Chapter 118 - Tian Shui Market
Currently, the place where the cultivators from various regions are gathering for exchange and communication is Tian Shui Market, located by the sea. Originally, this area was a dangerous but resource-rich location, which attracted many lone cultivators and those out on trials. As a result, Tian Shui Market developed into a bustling place, where people frequently gathered.
Due to the attacks by sea beasts, the flow of people in Tian Shui Market has surged. There are those exchanging goods, taking a break, and merchants seizing business opportunities. The market is filled with people from all over. Because of its popularity, the sea beasts, recognizing it as a tough target, have refrained from directly attacking for the time being.
On the way to Tian Shui Market, Gu Yao felt some movement in his spirit beast pouch. It was the kitten that had been sleeping for a long time, now awake. Gu Yao quickly released it, fearing that the spirit beast pouch might not withstand its antics.
It had slept for a full year. Gu Yao had grown a bit accustomed to it being around, and its sudden absence had left him feeling a bit strange. Both Gu Yao and Chi Changye had speculated that the reason it had been in slumber was that it was working on digesting something it had swallowed. As for what that was, they tacitly avoided mentioning it.
“This little thing finally woke up?” Chi Changye looked over when he heard the noise and reached out to pick up the kitten. He looked it over, “I don’t see any changes. It’s still as small as ever.”
“Meow meow meow!” The kitten, not expecting such treatment upon waking, angrily swiped at Chi Changye with its paw.
Gu Yao quickly snatched it away, giving Chi Changye a light slap on the hand in retaliation for the kitten, which then shot Chi Changye a triumphant look. The kitten then cuddled up to Gu Yao’s hand, mewing. In Gu Yao’s mind, he heard a soft, tender voice calling out, “Eat, eat, hungry, want to eat!”
Gu Yao was both surprised and pleased. The voice was unmistakably the kitten’s. It was the first time he had heard it, and he quickly took out some spiritual fruit, rice balls, and dried meat from his storage pouch. The kitten let out a happy “aowu” and eagerly dove into the food, stuffing its head into the middle of the spiritual fruit rice ball. Despite its small size, it devoured the entire rice ball in one bite without even seeming to get full.
“Ah, the kitten woke up!” When Tian Feirong heard the noise, he also noticed the kitten and happily approached. He pulled out some of the dried food and spiritual fruits he had with him. He had missed this little thing during the year without it and felt something was missing, which had made him feel somewhat unaccustomed.
At first, Tian Feiyang didn’t pay much attention to the kitten. It looked like a pet for play, something that Gu Yao kept around for companionship. With someone like Chi Changye by his side, Gu Yao didn’t need a powerful spirit pet. Many female cultivators liked to raise spirit pets that were cute and appealing in appearance. Tian Feiyang unconsciously grouped Gu Yao into this category.
However, when he saw the kitten devouring an entire pile of food without any noticeable change in its small belly, and then taking a pill bottle that Gu Yao had brought out, beginning to consume the pills one by one, Tian Feiyang’s expression couldn’t help but stiffen. This spirit beast was definitely not an ordinary one. If it were another pet, it would have already exploded from overeating.
Looking at the pills, the spiritual energy was so abundant that it was obvious they were high-grade pills, with a quality that was certainly at least of superior grade. This little creature was treating them like candy, consuming them one after another without worrying about digestion. Tian Feiyang couldn’t help but feel jealous.
This spirit beast wasn’t something just anyone could afford to raise. How many spirit stones would it take to consume an entire bottle of these pills? A normal cultivator would have gone bankrupt just trying to keep up.
However, Tian Feirong was so happy to see his elder brother that he began talking about the kitten’s mischievousness. After eating and drinking to its fill, the kitten merely gave Tian Feiyang a lazy, disdainful glance, which made him laugh. He also realized that this little kitten had an extremely high level of intelligence.
It wasn’t long before they arrived at Tian Shui Market, named with the meaning of a connection to the sea. Gu Yao didn’t want to attract too much attention, so he only notified Brother Jiang and the others, as he needed to meet up with them. However, he couldn’t stop the disciples of Tianhai Sect who had followed with Tian Feiyang from taking action. Therefore, as soon as they landed at the entrance of Tian Shui Market, they saw people already waiting there.
Other cultivators entering and exiting were curious as well. Why were so many cultivators gathered at the entrance? Who were they waiting for?
There were cultivators from Tianfu Academy, Tianhai Sect, and even cultivators from the Lord’s Mansion of Shifang City in the crowd. This lineup was clearly there to receive some important figure.
This time, Tianfu Academy gained quite a reputation thanks to Jiang Yan and his group. They displayed impressive combat abilities while fending off the sea beasts, going in and out of the beast hordes, inflicting severe casualties on the enemy. This caught the attention of other cultivators who had previously thought of Tianfu Academy as a dumping ground for low-level cultivators with abundant spirit stones but no real skills. However, after this event, they realized they had underestimated the academy. Tianfu Academy was indeed capable of cultivating skilled fighters.
Those who knew of Jiang Yan, Lu Qiusheng, and the others weren’t as surprised. After all, Tianfu Academy had stood strong in the Tianlin Continent for many years. Although the academy accepted cultivators with mediocre qualifications, it could still produce capable individuals. With further training, these individuals could be just as good as inner sect disciples of other sects.
Lu Qiusheng, who was being observed by many, didn’t mind at all. What concerned him was one thing: “Senior Brother, what are the people from the Lord’s Mansion doing here? What’s their connection with Junior Brother Gu?”
