The world of Eryndor

Chapter 14: Chapter 13: Plans for Expansion

The morning sun broke over the settlement, casting long shadows on the freshly repaired walls. The group assembled near the Resource Depot, their faces reflecting a mix of determination and weariness. The battle was over, but their survival depended on more than just defending against attackers.

Leon stood at the center, the system interface glowing faintly before him.

"Last night, the system gave me new objectives," he began, his voice steady. "If we want this settlement to thrive, we need to expand—bring in more people, secure more resources, and establish trade with nearby territories."

Selene raised an eyebrow, leaning against a post. "More people? You do realize that means more mouths to feed, right?"

Joren nodded in agreement. "She's got a point. We're barely holding things together as it is."

Leon gestured to the repaired walls. "I understand that, but think about what we've accomplished with just the five of us. If we bring in others—skilled people—we can do even more. Builders, farmers, traders… we can grow stronger together."

Mira chimed in, her voice soft but resolute. "Leon's right. We can't stay isolated forever. And if we establish trade, we might not have to rely solely on what we can gather ourselves."

Selene sighed, her lips curling into a faint smirk. "Fine. But don't expect me to play nice with every stranger that comes through here."

Leon chuckled. "Noted. First, let's discuss how we're going to find these people and resources."

Scouting New Territories

Leon opened the system map, which displayed the area surrounding the settlement.

[System Map Updated]

• Explored Areas: Settlement (center), Forest (east), Iron Mine (north).

• Unexplored Areas: River Valley (south), Mountain Pass (west).

"We've already scouted the forest and the iron mine," Leon said, pointing to the map. "But the river valley to the south could be a good place to find food and water, and the mountain pass might have valuable minerals or even other settlements."

Selene crossed her arms. "The river valley is closer. We should start there. But if we're leaving the settlement, someone needs to stay behind to guard it."

Leon nodded. "Agreed. Selene and I will scout the river valley. Joren, you'll stay here with Mira and Edric to fortify the settlement and keep an eye on things."

Joren saluted with a grin. "You got it, boss."

Preparing for the Journey

Leon and Selene packed light for the expedition, bringing only essential supplies: food, water, rope, and their weapons. Before leaving, Leon checked the system inventory to see if there were any upgrades or tools that could aid them.

[Item Unlocked: Portable Beacon]

• Requires: Wood (10), Iron (5).

• Effect: Marks an area for rapid return via system teleportation (limited range).

"Looks like we can craft something useful," Leon said, crafting the beacon. "If we run into trouble, we can use this to get back quickly."

Selene examined the small device, impressed despite herself. "You and this system of yours… one of these days, you'll have to tell me how it works."

Leon smirked. "Maybe one day."

The Journey to the River Valley

The path southward was uneven but manageable. As they moved deeper into the valley, the air grew cooler, and the sound of rushing water reached their ears.

Selene stopped abruptly, her sharp eyes scanning the underbrush. "Hold up. Something's not right."

Leon froze, activating the system's Enhanced Perception skill. The world around him seemed to slow slightly as he focused on the movement ahead.

[Detected: Wild Boars]

• Threat Level: Low to Moderate.

• Group Size: 3

"Wild boars," Leon whispered. "Three of them, just ahead."

Selene grinned, drawing her dagger. "Think they'll make good dinner?"

"Only if we're careful," Leon replied, unsheathing his sword.

The Boar Encounter

The boars charged as soon as they spotted the pair, their tusks gleaming in the sunlight. Leon stepped forward, his sword flashing as he struck the lead boar.

[Combat Assistance Activated: Precision Strike]

The system guided his movements, allowing him to dodge the boar's tusks and land a critical blow.

Selene was a blur of motion, sidestepping one of the smaller boars and plunging her dagger into its neck. The creature let out a final squeal before collapsing.

The last boar hesitated, realizing its companions were dead. It snorted angrily before turning and disappearing into the trees.

Leon wiped his blade clean, breathing heavily. "That went better than expected."

Selene crouched beside the slain boars, inspecting them. "We should take the meat back with us. No point in wasting it."

"Agreed," Leon said, opening the system inventory to store the carcasses.

Discovering the River

As they continued south, the forest opened up into a wide valley. A crystal-clear river wound its way through the landscape, its banks lined with lush greenery.

Selene whistled low. "Now this is a find."

Leon accessed the system, which highlighted several resource nodes near the river.

[Resources Discovered]

• Freshwater Source

• Herbs (Medicinal)

• Fishing Spot

"This place could be a game changer," Leon said, marking the area on the map. "If we can secure it, we'll have a steady supply of water and food."

Selene nodded. "The question is, can we keep it? A spot like this won't stay unnoticed for long."

Leon's expression hardened. "Then we make sure we're the ones who control it."

Returning to the Settlement

As night fell, Leon and Selene made their way back to the settlement. The portable beacon allowed them to teleport directly to the gates, saving them hours of travel.

The group gathered in the common area as Leon and Selene recounted what they'd found.

"A river with clean water and plenty of resources," Leon said. "If we can establish an outpost there, it'll strengthen our position significantly."

Mira's eyes lit up. "That sounds incredible! We could set up a farm nearby, maybe even a fishing spot."

Joren grinned. "Looks like the hard work's just getting started."

Leon nodded. "Tomorrow, we plan the next step. For now, get some rest. We've got a lot to build."

As the others dispersed, Leon climbed the watchtower once more, gazing out at the darkened landscape. The river valley was a promising discovery, but it was only one piece of the puzzle.

[New Objective: Establish a Secondary Outpost]

• Requirements: Wood (50), Stone (30), Labor.

• Rewards: Increased resource production and territorial control.

Leon's resolve deepened as he stared at the glowing system interface. The path ahead was challenging, but he knew they could succeed if they worked together.

This was no longer just a settlement—it was the foundation of something far greater.
