and she rolled before quickly standing up, her expression fierce. The Vampire Lord locked eyes with her and shouted, "What kind of a fucking failure are you! I ask you to kill one Demigod, yet you fail miserably; you are a disgrace!"
"But Ludwig!" she began, her voice steady despite the tension. "He is too powerful, and you know that. Stop hiding behind your spirits for protection and try killing him yourself!" The Vampire Lord sneered, "Pathetic!" This angered the Earth Spirit, who withdrew her katana, poised to attack. Suddenly, the creature that had carried her here split into three women, revealing Buck's three sisters, their expressions fierce and determined. "Kill both of them!" the Vampire Lord commanded before fleeing the area at high speed, vanishing so swiftly that no one noticed his movements.
The three sisters, Nem, Mira, and Layla, rushed forward to attack the two spirits. Aquarius extracted water from the plants surrounding them, hurling hardened droplets telekinetically at the sisters, who swiftly dodged the projectiles. The earth spirit, Ivy, shook the ground beneath their feet, causing the sisters to take flight. Mid-air, Aquarius unleashed a wave that knocked them back down, drenching them in the process. The ground transformed into a fluid-like substance, trapping the sisters.
As the spirits advanced to finish them off, the sisters employed a demigod technique that Buck had used earlier, detonating the area around them. The explosion sent both spirits tumbling backward. "Why do this? Why would you join the Vampire Lord? You are demigods and are supposed to fight for good!" Aquarius exclaimed harshly, struggling to regain his footing. "When we fight, we fight to win! It doesn't matter the side; we strive to be on the winning team," Layla replied defiantly before lunging forward to unleash another series of attacks.
Aquarius sprouted water tentacles from his back, stretching them forward to strike at the sisters. The three sisters responded with agility, countering the swift tentacles. Meanwhile, Ivy attempted to transform back into her battle form, but her efforts proved futile. One of the sisters drew a bow and shot three arrows at Ivy, who was desperately trying to absorb enough earth to transform. The arrows struck her left cheek, leaving a slight gash. She faltered, but with a swift strike of her katana, she severed the second arrow. Nem fired multiple arrows, but Ivy cut through them with ease. Before she realized it, she had run out of arrows, and Ivy was close enough to land a decisive blow. Ivy stabbed her in the chest and kicked her back against the wall.
Turning her attention to the remaining sisters, Ivy struck Mira, who halted her katana mid-air, grasping it by the blade and shattering it under her grip. Before Ivy could react, Mira struck her neck with her elbow, rendering her unconscious. In retaliation, the water spirit unleashed a massive wave that pushed the sisters back. With Ivy in his grasp, he vanished into the dark of night, leaving the three sisters bewildered and wondering where they had gone.
