Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Gathering the Pieces
The morning sun peeked through the clouds as the Guardians gathered once again in their hideout, the tension from last night still hanging heavily in the air. Emily stood at the center of the room, a map of the city sprawled across the table before her. Markings and notes surrounded key locations where disturbances had been reported over the past few weeks.
“We know the Harbingers are after lost souls,” she began, tapping a finger on one of the marked areas. “But we need to figure out where they’ll perform this ritual. There has to be a central location that ties everything together.”
Jake, standing across from her, folded his arms. “What about the old cathedral on the outskirts of the city? It’s been abandoned for decades, and there have been rumors of strange activity around that area.”
Mia shook her head. “It’s too obvious. If we know about it, the Harbingers probably do too. They’ll want to stay under the radar until they’re ready to strike.”
Alex leaned in, his sharp eyes scanning the map. “What about the catacombs beneath the city? They’re ancient, and there’s a lot of dark energy down there. Perfect for a ritual of this scale.”
Emily considered it. The catacombs were dangerous, even for them, but Alex had a point. If the Harbingers were trying to perform a ritual of immense power, they’d need a place brimming with ancient, untapped energy. “It’s a possibility,” she conceded. “We’ll need to check it out.”
Lucas, who had joined them after their discovery at the library, spoke up. “If they’re planning a ritual, they’ll need a massive amount of lost souls. The amount of energy they’re looking to harness would be monumental. Are we sure they haven’t already started?”
Emily’s brow furrowed. “That’s what I’m afraid of. We might not have much time left.”
The room fell into a heavy silence as everyone absorbed the gravity of the situation. The Harbingers were dangerous enough on their own, but with the power of a completed ritual, they could plunge Verenth into an endless night.
Jake broke the silence. “So, what’s the plan? We need to move fast.”
Emily’s gaze hardened with determination. “We’ll split into two teams. Mia and Alex, you’ll investigate the catacombs. If there’s any sign of Harbinger activity, report back immediately. Jake, Lucas, and I will follow up on the leads around the cathedral, just in case. We can’t afford to leave any stone unturned.”
Mia nodded, already gearing up for the task. “We’ll be careful. But if we find anything down there, we’re going to need backup fast.”
“I’ll have a communication spell active the whole time,” Emily assured her. “Stay in contact.”
With the plan in place, the Guardians set out, each team heading in opposite directions but with the same goal in mind: find the Harbingers and stop the ritual before it was too late.

**Mia and Alex’s Perspective**
The entrance to the catacombs was hidden deep in the city’s underbelly, accessible only through a maze of narrow alleyways and forgotten tunnels. Mia and Alex moved cautiously, their senses on high alert as they descended into the darkness.
The catacombs were vast and winding, their walls lined with centuries-old carvings and forgotten relics of the past. The further they went, the colder the air became, the oppressive atmosphere pressing in on them.
“I don’t like this,” Mia whispered, her voice echoing in the narrow passage. “It feels... wrong.”
Alex’s hand hovered over the hilt of his weapon. “Stay close. If the Harbingers are down here, they’ll be expecting resistance.”
The two continued deeper into the labyrinth, the weight of the dark energy around them growing stronger with every step. Mia could feel it, a constant hum at the back of her mind, like whispers she couldn’t quite make out.
Suddenly, they heard a noise—a faint rustling from one of the side passages. Alex motioned for Mia to stop, and they crouched low, their senses heightened. The sound grew closer, and then, out of the shadows, a figure emerged.
It was a man, or at least what was left of him. His eyes were empty, his movements stiff, as though he were being controlled by some unseen force. A lost soul.
“They’ve already started,” Alex muttered, his grip tightening on his weapon.
Mia’s heart sank. If the Harbingers were already using lost souls as puppets, it meant they were closer to completing the ritual than they’d feared. “We need to find the source,” she said, her voice steely with resolve.
They moved quickly now, following the trail of dark energy that seemed to thrum through the very walls of the catacombs. The deeper they went, the stronger it became, until they finally reached a massive underground chamber.
At the center of the chamber stood an altar, surrounded by figures cloaked in darkness. The Harbingers. They were chanting in an ancient, guttural language, their voices echoing off the stone walls as they conducted the ritual.
Above the altar, a swirling vortex of dark energy hung in the air, pulsing with the stolen life force of countless lost souls.
“We’re too late,” Mia whispered, her heart pounding in her chest.
“No,” Alex growled. “We’re stopping this.”

**Emily, Jake, and Lucas’s Perspective**
Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the city, Emily, Jake, and Lucas approached the old cathedral. The once-grand structure now stood in ruins, its stone walls crumbling and overgrown with vines. The air was thick with the scent of decay, but there was something else, too—an unnatural stillness that sent a chill down Emily’s spine.
“We need to be careful,” Lucas warned, his voice low. “If this place is a decoy, there could be traps.”
Jake nodded, his eyes scanning the area for any sign of movement. “I’ll check the perimeter. See if I can find any hidden entrances.”
Emily and Lucas made their way inside, the sound of their footsteps echoing through the hollowed-out cathedral. It was eerily quiet, the silence only broken by the occasional creak of the ancient stone.
They moved toward the altar at the far end of the room, but as they drew closer, Emily’s heart sank. The place felt abandoned, devoid of any trace of dark magic. There were no signs of a ritual being prepared here.
“It’s a dead end,” she murmured, frustration gnawing at her. “We’ve been wasting time.”
But just as she turned to leave, Lucas’s hand shot out, grabbing her arm. “Wait,” he said, his voice tense. “Do you hear that?”
Emily paused, listening. At first, there was nothing, but then, faintly, she heard it—a distant rumble, like the sound of earth shifting deep beneath the ground.
“They’re not here,” Lucas said slowly. “But something’s happening underground.”
Emily’s heart raced. “The catacombs,” she breathed. “Mia and Alex are down there!”
Without another word, she sprinted out of the cathedral, Jake and Lucas close behind. They had to get to the catacombs—and fast. Time was running out.
