The War of Extinction

Chapter 39: The Cannon Fodder

"Seriously? Tell me you are joking." Snowfa says with a clear horror in her voice. She is yet to fight against a wild animal, but they want her to fight against a dungeon monster that is far more intelligent that them.

I just reply to her with clear and stern voice saying "Relax, you are trained to be superior to all the animals in the same grade. It will be easy for you to bulldoze them, just remember your training." The same words our trainer Jack said to me when I felt scared to face the monsters, with a little modification.

"These monsters maybe strong, intelligent and outnumber us, but remember, we know how to control our emotions in battle." I tell them in a hurry as I can see some monsters are starting to break the front lines and come towards the wall.

What we know till now is the monsters in the dungeons are not good in controlling their emotions, especially anger and will get angry faster than the wild animals in Almeya. All the meditation which I have done so far will give me a hand in this, the same goes to my team.

We all nod at each other and get back to our positions taking our weapons from our storage and holding it firmly. The curved blade I have is a single handed weapon, but if required, I can use it with both my hands too, to put extra power in my attacks which I will be needing more as the monsters from the dungeons have great vitality.

I used to hear people talk in the office that they have seen the higher grade dungeon monster's wounds healing at a visible speed giving them the capability to heal serious injuries within hours.

HORN

I hear another horn sound and the wall we are standing starts to expand like a stairs which we can use to get down to fight the monsters that are coming towards us.

Only now I am seeing the monsters that are coming towards us. They all look the same with no difference. I am shocked to see them as they are beetles. Beetles that have grown huge coming close to our knee in height.

I look at my mother who nods at me and I give my very 1st order to my team "Sylas, with me. Everyone else, stay hear until I call." And run down to face the monsters followed closely by Sylas who has started shouting "TO VICTORY".

I could see the front line is starting to withdraw the wounded soldiers strategically back to the defense wall as they are getting slaughtered there. As soon as we reach the ground Sylas finds a target of his own and runs towards it as per the plan I came up with.

Everyone of us will be fighting alone with the monsters for now and will maintain a close distance between us so in case if anyone needs helps and asks for it, others can assist. This is a common strategy used by the high grade people in large battle and was recommended to me by Jack to use in battles to improve faster and gain more experience in solo battles.

I start performing the Battle Exercise directly from 5th move and grit my teeth while I swing my sword towards the beetle that is close to me slicing it in half. I didn't activate my Ice Armor or infuse energy into my sword, still I was able to slice it.

Only 1 thought comes to my mind now. 'These are just cannon fodder.' I look at Sylas who is dancing around firing arrows at any beetle monsters he can find with smile on his face. I can see many monsters coming through the front line and towards us.

I need to stay sharp to stay alive. Thinking about it, I swing my shield to my side slamming against a beetle that tried to bite me when I was distracted. The force made the beetle to fall 2 meters away. It immediately start to come at me again trying to claw my knee.

I take a side step while swinging my sword at it's back. My attack missed the target only scratching it's back. To my surprise, the wound healed almost instantly and it comes at me with more speed.

I jump over it and piercing my sword while it passed below me killing it immediately. I use the beetle's weight as a force to stop my jump and land next to it. I can feel something is not right, but not sure what it is.

I can see 4 more beetle monsters coming close to me angrily seeing their kin getting killed by me. I start performing the Battle Exercise with full speed while infusing my sword with the Ice energy.

I use my shield to block the attack of 2 beetle monsters while I swing my sword at the 3rd and moving a little to my right to dodge the last beetle's attack. The beetle I hit got injured severely and started to lose it's balance. I check the wound to see it being covered by Ice, slowing it's healing speed.

I have to kill it before it is fully healed, so I try to dodge the attack of the 3 other beetle monsters by jumping to my right side getting close to the injured beetle. Seeing me coming close to it, it stared to move away from me.

They maybe low level cannon fodders, but they are smart enough when they see a formidable enemy. The other 3 beetle monsters also started to act smart coordinating their attacks in a way I can only defend them, but not attack without getting injured.

"Little help here." I ask Sylas who is just 10 meters away from me and an arrow pierced 1 of the beetle monster killing it instantly. This released the pressure on me and I killed the other 2 with ease. I left the 1st injured beetle to the last to check it's vitality and it wasn't fast enough to heal it completely.

I signaled the rest of my team on top of the wall to come down before I killed the last beetle as this will be a good experience and warm-up for them before the real battle begins. They come down and surround us to give us some time to rest while I also tell them what I have understood so far.
