The world of Eryndor

Chapter 5: Chapter 4: The Foundation Expands

The sun rose over Vryndor, its pale light casting long shadows across the fledgling settlement. Leon stood outside their shelter, the system interface glowing faintly before his eyes. The events of the previous day had cemented one thing in his mind: survival wasn't enough. They needed to grow.

[Current Objectives]

1. Build a Resource Depot.

2. Recruit Citizens: 2/5.

3. Defend the Settlement.

Selene emerged from the shelter, stretching. "You've been up all night again, haven't you?"

Leon glanced at her, offering a small smile. "There's too much to do. The system keeps giving me new objectives. Right now, it's pushing for a Resource Depot."

Selene looked at the empty patch of land where their campfire smoldered faintly. "Makes sense. We're not exactly equipped to store supplies. What do you need for it?"

Leon flicked through the system's construction menu, the blueprint for the depot glowing faintly.

[Resource Depot Blueprint]

• Materials Required:

• Wood: 150

• Stone: 75

• Effects: Increases resource storage and efficiency.

"We need more wood and stone," Leon said. "A lot more."

Selene smirked. "Then it's a good thing we've got an extra pair of hands now."

Joren appeared moments later, looking much better after a night of rest. His posture was still hesitant, but there was a flicker of determination in his eyes.

"What's the plan, my lord?" he asked, the title still awkward on his tongue.

Leon wasn't used to it either, but he decided to let it slide. "We're gathering resources to build a Resource Depot. Selene, you'll handle stone. Joren, you're with me on wood."

Joren nodded quickly. "Understood."

The morning was filled with the steady rhythm of work. Leon and Joren hacked at the sparse trees surrounding the settlement, their crude tools splintering bark and carving through branches.

Joren wiped his brow, glancing at Leon. "How did you end up here? In a place like this, I mean."

Leon paused, leaning against his axe. "It's… complicated. Let's just say I didn't choose this. But now that I'm here, I intend to make the most of it."

Joren nodded slowly, his expression thoughtful. "I've never seen anyone like you. Most people would've turned me away—or killed me outright. But you gave me a chance."

Leon smiled faintly. "Everyone deserves a second chance. Just don't waste it."

By midday, they had gathered enough wood and stone to begin construction. Leon selected the depot's blueprint from the system menu, and a glowing outline appeared near the shelter.

Selene and Joren worked alongside Leon, piling the materials into the outlined area. As before, the system took over once everything was in place. The wood and stone moved on their own, assembling into walls, beams, and a sturdy roof.

When the process was complete, the Resource Depot stood before them, a modest but functional building.

[Resource Depot Constructed]

[Settlement Efficiency Increased by 20%]

"Not bad," Selene said, inspecting the structure. "At least now we won't have to leave supplies lying around."

Leon opened the system interface, checking their progress.

[Current Objectives]

• Recruit Citizens: 2/5.

"Recruitment is next," he said. "We need more people if we're going to make this place self-sustaining."

Selene crossed her arms. "And where exactly do you plan to find them? It's not like there's a line of people waiting to join."

Leon hesitated. That was a problem he hadn't solved yet. The system had been vague about recruitment, simply listing it as an ongoing objective.

As if on cue, a soft chime echoed in his mind.

[New Quest: Wandering Souls]

• Objective: Locate and recruit two wanderers.

• Hint: Some lost souls may be closer than you think.

• Reward: 300 XP, New Citizen Skills Unlocked.

Leon followed the system's directions, leading Selene and Joren toward a dry riverbed just outside the settlement. The landscape was harsh and unwelcoming, but the system's glowing markers guided him forward.

"Do you even know where we're going?" Selene asked, her tone skeptical.

Leon nodded. "The system says there are people nearby. I'm trusting it."

Joren glanced around nervously. "Let's hope they're friendlier than the last group we ran into."

As they rounded a bend in the riverbed, they spotted two figures huddled beneath a rocky overhang. Both looked up as Leon and his group approached.

One was a middle-aged man with a gaunt face and ragged clothes. The other was a young woman, her eyes sharp and wary despite her frail appearance.

"Who are you?" the man asked, his voice hoarse.

Leon raised his hands in a gesture of peace. "We're not here to hurt you. My name is Leon, and we're building a settlement nearby. If you're willing to work and contribute, we can offer you food, shelter, and safety."

The woman narrowed her eyes. "And why should we trust you?"

Selene stepped forward, her voice firm. "Because you don't have many other options. Look around. How long do you think you'll survive out here?"

The man hesitated, his gaze shifting between Leon and Selene. Finally, he nodded. "If what you're saying is true, we'll join you."

[New Citizens Recruited: 4/5]

Back at the settlement, Leon showed the new recruits around, explaining their responsibilities and the rules.

The woman introduced herself as Mira, a former healer who had been traveling with her father, Edric, after losing their village to raiders.

"We'll do whatever we can to help," Mira said, her voice steady. "Just tell us what you need."

Leon smiled. "Welcome to the kingdom."

The system chimed again, a new notification appearing.

[Objective Updated: Recruit Citizens: 5/5]

[Settlement Level Up: Level 2]

• New Structures Unlocked: Workshop, Barracks.

• New Features Unlocked: Basic Defense System.

Leon felt a surge of excitement. With the settlement leveling up, they were one step closer to turning this barren land into a thriving kingdom.

Selene clapped him on the back, a rare grin on her face. "Not bad, Leon. You might actually pull this off."

Leon looked out over the settlement, his mind racing with possibilities. "This is just the beginning."
