Chapter 144
The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide
Chapter 137: End of the Exam
After moving from the training ground back to the academy, we entered the classroom where we first took the written exam, following the instructions of a nearby teacher.
“Lewis-sama.”
“Iris and Sephiria? What brings you here?”
As I sat in a chair at the corner of the classroom, gazing out the window and thinking that the nice weather was perfect for a nap, for some reason, Iris and Sephiria, whom I didn’t even know well, both came over to me.
“Sorry for the sudden intrusion. Is it alright if we sit here?”
“Ah, go ahead.”
Sephiria asked if she could take a seat in front of me, and when I gave my permission, the two of them happily sat down side by side.
“Did you two know each other?”
“Eh? No, I don’t know the Saintess. I’m meeting her for the first time here.”
“Me too, this is my first time as well.”
“Then why did you come together?”
“I came to talk to Lewis-sama, but it seems the Saintess had the same intention, and we coincidentally met here.”
It seems they truly met by chance, as Sephiria nodded in agreement with Iris.
“I see. So, what do you want from me?”
“Yes. Regarding the earlier exam, it seemed like you were slacking off, so I was curious why.”
“I was going to ask about the exam too, but from what you’re saying, it sounds like you didn’t give it your all, right?”
It turned out their purpose was to inquire about my exam performance, asking me why I didn’t put in more effort.
“I had no particular reason to give it my all.”
“A reason?”
“Yeah. I don’t particularly want to be at the top of this academy, nor do I want to push myself. I just want to enter Class S and then live freely, that’s enough for me.”
“Does that mean you have other objectives?”
“Yeah. Part of the reason I came to this academy was unavoidable, but mainly it was to meet someone. Beyond that, I’m not seeking anything from this academy. So, I appreciated that Iris stood out more than me.”
“N-no, I just worked hard… I’m glad if I could be of help, though.”
Thanks to Iris acting as a cover, I was able to finish the exam without particularly standing out.
The written exam had no issues, and I could definitely achieve Class S with the record from the magic exam.
“However, Lewis-sama, did you perhaps play around a bit too much during the magic exam?”
“What do you mean?”
Iris seemed aware that I was fooling around by hitting repeating numbers and worried it might attract the attention of a teacher.
“That’s fine as it is.”
“Why’s that?”
“Hmmm, that’s a secret. More importantly, it seems the interviews are about to start. Let’s wrap this talk up.”
Having said that, I ended our conversation, and it seemed the two understood I wasn’t going to say more, so they didn’t press further.
(Now then. Will that person be interested in me because of this?)
The one I truly wanted to meet was just one person, but if I could garner that person’s interest, it would allow me to move around more freely in the academy.
After waiting about 40 minutes, it was finally my turn for the interview, so I left the classroom and headed to the designated room.
The interview took about 15 minutes and was a boring affair where I was asked the same questions by the same examiner.
I was asked why I applied to this academy, what I wanted to do upon enrollment, and what subjects I wanted to specialize in, and then they asked about my favorite things and past experiences to know my personality.
(Sigh, this is dull. At least the practical exam let me have a bit of fun, but I can’t mess around during an interview.)
Interviews always repeat the same thing, so as someone who has experienced this multiple times, it was truly boring.
However, with all the exams now finished, and only an explanation after the exams to take care of, my steps lightened a little at the thought of finally being able to go back to the mansion and rest.
After a while back in the classroom, the interviews finally concluded, and the teacher who had overseen us during the written exam entered.
“Everyone, thank you for your hard work. With this, all the exams are over. The results will be displayed in the academy square for three days starting two weeks from now, so please come check. Take care on your way back!”
With that said, the teacher left the classroom, and the other examinees nearby also finished preparing to leave.
“EL. Let’s go home.”
As I packed my things and stood up, Fiera and the others who had finished their exams in another classroom called out to me.
“Right. I want to get home and rest.”
“Yeah. Today, I can use my tail as a pillow to sleep.”
“That’s something to look forward to.”
When I’m exhausted, Fiera’s tail has the best soothing effect, so I’m thankful I can snuggle up with it in this life.
“Lewis-sama. Are you leaving?”
“Yeah. I’ve got nothing left to do here, and I don’t have any plans afterward, so I’m going home.”
