Chapter 17: Chapter 16: Welcoming New Allies
The sun was high in the sky as Leon, Selene, Mira, and the new recruits approached the settlement. The atmosphere was different—lighter, filled with the hope of new beginnings.
Garrick, the burly villager who had acted as Oakridge's leader, walked beside Leon. His wary eyes scanned the settlement as they passed the gates. Behind him were the other recruits: Elara, a quiet and focused healer; Fenrick and Myra, builders with years of experience; and Doran, a farmer with a practical mindset.
"This is it?" Garrick asked, his tone skeptical but not dismissive.
Leon nodded. "It's small now, but it's secure and growing. With your help, we can make it something much greater."
Introducing the Recruits
Joren greeted them with his usual smirk. "Brought back a whole crew this time, huh? Not bad."
"This is Garrick," Leon said, gesturing toward the burly man. "He's the one who vouched for us in Oakridge. The others have skills we'll need: Elara is a healer, Fenrick and Myra are builders, and Doran is a farmer."
Selene crossed her arms, studying the newcomers. "Hope they're ready to work. We don't have room for dead weight."
Elara stepped forward, her calm voice steady. "We're here because we believe in what you're building. Just tell us where we're needed."
Leon nodded. "We'll show you around, assign quarters, and get you started on tasks right away. There's a lot to do."
Assigning Roles
Leon used the system interface to integrate the new recruits into the settlement.
[New Settlement Members Added: Garrick, Elara, Fenrick, Myra, Doran]
• Current Population: 11
• Specialized Skills Detected:
• Garrick: Combat, Leadership
• Elara: Healing, Herbology
• Fenrick: Structural Engineering
• Myra: Carpentry
• Doran: Agriculture
The system highlighted suggestions for their roles.
• Garrick: Training militia and overseeing defenses.
• Elara: Setting up a basic infirmary and gathering medicinal herbs.
• Fenrick and Myra: Expanding housing and building a workshop.
• Doran: Preparing farmland and managing food resources.
Leon quickly relayed the assignments, ensuring everyone knew their responsibilities.
Expanding the Settlement
Fenrick and Myra wasted no time, inspecting the existing buildings and gathering materials to begin construction.
"This place has potential," Fenrick remarked as he sketched a blueprint for new housing. "But we'll need more stone and wood to make it sturdy."
Joren and Mira volunteered to gather resources, while Garrick and Selene worked on fortifying the defenses. Garrick, despite his gruff demeanor, quickly proved himself as a capable leader.
"You need to reinforce the watchtower here," Garrick instructed, pointing to a weak point in the structure. "If someone attacks, this spot won't hold."
Selene raised an eyebrow. "You know your stuff."
"Years of dealing with raids," Garrick replied. "You learn fast or you don't survive."
The Healer's Touch
Meanwhile, Elara set up a temporary infirmary using one of the unused huts. She organized her tools and began collecting herbs from the nearby forest with Leon's guidance.
"Your system mentioned medicinal herbs," Elara said as they walked. "Do you know what they look like?"
Leon activated the Botanical Scanner from the system, a new feature unlocked after recruiting Elara.
[Medicinal Herb Detected: Yarrow]
• Properties: Accelerates healing, reduces infection risk.
Leon pointed to a patch of small white flowers. "That's yarrow. The system says it's good for healing."
Elara knelt to harvest the herbs, her movements practiced and careful. "With these, I can make salves and poultices. They'll be invaluable for treating injuries."
Preparing Farmland
Doran, the farmer, examined the soil near the settlement with a critical eye.
"It's not the best," he muttered, "but it's workable. I'll need compost and plenty of water to make it fertile."
Leon consulted the system again, which provided instructions for creating a compost pit.
[New Building Unlocked: Compost Pit]
• Materials Required: Wood (15), Stone (5).
• Effect: Improves soil fertility for farming.
With Fenrick and Myra's help, the compost pit was built by evening. Doran immediately set to work, layering organic material to start the composting process.
The First Night Together
As the day wound down, the group gathered around a fire to share a meal. The atmosphere was warm, a stark contrast to the tense survivalist vibe from earlier days.
"This place feels… hopeful," Mira said, breaking the silence. "Like we're actually building something real."
Garrick nodded. "I've seen a lot of places fall apart. This one's different. You've got a vision, Leon, and people willing to follow it."
Leon looked around at the group, his chest swelling with pride. "This is just the beginning. With all of us working together, we'll create something that can stand the test of time."
System Update
That night, as Leon lay in his quarters, the system activated with a chime.
[System Update: Settlement Milestone Achieved]
• Population: 10+
• Key Roles Filled: Leadership, Healing, Building, Farming.
• New Features Unlocked:
• Trade Network: Establish trade routes with other settlements.
• Advanced Defenses: Upgrade existing defenses for greater protection.
Leon sat up, excitement coursing through him. The path forward was becoming clearer, and the tools to achieve their goals were now within reach.
Tomorrow, they would begin building not just a settlement, but the foundations of a kingdom.