Lu Qiusheng had always had a poor opinion of the Lord’s Mansion of Shifang City, a feeling that was instinctively shared by warriors who often charged into battle.
Jiang Yan sighed and said, “It’s probably due to some leaked news from Tianhai Sect. The disciples from Tianhai Sect probably had no choice. After Elder He from the Lord’s Mansion of Shifang City arrived, Tianhai Sect, the local sect, will have to give way.”
After all, the Lord’s Mansion of Shifang City had a very high status on Tianlin Continent. For cultivators on Tianlin Continent, the real threat came from the Changxian Sect behind the Lord’s Mansion. The Changxian Sect could easily send out a Golden Core cultivator, and there were likely even higher-level cultivators within their ranks. The cultivators on Tianlin Continent had no courage to act rashly.
“Hmph, old fool!” Lu Qiusheng snorted coldly, though he knew to control his voice. He transmitted his words to Jiang Yan through divine sense, so only Jiang Yan could hear. Jiang Yan helplessly rubbed Lu Qiusheng’s head.
“Brother Chi and the others are here!”
Jiang Yan’s words immediately brought Lu Qiusheng’s attention back. He looked up and indeed saw Gu Yao and his group. He quickly ran toward them, waving his hand. “Junior Brother Gu, you’re finally here! I thought you were going to settle down in Tianhai Sect!”
As he ran closer, Gu Yao punched him lightly. “Didn’t we agree that I’d come over once I was done? It’s pretty lively here.”
A quick scan revealed the difference from other places. Many people, who had been fighting the sea beasts for an extended period, carried the aura of slaughter and blood. Of course, there were also those who looked clean, clearly not involved in any battles.
The little chubby boy’s eyes were sharper now, indicating that he had participated in many battles in the past few days. He was very happy to see Gu Yao and Tian Feirong, and was also surprised to see the kitten. He pulled out a few inner cores taken from sea beasts. The kitten, who had no sense of courtesy, swiped its little paw and took them all.
The other two groups arrived shortly after. Tian Feiyang naturally recognized his own people, but he was a bit surprised to see Elder He from the Lord’s Mansion personally greeting them. He was somewhat worried about Gu Yao but could only suppress his concern for now and greeted the elders from the other sects.
When Lu Qiusheng called out to “Junior Brother Gu,” some of the surrounding cultivators quickly guessed his identity.
“Could that be Gu Yao, the alchemist who came with Jiang Yan from Tianfu Academy? I heard they encountered a beast horde attacking a town on their way here and even saved several people there. Isn’t he supposed to be in Tianhai Sect? Why is he here at Tian Shui Market?”
“Is it really him? Are you sure? He looks so young. Has he only been cultivating for a few years, and his alchemy skills are already this impressive? Is the talk outside not exaggerated?”
“I heard that as soon as he joined Tianhai Sect, he was busy making pills for them. I admire him for his sense of righteousness. I’ve also heard that the disciples of Tianhai Sect went crazy with joy because almost all the pills Gu Yao made for them were of high quality, and in large quantities. If it weren’t for this beast horde, the disciples of Tianhai Sect might never have had the chance to get such good pills.”
The buzz of conversation filled the air. Not only did many cultivators believe the rumors about Gu Yao’s reputation, but the news of his arrival in Tian Shui Market spread quickly.
Many cultivators were eager to find a good alchemist to help them refine pills. However, it was harder to find one here than elsewhere because few alchemists were willing to come to the frontlines of the beast horde. The pills sold by the merchants here were much more expensive than usual, but people still bought them. After all, supply was far smaller than demand. So, they decided to seize any opportunity to make connections with Gu Yao.
Many others regretted not having gotten close to Tianfu Academy’s people sooner. Had they known Gu Yao would come to Tian Shui Market, they would have made sure to build good relationships with them instead of just watching from the sidelines, thinking that Tianfu Academy’s people would fail miserably and perhaps lose their lives in the beast horde. They never expected them to make a name for themselves instead. Now, before they could decide whether to approach, Gu Yao had already arrived.
Even Elder He from the Lord’s Mansion had gone over, so it seemed that getting close to Gu Yao would not be easy.
“You’re Gu Yao, the alchemist from Tianfu Academy? This is Elder He from the Lord’s Mansion of Shifang City. Please, follow us to the place where we’ve arranged accommodations at the Lord’s Mansion,” said a young female cultivator standing beside Elder He, lifting her chin and speaking to Gu Yao.
Gu Yao looked at Jiang Yan in confusion and asked, “Senior Brother, are you saying you’re staying at the Lord’s Mansion?”
Lu Qiusheng, who was originally displeased, had been irritated by the idea that the people from the Lord’s Mansion were interfering with where Gu Yao should stay. But hearing Gu Yao ask this question, he almost burst out laughing. Jiang Yan, with a smile in his eyes, replied, “Not at all. In the name of Tianfu Academy, we’ve rented a separate courtyard. Gu Yao, are you staying with us?”
“Of course. I’m a member of Tianfu Academy. How could I stay separately from you? I’m not someone who needs special treatment,” Gu Yao said in a tone that made it sound entirely natural.
“No!” The young female cultivator was completely caught off guard by this response. Wasn’t Gu Yao supposed to be honored by the Lord’s Mansion’s invitation? What was this unexpected turn of events? “Wait, Alchemist Gu, I hope you’ll reconsider carefully. Our Lord’s Mansion hopes that you can accept the coordination from the Mansion, and assist the cultivators participating in the resistance against the beast horde.”
