Vengeful Ascension: The Rise of a Demon Emperor

Chapter 66: Breaking Through the Shackles

The Cavern of the Soaker hummed with a strange life of its own, its pulsating veins of crimson light seeping through the jagged rock walls like blood through fractured skin. Adrian Falter stood at its center, his breath heavy, his fists trembling as he stared at the dim glow that hinted at the world beyond the cavern's mouth.

'Freedom.'

The thought burned in his chest like an ember, both hopeful and hollow. The weight of what he had become pressed on him—pale skin, demon-marked arms, stark white hair, and the glowing red eyes that stared back at him from any reflective surface. Each reminded him of the cost of his survival.

"I'm not a demon," he muttered, trying to convince himself. His voice was raw, thick with resentment. "I'm still me."

And yet, as Adrian looked at his trembling hands—hands that had unleashed unthinkable power—he wasn't sure what he believed anymore.

In the depths of the cavern, Estrallosa leaned lazily against an ancient pillar, the fiery glow of his orange eyes casting faint shadows across his horned features. Lesser demons milled around him, their movements twitchy and agitated, like scavengers waiting for scraps.

"He paces like a caged beast," Estrallosa murmured, his voice smooth but edged with amusement.

A wiry demon hissed from the darkness, its twisted horns curled like roots. "He resists you, master. Let him go. He will fail out there, and his power will return to the earth."

Estrallosa smirked, his gaze never leaving Adrian. "No. He must learn. If Adrian wishes to break his chains, then let him try."

The demons shifted uneasily, their forms flickering like shadows. A larger demon with spiked scales rumbled, "If he runs, we'll stop him."

Estrallosa tilted his head, his smile sharp. "Not stop. Test him. If he can break free, then perhaps he is worthy of what I've given him."

Adrian couldn't stand it anymore. The cavern walls felt as though they were closing in, suffocating him in shadows and whispers. His red eyes fixed on the faint light spilling through the cavern's exit, and his resolve hardened.

'No one can hold me here.'

He began walking toward the mouth of the cavern, his footsteps echoing off the stone. He expected Estrallosa to appear, to stop him with another cryptic lesson.

"Leaving so soon?"

Adrian froze as Estrallosa's voice slithered out of the shadows. Slowly, the Ancient Draconic Demon emerged, his tall form calm and confident, like a hunter watching his prey. Around him, a half-dozen lesser demons prowled forward, their eyes glowing and teeth bared.

"You can't keep me here," Adrian growled, his voice steady but furious.

Estrallosa's lips curled into a faint smirk. "Keep you here? No, Adrian. I am merely giving you time to understand what you've become." His fiery gaze sharpened. "If you leave now, you'll be consumed—by your own ignorance, by the world, and by yourself."

Adrian took a step forward. "I'll take my chances."

Estrallosa's smile faded. "Then earn your freedom."

At his command, the demons surged forward, their roars filling the cavern.

The first demon lunged, its claws glowing with a sickly green light. Adrian moved instinctively, sidestepping the attack before driving his fist into the creature's jaw. The impact sent it sprawling across the stone floor.

Another demon—a hulking brute with spiked arms—swung a club-like fist at Adrian. Adrian ducked and retaliated with a kick to its midsection, but the creature barely flinched. It roared and swung again, grazing Adrian's shoulder and sending him staggering back.

"Is this your idea of teaching me?!" Adrian yelled, his voice raw.

Estrallosa watched, arms folded across his chest. "You call this teaching? This is mercy."

Adrian's frustration erupted into movement. He charged the demons, his fists glowing faintly as energy surged through him. "[Demon Strike]!" he shouted, releasing a shockwave that sent two of the creatures flying.

But they kept coming. A wiry demon slashed across Adrian's leg, its claws cutting deep. Another leapt onto his back, fangs sinking into his shoulder. Adrian roared in pain, grabbing the creature and slamming it into the ground.

Adrian's breaths came ragged now, his strength faltering as the swarm seemed endless. His body was bruised, his demon markings pulsing as if mocking him.

Estrallosa's voice echoed through the chaos. "Why do you hold back, Adrian? Why fight like a human when you've become something more?"

"I am human!" Adrian shouted back, even as his red eyes blazed brighter.

The largest demon charged him, its claws aimed for his heart. At that moment, something within Adrian snapped. Rage—hot, consuming, and primal—exploded through his body.

"Enough!" Adrian roared, his voice reverberating off the cavern walls. His markings ignited with dark energy, crackling like fire as he slammed his fist into the ground.

"Infernal Wave!"

The ground trembled as a shockwave of shadow erupted from Adrian, the energy tearing through the demons and slamming them into the stone walls. Dust filled the air, and the cavern fell silent.

Adrian stood at the center, his chest heaving and his body trembling from the power he had unleashed. The markings along his arms burned faintly, and his red eyes glowed like embers.

Estrallosa stepped forward, slow and deliberate, as if appraising Adrian anew. The lesser demons, battered and broken, lay scattered across the cavern.

"You see now," Estrallosa said, his voice soft but heavy. "This is what you are capable of."

Adrian's fists trembled as he glared at the Ancient Demon. "And what happens when I lose control? When I become like you?"

Estrallosa tilted his head, his fiery eyes narrowing. "That is for you to decide. Power does not corrupt, Adrian—it reveals. If you would rather run from what you've become, then leave. But the world will not welcome you."

Adrian's jaw clenched as he turned toward the exit, his steps shaky but resolute.

"I don't need the world to welcome me," Adrian said quietly. "I'll find my own way."

Estrallosa's gaze lingered on him, an unreadable expression passing across his face. "Then go. But remember this, Adrian—no matter how far you run, the truth of what you are will follow."

Adrian stepped out of the Cavern of the Soaker for the first time, the crimson sky stretching endlessly above him. The wasteland before him was barren and jagged, the air thick with an unnatural stillness. It was a harsh, unwelcoming world—one that mirrored the turmoil he carried inside.

But for the first time since waking, Adrian felt free.

His pale fingers brushed against the hilt of a crude weapon he'd fashioned within the cavern. It wasn't much, but it would do.

"I'll survive," he whispered to himself, his red eyes reflecting the blood-red horizon. "And I'll make my own choices. No one else."

He took the first step into the wasteland, the wind carrying faint echoes of his past and the uncertainty of his future.
