Vengeful Ascension: The Rise of a Demon Emperor

Chapter 60: The Bone Architect

The sun sat low in the sky when Adrian Falter and his team reached Morith Village. The journey had been long and uneventful, yet the moment they stepped into the outskirts, an unnatural stillness gripped the air. The village, once home to farmers and merchants, stood eerily silent—windows shuttered, doors ajar but unmoving, and not a single soul in sight.

Adrian led the way, his grip firm on his sword hilt. His instincts itched with unease, and his comrades felt it too.

"This place is like a ghost town," Kael muttered, his sharp eyes scanning the rooftops. His bow rested loosely in his hand, though an arrow was already nocked.

"Ghost town?" Kiera, the druid, scoffed softly as she trailed a finger along the vines crawling up a cracked stone wall. "More like something drained the life out of this place."

Seraphina, the healer, furrowed her brows as she held her staff close. Her voice was soft, but concern filled her tone. "The air here… it's suffocating. There's something very wrong."

Lucas, ever the vigilant fighter, twirled his twin blades idly as he walked beside Adrian. "Feels like a trap to me. Why send us here when there's no sign of demons?"

Adrian halted and raised a hand. The group stopped instantly, their instincts kicking in. "Stay sharp," Adrian said, his voice steady but low. "We don't move carelessly."

They spread out cautiously, checking houses, alleyways, and the perimeter of the village square.

"Not a single track," Kael said as he crouched near a patch of disturbed earth by the well. "No bodies. No blood. It's like they disappeared into thin air."

"Or something swallowed them whole," Kiera replied, her green eyes narrowed as she knelt to touch the soil. "The ground here feels… corrupted."

Adrian's jaw tightened as he scanned their surroundings. The shadows stretched unnaturally long as the sun began to set. The further they moved, the more the silence gnawed at him.

Suddenly, Seraphina gasped. "Adrian—!"

Before she could finish, the shadows rippled and writhed like liquid smoke, clawing out of the ground and solidifying into twisted, humanoid forms. The demons had no faces, just red, glowing voids where their eyes should have been. Their black claws glinted in the dim light.

"It's a trap!" Adrian shouted, raising his sword.

The demons attacked with terrifying speed, pouring from every dark corner like a flood.

"[Skyward Slash!]" Adrian yelled, unleashing a sweeping arc of aura from his blade. The attack cleaved through the front ranks, but more surged forward.

Lucas was a blur of motion, his twin blades slicing through the horde like a dancer in a deadly waltz. "They just keep coming!"

Kael fired arrow after arrow, each shot precise and lethal. "If we don't figure out where they're coming from, we're dead!"

Kiera summoned vines from the earth, wrapping around the demons and holding them in place. "Seraphina! Focus on keeping us up!"

Seraphina's staff glowed brightly. "[Sanctuary Shield!]" she cried, erecting a shimmering dome of light that blocked the demons' advance, buying the group precious moments to regroup.

But the swarm didn't stop. For every demon they felled, more poured from the shadows, their chilling screeches echoing through the empty streets.

Adrian's heart pounded as he cut down another pair of creatures. His aura flickered, the strain of the fight beginning to wear him down.

"We can't hold this line forever!" Lucas shouted, his movements slowing.

Just as the team braced for another wave, the onslaught stopped. The remaining demons froze, their heads snapping toward the edge of the village square.

The air grew colder. A deep, bone-chilling voice echoed through the silence.

"Such spirit… such defiance. How quaint."

The shadows at the edge of the square coalesced into a tall, gaunt figure. The light seemed to dim as he stepped into view—Krynos, the Bone Architect. His pale, angular features seemed carved from alabaster, and his red eyes glowed faintly beneath a black hood. The gaunt armor covering his skeletal form shifted like living bone, its surfaces etched with runes that pulsed faintly with dark energy.

Krynos spread his arms as he surveyed them, his voice mocking but unnervingly calm. "Allow me to introduce myself, humans. I am Krynos, the Bone Architect, Sixth Seat of the Lower Seven Demons. You've strayed far from safety."

Adrian stepped forward, sword ready. "If you're responsible for this, you'll pay for it."

Krynos chuckled, the sound like a death rattle. "Pay? Oh, you misunderstand. I'm merely welcoming you. After all, I orchestrated this… gathering just for you, Adrian Falter."

At the mention of his name, Adrian stiffened. "You know me?"

"Of course," Krynos said smoothly, stepping closer. The shadows seemed to ripple beneath his feet. "The human who slew Dravokh. A fascinating feat… for a mortal. But you've walked into my web, little knight."

"Adrian," Seraphina whispered, her voice trembling. "His energy… it's monstrous."

Lucas stepped to Adrian's side, his blades raised. "Doesn't matter who he is. We'll take him down."

Kael glanced at Adrian, an arrow already nocked. "What's the plan? Because this guy feels way out of our league."

Adrian's mind raced as Krynos advanced, his towering presence filling the square. "We take him together. He's strong, but we've faced worse."

Krynos's lips curled into a smile. "Together? How quaint."

The ground beneath them suddenly erupted, skeletal spikes bursting from the earth. The team scattered, narrowly avoiding the deadly assault.

"[Shadow Bind]," Krynos intoned. Dark tendrils shot from his form, snaking toward Kiera and Kael.

Kiera cried out as the shadows wrapped around her ankles, dragging her to the ground. "Adrian!"

Kael released a volley of arrows, but Krynos deflected them with a flick of his clawed hand. "Such weak resistance. Is this all humanity can offer?"

Adrian's chest tightened. He could see it—Krynos wasn't toying with them. He was testing them.

Adrian surged forward, aura flaring as he unleashed a strike aimed for Krynos's chest. "You'll regret this!"

Krynos caught the blade with his clawed gauntlet, the force of the strike barely making him flinch. "So eager to die."

With a twist of his wrist, Krynos sent Adrian flying backward, crashing into a wall. The air left his lungs as pain flared through his body.

"Adrian!" Seraphina cried, rushing to his side.

Krynos turned his gaze to the rest of the team, his expression bored. "You are insects, insignificant and weak. Did you truly think you could challenge me?"

Kael fired another desperate volley. "We're not giving up!"

Krynos sneered. "[Bone Spears]." Jagged spikes erupted from his outstretched palm, piercing through the air with lethal precision.

Kiera cried out again as the attacks overwhelmed her defenses. Kael barely managed to roll away, but the fear in his eyes was unmistakable.

Adrian pushed himself to his feet, his vision swimming. Krynos's power was overwhelming, suffocating—but he couldn't stop now.

"Get up!" Adrian shouted, his voice hoarse but defiant. "We fight, no matter what!"

Krynos's laughter echoed across the square, the shadows crawling closer like predators.
