Chapter 11: Chapter 11: The Forgotten City
The air was thick with tension as the Guardians traveled through the ancient forest leading to the Forgotten City. A dark, foreboding atmosphere hung around them, the thick canopy above blocking out most of the sunlight. Every step they took echoed in the eerie silence, amplifying the unease creeping into their minds.
"We’re getting close," Emily said, her voice barely above a whisper as she led the group through the overgrown path. She could feel the presence of something ancient and powerful nearby—the energy of the Seal of Eternity calling out to her.
Mia glanced at her, clutching her staff a little tighter. "I don’t like this place. It feels like the ground itself is watching us."
Lucas, always trying to lighten the mood, chuckled nervously. "I think we’re past the point of spooky forests being a surprise. But yeah, I agree. This place gives me the creeps."
As they continued deeper into the forest, the path widened, revealing the entrance to the Forgotten City. It was as magnificent as it was haunting. The ruins of towering buildings loomed in the distance, their once-great structures now crumbling, covered in vines and moss. The stone streets, now cracked and weathered by time, stretched before them like the skeleton of a forgotten world.
"Looks like no one’s been here in centuries," Jake muttered, gazing up at the decaying statues of long-lost Guardians that lined the entrance.
"Let’s hope it stays that way," Alex replied, his hand instinctively gripping the hilt of his sword. "We don’t know what’s waiting for us inside."
---
**The Seal's Energy**
As they entered the heart of the city, Emily could feel the pull of the Seal growing stronger. It was like a beacon, calling to her from the depths of the ruins. Every step brought them closer, but with it came an increasing sense of dread.
"The Seal is near," Emily said, her voice steady despite the rising tension. "I can feel it."
The Guardians approached what appeared to be an ancient temple at the center of the city. It was grand yet decayed, with large stone pillars, faded inscriptions, and a massive door that stood partially ajar. The energy radiating from within was unmistakable—this was where the Seal was hidden.
"Inside there," Emily confirmed, pointing to the temple entrance.
Mia frowned, eyeing the temple with suspicion. "This seems too easy. No traps? No guards? Something’s off."
Lucas nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it’s way too quiet for comfort."
"I don’t care what’s waiting for us in there," Alex said firmly. "We have a mission. Let’s get that Seal before anything decides to show up."
---
**The Guardian of the Seal**
The Guardians stepped inside the temple, their footsteps echoing off the cold stone walls. The deeper they ventured, the more the air grew heavy with ancient magic. The Seal’s energy was so overwhelming now that it made Emily’s heart race in her chest.
At the center of the temple stood a massive stone pedestal, and upon it rested the Seal of Eternity—an intricately carved, glowing disk of pure energy. Its brilliance illuminated the dark chamber, casting eerie shadows on the walls.
"There it is," Jake said, his voice filled with awe. "The Seal."
Before anyone could move, a deep rumbling sound filled the air, shaking the ground beneath their feet. A chilling, guttural growl echoed through the temple, and from the shadows emerged a towering figure cloaked in darkness.
A Guardian.
Or at least, what was left of one.
The figure was wrapped in tattered robes, its once-golden armor now rusted and broken. Its eyes glowed with a sinister red light, and its face was twisted in agony, as though it had been consumed by the very magic it was meant to protect.
"It’s the Guardian of the Seal," Emily whispered, recognizing the ancient magic surrounding the figure. "But something’s wrong… it’s been corrupted."
The creature let out another bone-chilling growl, drawing a massive sword as it stepped toward them, its movements slow but deliberate.
"Looks like it’s not going to let us take the Seal without a fight," Alex said, readying his weapon.
"Be careful!" Emily warned, feeling the dark magic coursing through the Guardian. "This isn’t just an enemy—it’s bound to the Seal. We need to break the corruption before we can claim it."
---
**A Desperate Battle**
The corrupted Guardian lunged forward, its sword slashing through the air with deadly precision. Alex barely managed to dodge the attack, the force of the blow sending cracks through the temple floor.
Jake and Lucas moved in quickly, attacking from opposite sides to distract the creature. Their blades clashed against its armor, but the corruption that fueled the Guardian made it nearly invulnerable.
"This thing is too strong!" Lucas shouted, dodging another swing. "We’re barely making a dent!"
Emily, standing back with Mia, reached out with her magic, trying to find a way to purify the dark energy enveloping the Guardian. "I can sense the corruption… it’s tied to the Seal! If we can disrupt it, we can weaken the Guardian."
Mia nodded, focusing her own energy on the Seal. "I’ll help you, but we need more time."
"Buy us that time," Emily called out to the others, her hands glowing with the energy she was channeling toward the Seal.
"Understood!" Alex replied, throwing himself into the battle with renewed determination. He and Jake worked together to keep the Guardian at bay, their attacks becoming more coordinated as they tried to keep the creature away from Emily and Mia.
Sweat dripped down Emily’s face as she focused all her power on the Seal. She could feel the dark energy pulsing through it like a heartbeat, fighting against her magic. But she wasn’t going to give up—not when the fate of the world depended on them getting this Seal.
"Almost there," Mia whispered, her face pale from the effort of channeling her power into the purification spell.
---
**Breaking the Corruption**
Suddenly, a surge of light exploded from the Seal, bathing the entire temple in a brilliant glow. The dark energy surrounding the corrupted Guardian began to waver, its once-powerful form now trembling as the corruption weakened.
"Now!" Emily shouted. "Attack it while it’s vulnerable!"
With a final, powerful swing, Alex and Jake struck the Guardian at the same time, their weapons cutting through the dark magic that had bound it. The creature let out a final, echoing roar before collapsing to the ground, its body disintegrating into dust.
The Seal, now free of corruption, glowed brightly on the pedestal.
"We did it," Lucas said, breathing heavily as he looked around the now-silent temple.
Emily approached the Seal cautiously, reaching out to touch it. The moment her hand made contact, a surge of warmth filled her, the power of the Seal flowing into her very soul.
"The first Seal," she said softly. "One down… three more to go."
---
With the first Seal of Eternity in their possession, the Guardians knew their journey was far from over. The path ahead would be even more dangerous, but with the Voidborn threat looming ever closer, they had no choice but to press on.
The fate of the world depended on it.
