Chapter 103: please don't blame yourself

Spending time with him helped soothe the pain I had been feeling since Mikey told me to stay away. It hurts even now but being here with Kakucho felt as though being healed was possible. I didn't even have to worry about him being in the gang.

He isn't part of the Tokyo Manji Gang. I haven't broken my promise, Mikey.

After a few moments of silence after having talked well into the next morning, he seemed hesitant to ask a question. I knew what he wanted to know.

I can trust him…right?

Kakucho waited patiently for an opening, before I began telling him what happened.

He's going to think it's ridiculous to hold onto something that causes me so much pain…but I can't let go…

"Mikey told me to stop…'sluttin around his gang'. He told me he could have anyone, so he didn't need me. I think, at the time, I hoped he was lying. Even still, that was the last thing he ever said to me, and those words have overshadowed everything else I've ever been told. A lie can have a shred of truth in it, so.."

"No!" I jumped at his sudden exclamation, facing him and flinching at the serious look written on his face. "That was a lie more than any I've ever heard before and I never want to hear differently from you."

Anger riddled his features as he tried to think of what to say before sighing in defeat. "This is my fault. If I had tried to find you back then, you wouldn't have been hurting all this time alone."

He's blaming himself? But it isn't his fault!

Before I could get the chance to correct him, his phone suddenly buzzed in his pocket. I felt the air around us change as his face showed a darkness I wasn't used to just from glancing at whatever message he had received. He quickly changed his expression back, smiling at me as he pulled me into a warm embrace.

Kakucho made it a point to tell me he would visit me again as soon as he could but said he wouldn't be able to give me a phone number to reach him. When he said this, he began speaking apologies as he watched my facial expressions. I smiled with understanding, leaning forward to lay my forehead against his shoulder, hoping to push not only his fears away, but mine as well.

"It's okay, Kaku. Just don't forget me, okay?" I happily hugged him back but was surprised when I felt a kiss on my cheek. I stared at him wide eyed and speechless as he left.

I pressed a hand to the cheek he kissed with a soft smile.
