Chapter 37: The Defense
We rush to the defense wall and start looking for the Lieutenant who will be in-charge of the defense to join the defense against the horde of animals that is coming towards Havet.
After a minute, I see my mother coming towards me. She doesn't look surprised when I tell her we came to assist in the defense, but can see her face going into concern. But looking at my team standing behind me, she just nods and takes us to the Lieutenant in-charge of the defense.
It is a fair woman, maybe in her late 30's but she is strong with Mid-C power wearing the best Lieutenant armor the Defense Corp has. She looks ant me and the team with no expression on her face, but agrees to lets us participate when my mother vouches for me and my team.
We then follow my mother who is a leader of a squad of 10 soldiers which includes my sister too. We go to the top of the defense wall which is 50 meters tall and 5 meters thick, where I can see a wall of dust moving towards us which is currently at least 15 km away from us.
I focus on my team to see them eager to fight, but I am more concerned about them as I feel like they are going to do something stupid when the battle starts. We have gone through a few fake hunts together and know what we should do when is comes to small scale attacks, but not a battle this huge.
I try to convince myself thinking 'Focus man. They know what they have to do.' Looking at my concerned face, my sister comes close to me and taps my shoulder and says "Relax bro, this is just a swarm. We are unable to gather enough troops to defend the wall at a very short notice as most of the soldiers have gone to the nearby city for protection."
This helps me to gain a little confidence on my team to get through. She also adds with a smile "We are here to handle the swarm. You guys are here as a backup and will join us only when needed."
I am glad to know about this, but still worried as I have seen a large scale battle and know how it will affect a person. Even the battle I took part is not this big, I have seen people dying in front of me when I am unable to do anything about it. I don't want my team to go through the same.
When I am thinking of ways to get my teammates out of this battle, I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn around to find our team trainer Jack standing next to me watching the swarm of animals coming towards us.
He looks at me and says "Don't worry about the team Alex. That is why I am here for." And for a second I can sense his power level raising above the High-D which I initially thought he is in. I sense his power reaching Mid-C and still raising making him the strongest person in the town.
He smiles at me and says "Keep it a secret kid." which feels more like threatening instead of asking. I look at him with surprise in my eyes which I couldn't hide. I can see a few soldiers have sense it and started looking at our side.
I am not sure if my teammates who are close to me are able to sense it too as anyone can sense one's power level if they are close enough. I can sense the power level from a distance as it is an ability I received from my original Air element.
He immediately stops increasing his power and starts reducing it mumbling something which I couldn't hear. The Lieutenant immediately comes near Jack and leads him away to a secluded place. I am not sure why, but I hope it is for the best.
Now I have the biggest question I have had since the time I joined Hammerand. 'Why will a powerful person like Jack will come to this small town just to train a bunch of kids?' I understand it will be beneficial for me and my team, but Why? Why does he have to hide his power level and be a trainer to us instead of being a powerhouse which he is.
This is not the right time for these questions, so I pushed them away and tried to relax myself to face the upcoming battle against the swarm. I look at my other side to see the surprised and shocked reactions of my teammates except Snowfa. She looks at me as if I should have known Jack is not a High-D grade trainer.
To be honest, I did have my doubts on it, but didn't go through it as I got other things to worry about. Being a team leader has put a lot of pressure on me and I had to lead them from the front in anything and everything. The team expecting an answer from me, keep looking at me which makes me feel a little awkward and angry.
Angry as I am unable to give them any answer as I myself don't know it. Awkward as I can see Snowfa trying to control her laugh and failing miserably. I wish I could go to her now and smack her face to get some answers, but I can't I have to wait till the defense ends to get an answer from any of them.
I just look at her angrily and she closes her mouth with 2 hands. Sylas, who is close to me noticing me staring daggers at her, he looks at her and moves to go to her. I grab his hand and shake my head indicating this is not the time or the place. He nods back at me understanding my signal and turns towards the wilderness to watch the swarm.
I grip my hand on my uniform armor to control myself from going to Jack now to ask why this has happened. I know there is a very tiny possibility which is Snowfa. Being a only child of a big company's branch manager, I think he is able to recruit a powerhouse for her training, but why did they drag me or others into this.
