Chapter 2: Sow What?
Kieran Vale woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside his window—a rare luxury in the heart of the city. For once, it wasn't the blaring of his old alarm clock dragging him out of bed. He stretched, his muscles sore from another night on his sagging mattress. The events of the previous evening came rushing back, and he bolted upright, rubbing his eyes as if clearing the fog of disbelief.
The Urban Farmer System.
His gaze darted to the pot on the counter, its soil dark and damp from the seed he'd planted. Next to it, the Beginner's Gardening Kit gleamed under the faint morning light streaming through his single window. It looked out of place amidst the clutter of old takeout containers and piled-up laundry. Was it all real? Or had he finally snapped from playing too much Verdant Valley Chronicles?
The system answered his silent question. A translucent interface sprang to life in front of him, floating mid-air like a hologram ripped from a sci-fi movie. The words blinked insistently:
Task Reminder: Harvest your first crop. Reward: Tier 1 Skill Unlock.
Kieran waved his hand through the display. Solid as ever. He groaned, flopping back onto his bed.
"Harvest my first crop? It's been less than twelve hours," he muttered. "What is this, farming on steroids?"
The system didn't respond to his sarcasm, but the blinking reminder didn't let up either. He rolled out of bed and shuffled toward the pot, eyes narrowing at the soil. No sprouts yet. Maybe the system was glitching, or maybe he just had the slowest "fast-growing lettuce" in history.
Grabbing the instructions from the seed packet, he skimmed through them again. The description didn't change:
Fast-Growing Lettuce: Ready to harvest in 24 hours. Perfect for beginners!
Kieran scratched his head, shooting the pot an accusatory glare. "You'd better pull yourself together, buddy. I'm not missing out on that skill unlock because you're taking your sweet time."
He rummaged through the Beginner's Gardening Kit, pulling out the shiny trowel and pruning shears. Holding them felt oddly satisfying, like a gamer equipping a legendary weapon before a raid. He even found gloves that actually fit his hands.
"Alright, world's slowest lettuce," he said, wagging a finger at the pot. "Let's hope you're just a late bloomer."
The rest of the morning dragged by. Kieran tried to distract himself by tidying his apartment, a task he'd neglected for weeks. He piled old pizza boxes into a trash bag, washed a mountain of dishes, and even found a pair of socks he thought he'd lost forever. Still, his eyes kept darting to the pot, willing the soil to sprout.
When afternoon rolled around, his patience wore thin. He plopped onto the couch and brought up the system menu. The floating interface hummed to life, revealing tabs labeled Daily Tasks, Skills, Inventory, Market, and Upgrades.
His curiosity got the better of him, and he clicked on Market. Rows of items appeared, each with a glowing price tag attached:
Basic Fertilizer: 5 System Points
Advanced Soil Mix: 20 System Points
Kieran's jaw dropped as he scrolled through the list. Automated sprinklers, exotic seeds, even a weather manipulation device—this system wasn't just advanced; it was like something out of a farming tycoon's wildest dreams.
"Small Greenhouse Blueprint," he muttered, tapping the item for more details. The description promised a controlled growing environment with automated climate control. The price tag of 100 System Points felt like a slap in the face.
"Guess I'll have to stick to my ghetto storage-bin garden for now," he said, shooting a glance at the lettuce pot. "But one day, you'll be surrounded by glass and glory."
He closed the Market tab and opened Skills instead. A sprawling tree of abilities appeared, most of them locked and grayed out:
Basic Gardening (Unlocked)
Urban Composting (Locked)
Accelerated Growth (Locked)
Weather Prediction (Locked)
The descriptions ranged from practical to downright magical. Kieran hovered over Accelerated Growth, which promised to reduce crop growth time by 50%. His imagination ran wild, picturing a rooftop garden bursting with greenery overnight.
"Level one, Kieran," he reminded himself. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves."
By evening, his phone buzzed with the alarm he'd set to water the crops. Grateful for the distraction, Kieran grabbed the spray bottle and gave the soil a light misting. The system pinged:
Daily Task Complete. 5 System Points earned.
The notification brought a grin to his face. Five points weren't much, but they were a start. He clicked open the Inventory tab, where the points glowed faintly in the corner. A new message blinked at him:
Congratulations! Tier 1 Skill Unlocked: Basic Gardening.
He tapped on the notification, and a warm sensation spread through his chest. It was subtle, like a caffeine buzz without the jitters. The description for Basic Gardening updated:
Basic Gardening: Increases crop growth rate by 10% and improves the yield of beginner-level plants.
"Well, look at me," Kieran said, striking a mock hero pose. "Kieran Vale, certified lettuce whisperer."
The next morning, he woke up with more energy than usual. He rushed to the pot, barely stopping to put on pants. His breath caught as he leaned in. Tiny green shoots poked through the soil, their tender leaves unfolding like miniature miracles. It had been less than 24 hours, but the system's influence was undeniable.
"You little overachievers," Kieran said, grinning. "Guess that Basic Gardening boost is already paying off."
The interface pinged:
Task Reminder: Harvest your first crop.
Kieran grabbed the trowel and gloves, his hands practically itching to dig in. He knelt by the pot and carefully loosened the soil around the delicate shoots. The lettuce leaves were small but vibrant, their crisp green color practically glowing under the sunlight streaming through the window.
As he gently pulled the first plant free, the system chimed:
Task Complete! Reward: Tier 1 Skill Unlock.
Another notification popped up:
New Skill Unlocked: Urban Composting.
Kieran opened the description:
Urban Composting: Convert organic waste into high-quality fertilizer. Reduces soil depletion and increases crop yield.
His mind raced with possibilities. Composting meant he could recycle food scraps and cut down on expenses. Plus, it was eco-friendly—a win-win.
"I'm gonna need a bigger bin," he said, glancing at his cluttered balcony. Ideas for expansion filled his head. He could repurpose old containers, build vertical planters, and maybe even rig up a makeshift irrigation system.
For the first time in months, Kieran felt truly excited about the future. This wasn't just about growing lettuce or unlocking skills. It was about rebuilding his life, one sprout at a time.
