Chapter 1: Desert
"I was just playing a game on a $300 computer. Did it have to go this far?" A person looked at the sky with tears streaming down their face. Just a few minutes ago, she had been sitting in front of her computer playing a game.
In the blink of an eye, her exploding computer had transported her to this place. That was bad enough, but the real kicker was that she had turned into her in-game character, Yatogami Tohka. What a cliché, melodramatic plot twist.
Staring helplessly at her curvaceous figure, intricate armor, and long, silky hair, she dropped to her knees in an "ORZ" pose.
"Phew." Just then, a cold wind blew past, snapping her back to reality.
"Where am I? Wait, why aren't those mecha girls chasing me?"
At this point, Tohka finally realized she was in a desert, where the extreme daytime heat was rivaled only by the bone-chilling cold of the night.
However, with her Spirit physique, Tohka had long surpassed human limits and could easily ignore these harsh conditions.
What puzzled her, however, was that she hadn't been attacked by those mecha girls. Even more strangely, her arrival hadn't caused any spatial disturbances. The area around her showed no signs of destruction, and she even spotted a small lizard crawling over a nearby sand dune.
"Where exactly is this? Why isn't there a single person around?" Standing atop a sand dune and looking in all directions, Tohka realized she was in the middle of a desert, surrounded by nothing but desolation.
"Whatever, I'll just figure it out as I go." She patted the large sword in her hand, casually stowed it away, and chose a random direction to stride toward.
As expected, her intelligence seemed to have dropped after becoming a girl. Did she seriously forget that Spirits could fly?
"Water, food, a bed. Where on earth am I? The Sahara? Lop Nur? Or somewhere else entirely? There's not a soul around—hello?" An exasperated Tohka had been walking for an entire night. Thanks to her exceptional stamina, she was still full of energy, even loudly yelling in frustration.
However, her former human instincts still left her craving food and water.
"Finally, people! I'm coming!" At last, beneath a cliff, our unlucky protagonist spotted traces of humanity. With her far superior eyesight, she saw a few people repairing a vehicle.
Excited, Tohka didn't think twice before dashing over on her own two legs.
"Excuse me, do you have any food or water? I'm lost."
"..."
The group was visibly startled by Tohka's sudden appearance, especially by her armor, which clearly didn't belong to this era.
They exchanged glances and then, without hesitation, pulled out rifles from behind them and opened fire on Tohka.
"What the heck, are these terrorists?" Seeing the hail of bullets raining down on her, Tohka instinctively activated a protective barrier. The countless bullets landed on the shield, creating ripples, but left no signs of damage.
"Are you done yet? Do you really think I'm that easy to bully?"
"******"
Ignoring Tohka's words, the group, realizing their weapons weren't working, immediately grabbed their radios and began shouting into them. Tohka noticed that, even though she had never heard this language before, she could understand it perfectly.
Their conversation piqued Tohka's interest, but it also gave her an ominous feeling.
"Calling in! We're under attack. Our weapons can't take her down. She seems to be here to rescue Tony Stark. Requesting immediate firepower support!"
"Tony Stark? That name sounds familiar… Wait, isn't that Iron Man?"
Thinking of this, Tohka glanced at the nearby cliff. Sure enough, a crowd of people was pouring out of a cave entrance below.
"Damn it, I'll save him first. He's a rich guy, after all. If I want to live in this world, I'll probably need his help since identity is a big issue."
With her mind made up, Tohka didn't hesitate. She accelerated and disappeared from the group's sight, charging boldly toward the cave entrance.
As various weapons fired at her, Tohka didn't even bother to think about dodging; these things weren't capable of hurting her anyway.
However, once inside the cave, she was slightly stumped—she had no idea which way to go.
"Whatever. Since this is a kidnapping, I'll just head toward the area with the most guards."
After quickly surveying her surroundings, Tohka charged toward an area with visibly tight security.
As for anyone in her way, she simply knocked them aside. Having been an ordinary person in her previous life, she still instinctively avoided killing.
But not killing didn't mean the terrorists had it easy. Anyone she knocked aside ended up with several broken bones. Wherever Tohka passed, the ground was littered with groaning bodies.
"Hmm, this should be the place." After a rampage through the facility, Tohka finally came upon a thick, heavy iron door.
As for what was behind the door, she could guess easily. After all, her path was already marked by the groaning, bone-broken terrorists lying in heaps behind her.
Tohka raised her small hand slightly, summoning a massive sword. With a light swing, she shattered the iron door before her.
"Wait! I'm here to save you!" The moment she entered, Tohka saw two people grabbing weapons and preparing to fight for their lives.
Standing in front were Dr. Yinsen, armed and on high alert, and Tony Stark, fumbling to put on his unfinished armor.
But when the two heard Tohka's voice and saw her in person, they froze in shock.
The girl before them was stunningly beautiful, even by Western standards. Her luxurious armor and the massive sword in her hand only added to her aura of strength, one that rivaled any man's.
However, her attire clearly didn't belong to this era!
The two men stared at Tohka, and she observed them in return. At this moment, Tony Stark was far from the charming and confident figure seen in later movies. Instead, he looked utterly disheveled.
Not only were his clothes filthy, but his chest bore a peculiar device. Tohka recognized it; without it, Tony wouldn't be far from death.
As for Dr. Yinsen, Tohka dismissed him outright. He was the kind of character who wouldn't last a few minutes after appearing, but with her here, perhaps he wouldn't die this time.
"Uh, I'm here to save you." Seeing the confused expressions on their faces, Tohka realized she had spoken in Mandarin earlier. They didn't understand her, so she repeated herself in English.
Thank goodness for the perks of crossing worlds—her English skills had been boosted to the max.
