Chapter 11: Chapter 10: Preparing for War

The morning air was heavy with tension. Though the sun shone brightly, the mood in the settlement was grim. Selene's warning about the bandits had lit a fire under the group, and everyone knew they had to act quickly.

Leon gathered everyone near the Resource Depot to outline the plan.

"Selene confirmed that the bandits are mobilizing," Leon began. "We don't know if they're coming for us, but we can't afford to take chances. Today, we focus on traps, additional defenses, and preparing for a possible fight."

Selene crossed her arms, leaning against a wooden post. "They've got the numbers on us, so if they attack, we need every advantage we can get."

Mira glanced at the farming plot. "The crops won't be ready for a week. If we're under siege, we won't have enough food to hold out."

Leon nodded. "Then we'll set traps outside the settlement to slow them down. If we can control where and how they attack, we can force them into a disadvantage."

Joren raised his bow. "I'll start preparing extra arrows. If they think they're just walking through those gates, they've got another thing coming."

Trap Construction

Using the system interface, Leon selected the basic traps available under the Defensive Structures tab.

[Trap Options Unlocked]

• Spike Trap: Requires Wood (20) and Iron (5).

• Effect: Causes heavy damage to enemies that step on it.

• Pitfall Trap: Requires Wood (10) and Labor.

• Effect: Captures enemies in a concealed pit.

With their resources limited, they decided to focus on spike traps for the most vulnerable areas around the settlement.

"Selene, Joren, help me set these up," Leon said, selecting the trap locations. "We'll place them along the forest path leading here. That's the most likely route they'll take."

Selene grinned. "I like the way you think."

The group worked tirelessly, hammering stakes into the ground and camouflaging the traps with leaves and dirt. By midday, a series of deadly surprises lined the path to the settlement.

[Spike Traps Constructed: 5]

• Hostile casualties increased during enemy approach.

Weapon Preparations

While Leon and Selene worked on traps, Joren and Edric focused on improving their weaponry.

"Can the system help us craft better weapons?" Joren asked, examining the iron ore they'd brought back from the mine.

Leon accessed the Crafting menu.

[Weapon Crafting Options Unlocked]

• Iron Sword: Requires Iron (10).

• Iron Arrowheads: Requires Iron (5) per batch of 20.

• Reinforced Shield: Requires Iron (8) and Wood (12).

"We don't have enough iron for everything," Leon said, frowning. "Let's prioritize arrows and at least one sword."

Joren nodded. "I'll take the arrows. You're better with a blade anyway."

By evening, they had a batch of iron-tipped arrows and a new sword for Leon. The weapons gleamed in the fading light, a symbol of their determination.

Training for Battle

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Leon called the group together.

"We've done what we can to prepare the settlement," he said, his voice firm. "Now we need to prepare ourselves."

He led them through basic combat drills, using his knowledge from the system to guide them.

Selene's movements were fluid and deadly, her dagger flashing in the torchlight. Joren's aim was precise, each arrow finding its mark on the makeshift targets they'd set up. Even Mira and Edric, though less experienced, showed promise.

"We're not just surviving anymore," Leon said, addressing the group. "We're fighting for our future. For this settlement. For each other."

The group nodded, their expressions grim but resolute.

Nightfall

As the others rested, Leon climbed the watchtower once more. The campfires in the distance seemed closer than before, their flickering light a constant reminder of the danger looming on the horizon.

The system interface appeared before him, displaying their progress.

[Settlement Status]

• Population: 5

• Structures: 7

• Defense: Improved

• Resources: Low

• Traps: Active

Leon clenched his fist. They had done everything they could to prepare, but he couldn't shake the feeling that it might not be enough.

"They're coming," he muttered, staring at the distant fires. "But so are we."

Far below, the faint sound of Mira humming a soft tune drifted through the air. It was a small reminder of what they were fighting for—a chance to build something worth protecting.

And Leon was determined not to let it slip away.