“Oh, I see.”
While I was talking with Fiera, Iris, who had also finished packing up, asked that, but Sephiria was also nearby.
“By the way, where are Sephiria and Sonia staying?”
“I’m renting a nearby inn. I don’t have any acquaintances here, and I’ve got money, so I’m not particularly troubled.”
“I’m staying at the church in the imperial capital. Since I’m technically a Saintess, if I ask, I can stay there. Of course, while I’m being hosted, I also engage in prayers and charity work.”
“I see.”
“By the way, Lewis. You knew the Saintess?”
It seems Sonia just noticed Sephiria blending in naturally and looked at me curiously.
“Yeah, there’s been a lot going on.”
“A lot? What do you mean?”
“It’s a hassle, so just ask Fiera and the others for details. More importantly, I’m tired, so I’m going home. See ya.”
With that, I turned my back on Iris and left the classroom.
After that, I reunited with Miria, who had been resting near the carriage, and rode home with Fiera and the others, who followed after separating from Sonia.
—side Headmaster—
Once Lewis and the others finished their exams and all examinees had left, the teachers quickly convened an emergency meeting to discuss the exams.
“This year’s examinees have a lot of talented kids.”
Said by the examiner who oversaw Lewis and company’s written exam, even a quick glance at the scores showed more high-scoring students than usual.
“Indeed. In the martial arts exam I oversaw, there were many who showed remarkable talent as well.”
“The same goes for the magic side. Compared to last year, this year’s examinees are clearly at a higher level.”
Agreeing, the male in charge of martial arts and Semari, in charge of magic, talked about the practical exams with slight excitement while looking at the recorded sheets.
“Particularly impressive are Iris Pestelose, Sonia Scarlet, and the elf girl Shuvina. Their magical skills and magic power are among the highest in their generation, even surpassing that of the princess who took the same exam. We definitely want to nurture them properly.”
“I was impressed by Fiera Kirishbain, a commoner boy, and the son of the House of Holstein. Fiera Kirishbain was truly amazing. The commoner youth had fine swordsmanship and seems to have some practical experience, so I look forward to him. As expected of the son of the House of Holstein, he almost lost out.”
“Hmmm. I’m keeping an eye on nearly the same set of kids. The commoner boy is just scraping by academically, but the others didn’t have issues on written tests.”
“And of course, there’s the Saintess. Her healing abilities are far superior to mine. However, she still has inconsistencies in handling magic, so that will be a challenge going forward.”
The examiners shared their opinions about Fiera and the others based on the tests they oversaw, but amidst these discussions, there was a woman staring intently at a document in the back of the meeting room.
“Headmaster, were there any examinees that caught your interest?”
“Hmm, let’s see.”
Semari asked the woman who had been observing the document, and she brushed her glossy black hair back, narrowing her beautifully dark blue eyes like the night sky as she smirked alluringly.
“I’m interested in this one.”
“This one?”
When the headmaster placed the examinee’s document on the table, Semari and the others stared at it, questioning her reason.
The document detailed a young man with a written exam score of 88, a magic exam power measurement of 1111, and a magic power of 2222.
“Headmaster. While it’s true this boy has excellent magic power and spell effectiveness, he does seem to fall a bit short compared to the previous three.”
“That’s true. His written exam scores are high compared to others, but still, they don’t quite measure up to what Selima and the others mentioned, if I may say so.”
Selima and the others were genuinely confused as to why the headmaster was interested in this examinee and responded with some hesitation.
“Indeed, at a glance, this child’s results appear inferior to those of the ones you mentioned. However, I find the scores and the recorded numbers intriguing.”
“Scores and records? While it’s rare to see numbers align this way, it doesn’t mean there’s nothing at all. Or are you suggesting that the headmaster thinks a child who hasn’t even attended the academy adjusted those numbers on purpose?”
“Who knows? That’s exactly why I find this child interesting.”
Selima and the others still looked unconvinced, but upon sensing that the headmaster wouldn’t say anything more, they began discussing whether there were any other examinees of interest.
(Hmph. It’s my first time encountering such an interesting child. I look forward to meeting you.)
The headmaster gazed out at the orange-painted sky outside the window, eagerly anticipating the day she would meet the young man whose information was in front of her, a sly smile playing on her lips.
