Vidar: The God Of Vengeance

Chapter 4: Hope

With the plan now finalized, we made our way to where Mjolnir was. When we arrived we saw a fortress with white tubes and windows centering around a circle of dirt with a hammer in the middle of it.

"Your going to need this", Thor said while taking his jacket off and giving it to Jane who was lying on the floor.

"Why?", Jane responded in between thunder.

"A storm is coming.", Thor said with a smile.

"We must hurry brother.", reminding Thor why we're here.

"Good luck.", Darcy said towards our back as we were leaving.

I waved back as we headed towards Mjolnir after Thor cut a hole into the fence.

A vehicle pulled up near us so Thor and I knocked out the men inside and took their coats. As we sneaked through the facility the alarms started blaring.

'It seems someone found their friends.'

We ran through the tunnels and with our combined prowess and my enhanced strength (even with father restricting it) we dismantled the men attacking us.

When we reached the hammer, Thor sauntered towards it and was thrown down by a large black man.

"You're big, I've fought bigger", Thor said from the floor.

I punched the man in the jaw with a red aura covering my fist and the man fell to the floor unconscious. Thor looked at me with a raised eyebrow.

"What? He was just standing there".

Thor shrugged and continued and I followed. When we were down in the mud, I saw Stykyr, my staff.

'I didn't expect our weapons to be in the same place. I expected father to make this as hard as possible'. While I was contemplating the thoughts of our father, Thor had bent down to lift Mjolnir... and failed.

"I'm sorry brother. You are worthy, you just need to prove it to father.", Thor didn't respond so I decided to see if I could pick up my own weapon.

It lifted and it fell in my hands with a comfortable grip.

'It lifted? Did father make a mistake? Or is something else at play? How could I be worthy?'

While I was contemplation father's decisions, Thor looked at me with wide eyes but before he could say anything an arrow whizzed towards us. My reflexes were so fast that I could react to lightning so the arrow was easily caught and my sights were then set on the man who had fired it. As my eyes met the mans, he had already nocked another arrow but I didn't let him fire as my aura and staff switched from red to dark blue. Stykyr extended towards the mans sniper post and demolished it.

"Shit", I heard the man curse as he fell from his position while I watched with a raised eyebrow.

I shrunk Stykyr into its normal six foot state, raised it above my head, reactivated Buster and twirled it. The staff shredded the compound. My aura changed from dark blue to a lighter shade and I picked up Thor (who was still moping about his failure to lift Mjolnir), leaving the facility faster than Thor could move without Mjolnir (before our banishment).

I appeared next to the truck.

"Holy shit!", Darcy was the first to react.

"Change of plans. Drive.", I said while Jane rushed to start driving.

As Thor and I were huddled inside the back of the truck, Darcy asked what was wrong with my brother because of his... less than stellar current appearance.

"He couldn't lift the hammer", I said in explanation to the curious woman.

"Performance issues, huh?", Darcy said with a dramatic sigh.

I smiled even though I knew I probably shouldn't.

As I turned around, I saw a sight that I thought I wouldn't see for the near future. I saw the God of Mischief, my brother, Loki.

I smiled and went for a hug while he was talking to Thor and I went straight through him.

"It's merely a projection and I have come bearing bad news brother.", Loki said as I gained a dropping feeling in my gut.

"What? What happened?", I said in panic as no one was speaking anymore.

"Father is dead". Wait. What?

"What! Who!", I said in anger.

"The banishment and the threat of a new war was simply too much for him to bear.", Loki continued in a soft tone.

"Can I come home?", Thor said in a broken voice and his head in his hands.

Loki turned back to him and said, "The truce with Jotunheim is conditional upon your exile."

"We could find a way. There has to be another way. We could- .", I pleaded as Loki interrupted me.

"Mother has forbidden your returns".

That was the final nail. I turned my head away from my brothers and ran my hair through my hair, barely listening as Loki and Thor apologized.

"My entire life up to this point has been dedicated to becoming like father, proving myself to him. I wanted to be king but I grew up knowing that you were destined to be. So, I followed you. You made the decisions and I followed. But after Jotunheim and the consequences that followed, I realized that that wasn't helpful. It didn't help you, it didn't help me, and it for Hel's sure didn't help Asgard.", I said after minutes of silence between Thor and I after Loki left.

Thor looked at me and responded in a somberly tone, "For the first time in my life, I have no idea what to do. Father was trying to teach me something and I refused to listen."

"Father said to me that I was too afraid to think for myself and he was right. I had lived blindly for so long that I refused to accept that I had eyes of my own. But I want to be better, I want to change, I want to grow, and I think we both can. To live up to what father believed we could be and to what he believed we could achieve."

Thor looked up at with an emotion that was absent after Loki left, hope. Hope that we could at least make up for what we had done to Odin.

"Thank you, brother.", Thor said with genuine gratitude gracing his tone.

I simply nodded back.

"You guys out of your hammer related slump?", Darcy asked from the front seat.

"It wasn't fully hammer related", Thor clarified.

"Glad to hear it", Jane inputted with both of her eyebrows raised.

"I thank you for asking Darcy", I told her.

"No problem! I'm like an emotional Geiger counter. Beep Beep Beep", Darcy said with incessant beeps at the end.

"Not what a Geiger counter sounds like but I will admit that's pretty funny", Jane said with a reluctant smile.

"See! I'm funny at least some of the time", Darcy said with a higher pitched voice and her arms raised in the air.

And despite ourselves, Thor and I laughed.
