Unseen Depths of Love

Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Shadows of the Past

Flashback: Three Years Ago

Hanna had a life-altering accident that left her with severe injuries and long-term memory loss. She couldn't remember her childhood, and her family decided to keep the truth from her. They feared the trauma might be too much for her to bear.

"Don't be shocked, but Hanna had a car accident three years ago," my mom said hesitantly. "She lost her long-term memory. She doesn't know you anymore."

"What? No! That's impossible. Say you're joking, Mom!" I pleaded, my voice trembling.

"Hanna's mom and I agreed not to tell you right away," she explained, her guilt evident.

"What kind of agreement? Agreement that I have no right to see her? Is that it?"

"That's not it," she said, trying to calm me. "Hanna's mom was scared about how you'd react. You've had health issues, son, and we didn't want to risk upsetting you. I'm sorry for hiding it."

Her words left me in shock. My mom and Hanna's mom had been close friends since my childhood, and now I realized she had kept this secret from me for three years.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" I demanded.

"I didn't want to hurt you," she whispered.

"But I know now, and it hurts even more!" I yelled, tears welling up in my eyes. "How could you?"

"I'm sorry," she repeated, her voice breaking.

I stormed off to my room, the weight of the truth crashing down on me. That night, I cried until dawn, unable to sleep. The girl who had always comforted me during my worst moments had needed me all along, and I hadn't even known.

"Am I a terrible friend?" I whispered to myself. "How didn't I see it sooner?"

A New Day...

Despite my sleepless night, I dragged myself to school. My mom's scolding echoed in my ears as I got ready.

"Good morning, Tristan!" Hanna greeted me cheerfully outside my house.

"Why are you here?" I asked, trying to mask my surprise.

"Obviously, I'm waiting for you. Let's go to school together," she said with a smile.

"Alright," I replied, my tone neutral.

I wanted so badly to ask if she remembered anything about her childhood or me, but something held me back.

"Uh... Can I ask you something?" I finally managed to say.

"I'll go first!" she interrupted eagerly.

"Okay?"

"Do you know James from Section Daisy?"

"Yeah, what about him?"

"I... I like him," she said shyly.

"Oh... I see" The word escaped me before I could hide my disappointment.

"He's tall, smart, and athletic."

"Oh... I see," I replied, my voice colder than I intended.

"What were you going to ask?"

"Nothing. Never mind," I muttered.

The school bell rang, cutting our conversation short.

"Let's go now; the bell is ringing."

I don't know what I've been feeling that time-is this jealousy?. No way we're friends only... But why him?

As the days passed, Hanna's attention shifted entirely to James. During breaks, I'd catch her staring into his classroom.

"What are you looking at?" I asked her.

"James," she admitted, a dreamy smile on her face.

"Why?"

"He's cute," she said.

"Cute? No way. He's totally not," I muttered, more to myself than to her.

Her crush on James changed everything. We used to be inseparable, but now she barely had time for me.

One Month Later...

I saw Hanna at a restaurant with James. Were they... dating? The sight stung more than I wanted to admit. I turned and walked away, my heart heavy with emotions I couldn't name.

Why him? I kept asking myself that question. Even as I tried to sleep that night, the thought wouldn't leave me. I realized then that I still had feelings for Hanna. But it was too late—she was with someone else.

New day has come..

"Good morning," Hanna greeted me the next day.

"Why are you here?" I asked, my walls already up.

"What kind of question is that? Of course, I'm here to walk to school with you."

"But you have a boyfriend now," I said bluntly. "I don't want to be the reason for any problems between you two."

"What? Tristan, are you mad at me? We're still friends, right?"

"Hanna, let's keep some distance. You have James now, and I don't want him questioning our friendship."

"But you're only my friend and I think he didn't mis-interpret it," she protested, her voice breaking.

"And that's why I respect your relationship. But I'm a guy, Hanna, not just another one of your girlfriends."

"Okay," she said softly. "If that's your decision, I'll respect it. But I hope this doesn't mean the end of our friendship."

"Of course not. I'll always be here for you," I reassured her. "But right now, you should focus on your relationship with James. I hope you understand."

The innate me want to cry that time. I hope this is a nightmare only and I want to wake up!.
