Chapter 18: The Forest's Trial
As the soft light of dawn filtered through the dense canopy of the forest, Mei Xue stirred from her slumber within the small campsite. The protective barrier Xuan Li had set up the night before shimmered faintly before dissipating, signaling the start of a new day. Stretching her lithe frame, she stepped out of her tent, feeling the crisp morning air on her skin.
A quick glance around the camp caused her brows to furrow. "Where is he?" she muttered, scanning every corner. There was no sign of Xuan Li. Anxiety crept into her chest. "Don't tell me..." Her gaze snapped toward the forest before her, its shadows stretching ominously. She was about to step forward when Xuan Li emerged, his figure relaxed, carrying a bundle of fresh fish and colorful fruits.
"Oh, Mei Xue, you're awake," he greeted, his usual nonchalant smile firmly in place. "Look what I found! Perfect ingredients for breakfast."
Mei Xue crossed her arms, narrowing her jade-green eyes. "Really?"
Xuan Li chuckled, setting down his findings. "What? Did you think I went into the forest to fight monsters? Come on, I'm not that reckless."
His carefree laugh did little to soothe her suspicion. She felt something was off but chose not to press further. Together, they prepared a simple meal, the aroma of grilled fish wafting through the air. The morning passed in peace, but Mei Xue couldn't shake the unease growing in her heart.
The duo set off after breakfast, venturing deeper into the forest. The terrain grew rougher, and the presence of beasts became more evident. Xuan Li and Mei Xue fought side by side, their movements synchronized despite the occasional snarl or screech of a defeated foe.
Xuan Li held back deliberately, using only a fraction of his power. He didn't fully trust Mei Xue yet, despite her calm demeanor and the bond forming between them. This forest trek served as an opportunity to assess her strengths and intentions. As they dispatched another wave of beasts, his thoughts drifted.
"Last night's battle gave me a glimpse into condensing cosmic energy," he mused. "But I'm far from mastering it. My control is still too unstable."
A sigh escaped him, drawing Mei Xue's attention. She looked over, her expression curious. "Is something bothering you?" she asked, her voice soft but probing.
Xuan Li's face hardened briefly before he turned to her with a faint smile. "Nothing. Let's move faster."
Without waiting for a response, he activated his "Flow" technique. A faint blue aura enveloped him, enhancing his agility as he surged ahead. Mei Xue, watching him with a frown, whispered to herself, "What's wrong with him? He's acting distant... more focused than usual. Something definitely happened last night, but what?"
Not one to be left behind, Mei Xue invoked her own technique. Lightning crackled around her as her thunder element boosted her speed, allowing her to keep pace with Xuan Li.
Ahead, Xuan Li pushed forward, his mind racing. "Don't get too involved, Xuan Li," he reminded himself. "Mei Xue's path is her own, and I have my goals. I need to focus—this is my battle, my journey."
By nightfall, they reached a clearing, where Xuan Li set up camp once more. Mei Xue retired early, worn from the day's trials, but Xuan Li remained restless. Once he was sure she was asleep, he ventured deeper into the forest, drawn by an unseen force.
His master, Verdris, appeared beside him, his spectral form barely visible in the moonlight. "Disciple, head in that direction," Verdris instructed, pointing toward a distant cave hidden among towering trees.
Xuan Li moved swiftly, his steps silent against the forest floor. When he reached the cave, a chilling hiss echoed through the air. From the shadows emerged a monstrous three-headed python, its body spanning over sixty feet. Its scales shimmered like steel, and a gem on the central head glowed with an ominous red light. Sparks of thunder danced around its massive jaws.
"A Tri-Headed Thunder Python," Xuan Li muttered, a chill running down his spine. "Master, you always choose opponents that feel like they could end my life."
Despite his apprehension, a grin tugged at his lips. Sweat beaded on his forehead as he stepped forward. "But this... this is exactly the kind of challenge I need."
The python's tail lashed out with blinding speed, smashing the ground where Xuan Li had stood moments earlier. Though he dodged, the tail's sheer force grazed him, leaving a thin cut on his cheek. He wiped the blood away, narrowing his eyes.
Channeling his "Flow," he enveloped himself in a brilliant blue aura, enhancing his reflexes and power. "Here I come," he declared, charging forward with his cosmic energy condensed around his fist.
The python, however, was faster than he anticipated. Its massive jaws lunged at him, forcing him to abandon his attack and dodge. Xuan Li's concentration wavered, and the cosmic energy he had condensed shattered within him, sending a sharp pain coursing through his body. Blood dripped from his mouth as he knelt, gasping for air.
"This monster... it's faster and stronger than anything I've faced," he thought grimly. "I can't afford to hold back. If I don't master my energy control now, I'll die here."
The python didn't give him time to recover, its tail smashing into him and sending him flying. He hit the ground hard, coughing up more blood. His body screamed in protest, but he forced himself to stand, his gaze locked on the beast.
"Disciple," Verdris's voice echoed from the locket, concern evident in his tone. "This battle isn't like the others. Retreat now, or you'll die. There's no shame in falling back."
"No!" Xuan Li roared, his voice shaking with defiance. "Master, have faith in me! If I retreat now, I'll never be able to call myself a warrior. I won't let this beast or anything else stand in my way!"
His words resonated with a powerful conviction, and for a moment, even Verdris was silent, a faint smile tugging at his lips.
Summoning every ounce of strength, Xuan Li charged at the python once more. The cosmic energy within him roared to life, though his battered body struggled to keep up. The python, sensing his weakened state, constricted him with its massive coils. Pain shot through his body as the pressure increased, and he heard the sickening crack of his ribs. Tears blurred his vision—not from the pain but from the frustration of his own limitations.
"Am I really going to die here?" he thought, his mind drifting. "Grandpa... Master... I'm sorry."
Verdris prepared to intervene, but just as he moved, he sensed a shift. A faint, overwhelming presence enveloped Xuan Li, one that even Verdris hadn't anticipated.
Within his mind, Xuan Li found himself standing on a vast expanse of water, reflecting the endless cosmos above. Stars shimmered around him, their light weaving into his being. His grandfather's words echoed in his heart: "Xuan Li, I believe in you. One day, you will rise so high that even I will be in awe of you."
The darkness shattered, replaced by a radiant blue aura that crackled with cosmic power. Back in the real world, Xuan Li's body mirrored his mental state. His hand stretched out instinctively, drawing in the cosmic energy around him. The energy condensed, forming a radiant blue sphere that sparkled like the night sky.
The python hesitated, its instincts warning of impending doom. It released Xuan Li, retreating slightly, but the young warrior rose unsteadily to his feet, eyes blazing with determination.
"Disappear into nothingness, you damn reptile," he muttered, hurling the condensed cosmic sphere toward the beast.
The python roared, its gem glowing fiercely as it unleashed a beam of red lightning. The two attacks collided, creating a cataclysmic explosion. The forest was illuminated by the impact, trees uprooted, and the ground torn apart. When the dust settled, a massive crater remained, with no trace of the python.
Xuan Li collapsed, his body spent. Verdris appeared, his expression a mix of pride and astonishment. "This boy... favored by the Cosmic Origin itself," he murmured. "On the brink of death, he awakened its power. What an extraordinary disciple."
As silence returned to the forest, the stars above seemed to shine a little brighter, as if bearing witness to the rise of a destined warrior.
