Chapter 37: Fear
The classroom was buzzing with energy as Professor Lupin strode confidently to the front, a cabinet shaking ominously behind him. The wooden structure creaked and groaned, and students exchanged nervous glances. Jason sat in the middle, arms crossed, eyes narrowing at the wardrobe like it owed him money.
Lupin: "Intriguing, isn't it? Would anyone like to venture a guess as to what is inside?"
Dean Thomas, his hand shooting up with unexpected eagerness, said, "That's a boggart, that is."
Lupin beamed. "Very good, Mr. Thomas. Now, can anyone tell me what a boggart looks like?"
Hermione, predictably, spoke up before anyone else could: "No one knows."
Ron, throwing up his hands: "When did she get here?"
Hermione: "Boggarts are shape-shifters. They take the shape of whatever a particular person fears the most. That's what makes them so—"
Lupin smoothly interjected: "So terrifying. Yes. Yes, yes, yes. Luckily, a very simple charm exists to repel a boggart. After me: Riddikulus."
The class followed in chorus, their pronunciation varying from confident to entirely garbled.
Lupin: "Very good. A little louder, and very clear. Listen. Riddikulus."
The students' voices harmonized again, though Draco Malfoy muttered loudly enough to be heard, "This class is ridiculous."
Jason : " good pun ."
Lupin grinned. "Very good." His eyes twinkled, but he moved on. "Now, so much for the easy part. The incantation alone is not enough. What really finishes a boggart is laughter. You need to force it to assume a shape you find truly amusing."
The tension in the classroom was palpable as Professor Lupin gently placed his hand on Neville's shoulder.
Lupin: "Come on, Neville. Don't be shy. Just a little bravery, and I promise, you'll be laughing in no time."
Neville shuffled to the front, his wand trembling slightly. Jason leaned forward in his seat, observing with mild curiosity. Lupin's voice remained calm and reassuring.
Lupin: "Now, picture him, Neville. But not as you normally see him. Think of your grandmother's clothes—specifically her hat. Yes, the one with the stuffed vulture. Got it?"
Neville nodded hesitantly, whispering, "And her red handbag."
Jason smirked. This should be good.
Lupin: "Perfect. Wand at the ready. One... two... three!"
The cabinet creaked open, and out stepped Professor Snape, glowering as if he were preparing to deliver a week's worth of detentions in one breath. Neville's hands shook, but he managed to mutter the incantation.
Neville: "Riddikulus!"
Instantly, Snape's dark robes were replaced by a garish, fur-lined green coat, a ridiculous bird hat perched on his greasy head, and the infamous red handbag swinging from his arm. The class erupted into howls of laughter. Even Jason couldn't hold back, his chuckle joining the cacophony.
Neville scampered to the back of the line, grinning shyly.
Lupin: "Marvelous, Neville! Wonderful! Now, let's keep the momentum going. Ron, you're up."
The class moved in a rhythm, one by one facing their fears. Ron's massive spider slid across the floor comically on roller skates, eliciting raucous laughter. Vik's dreaded failing grade transformed into a glossy magazine cover announcing, "Wiz Kid Takes World by Storm!"
And then it was Jason's turn.
Lupin: "Jason, step up. Let's see what you've got."
Jason walked to the front, his wand steady despite the prickling unease growing at the base of his neck. The boggart seemed to hesitate, as though sniffing out something deeper. The room grew unnaturally quiet, and Jason felt the hair on his arms stand on end.
Jason thought to himself, "This thing better not try anything too dramatic."
The air thickened, the smoke curling and swirling until a figure began to take shape. The boggart hesitated before revealing its final form, and when it did, the atmosphere in the room turned suffocatingly dark.
THE FOLLOWING EVENT HAD TAKEN PLACE IN ONLY ONE SECOND
Before the class stood a towering, grotesque figure. Muscles rippled under scarred skin, adorned with black, slithering tattoos. Four crimson eyes gleamed with malice, and a monstrous grin stretched across its face, revealing sharp teeth.
Sukuna: [voice dripping with disdain] "Such a pathetic charade. Embrace your nature , gaki ."
The creature's presence was overwhelming, a wave of malice radiating from it and rooting everyone in their spots. Student, normally quick with quips and chatter, were frozen. Even Lupin, who had remained composed throughout the lesson, furrowed his brow.
Jason's mind raced, but his voice remained steady.
He raised his wand, the incantation on the tip of his tongue.
Jason: [calmly] "Riddikulus."
The transformation was instant. The hulking, menacing figure twisted and warped, its terrifying visage replaced by a ridiculous clown. Its muscular arms now flailed comically, adorned with oversized gloves. Its four menacing eyes were covered by a pair of massive, goofy spectacles. The red nose honked loudly as the clown spun in place, tripping over its enormous shoes.
The oppressive atmosphere dissipated, and hesitant laughter filled the room. Jason exhaled slowly, his hand steady as he lowered his wand.
Lupin stepped forward, his face calm but his eyes sharp.
Lupin: "Excellent work, Jason. That was... unexpected. Meet me after class, would you?"
Jason nodded wordlessly, stepping back into the line. His classmates avoided his gaze, the image of the monstrous boggart still fresh in their minds.
The lesson continued, but the energy in the room felt off. Harry's turn came, and the boggart hesitated again before morphing into a dementor, its skeletal hands reaching for Harry. Lupin quickly stepped in, banishing it with a wave of his wand. The boggart turn in moon then with professor spell turn into a ballon .
Lupin: "Right, that's enough for today. Gather your books and head out. Jason, five minutes in my office."
Lupin: "Right, well, sorry about that. If you'd like to collect your books, that's the end of the lesson. Thank you! Go on now. You can have too much of a good thing."
Jason stepped into Professor Lupin's office, the warm glow of a single lantern casting soft shadows on the stone walls. The room was cozy, cluttered with books and oddities that hinted at Lupin's eclectic knowledge. Jason felt the air of understanding even before Lupin spoke, his kind demeanor disarming yet sharp.
Remus: "Take a seat, Jason."
Jason obliged, settling into a worn chair as Lupin leaned against his desk, arms crossed but his expression open.
Remus: "What happened in class today… it wasn't ordinary, was it? The boggart—it hesitated before transforming. That doesn't happen often."
Jason shifted uncomfortably, his eyes darting briefly to a spinning contraption on the desk.
Jason: "Sir, I… I don't feel comfortable sharing. It's… personal."
Lupin studied him for a moment, his gaze soft but probing. He nodded slowly, straightening up.
Remus: "That's fair, Jason. We all have our fears, some deeper and darker than we'd like to admit. And sometimes, sharing them feels like giving someone else a piece of ourselves we're not ready to part with."
Jason met Lupin's eyes, his teacher's words striking a chord.
Remus: "Believe me, I understand. Fear… it's a tricky thing. It whispers to us in ways no one else hears, and we worry how others will react if they knew."
Jason: "Yeah… exactly that."
Lupin's lips curled into a faint smile, his voice softening further.
Remus: "Well, know this—whatever it was, it doesn't define you. And it certainly doesn't make you less in my eyes or anyone else's. You handled it brilliantly, Jason. If ever you need someone to talk to, you'll find my door open."
Jason nodded, his posture easing slightly.
Jason: "Thank you, sir. That means a lot."
Remus: "Alright then. Off you go. And try not to let it weigh on you too much. You've proven today that you're more than capable of facing what scares you most."
Jason rose, the tension in his shoulders easing as he headed for the door. Just as he opened it, Lupin's voice called out.
Remus: "Oh, and Jason?"
Jason paused, glancing back.
Remus: "The next time you outshine a Defense professor in front of a class, do warn me first. Gives me time to save face."
Jason chuckled softly, a small grin breaking across his face.
Jason: "I'll keep that in mind, sir."
Jason (to himself ) : " Professor lupin really is kind ".
