Chapter 74: Training

Qrow and His Squad

The sun was setting over the middle districts of Mistral, casting long shadows across the cobblestone streets. Qrow's squad had made significant progress, rallying a modest group of freelance Huntsmen to their cause. It wasn't the large army they'd hoped for, but it was enough to bolster their efforts against Leo and his betrayal.

As the group made their way through the bustling streets, Qrow's brow furrowed in thought. He pulled out his scroll, its faint glow illuminating his face as he dialed. The call connected quickly.

Rinko, Calavera's Household

In the quiet seclusion of Maria's backyard, Rinko stood with his arms crossed, observing Ruby's training. The young Huntress was listening intently as Maria explained the fundamentals of Silver Eyes, her voice firm but encouraging. Ruby's face was a mix of determination and uncertainty as she absorbed the wisdom of the old warrior.

Nearby, Selene worked diligently, cleaning inside the house with a natural efficiency. Yang and Weiss assisted her, though Yang occasionally cast glances toward the backyard, her protective nature peeking through.

Rinko's scroll buzzed in his pocket, breaking his focus. He retrieved it, his brows lifting slightly when he saw Qrow's name on the screen. With a swipe, he connected the call.

"Qrow," Rinko greeted evenly.

"Kid," Qrow's voice came through, gruff and direct. "How's the Huntsmen hunt? Got any good news?"

Rinko hesitated, his gaze shifting back to Ruby and Maria. "No luck on Huntsmen," he admitted. "But we've gathered one ally. She's not a Huntsman, though—she's the former leader of the White Fang, Sienna Khan. She's agreed to join us and has given me her contacts. She might have valuable intel for us."

Qrow whistled low. "A former White Fang leader? That's a twist. Still, intel like hers could be a game-changer if she's got anything on Adam or their plans."

"That's what I'm hoping for," Rinko said, his tone measured but tinged with a hint of optimism.

Qrow sighed on the other end. "Well, it's better than nothing. We've managed to rally some freelancers here, but it's not a lot. We'll head back to the house soon. See you there."

Rinko's voice stopped him. "We won't be coming back right away."

Qrow's eyebrows shot up. "Why not?"

"We've found someone," Rinko explained, his voice steady. "An old Huntress named Maria Calavera. She knows about Silver Eyes and has agreed to train Ruby. If Ruby can master even a fraction of that power, it could turn the tide for us—especially against the Grimm."

There was a pause on the line before Qrow responded, his voice softer than usual. "Maria Calavera? You're serious? That's... incredible."

Rinko could hear the weight in Qrow's words. Qrow knew better than anyone the potential of Silver Eyes—he'd seen Summer use them, after all.

"She'll need this training," Qrow continued, his voice firm again. "If Maria's the real deal, don't let this chance slip away. Watch over her, Rinko. Both of them."

"That won't be a problem," Rinko replied, his voice unwavering as he ended the call.

Rinko slipped the scroll back into his pocket, his attention returning to Ruby and Maria. Maria was demonstrating a technique, her movements precise despite her age, while Ruby mirrored her as best as she could.

Yang and Weiss emerged from the house, joining Rinko on the porch.

"Was that Qrow?" Yang asked, crossing her arms.

Rinko nodded. "He's on his way back to the house with the others. He's glad Ruby's getting this training. He knows how important it is."

Weiss glanced at Ruby, her gaze softening. "Do you think she can master it in time?"

Rinko's eyes didn't leave Ruby as he replied, "She doesn't have a choice. None of us do. But if anyone can do it, it's her."

Yang smirked faintly, leaning against the railing. "She's got the stubbornness for it, that's for sure."

As the group watched Ruby continue her training, a sense of purpose settled over them. Every moment here was a step toward survival—and victory.

Qrow and His Squad

Team JNPR and Oscar gathered around Qrow, their expressions a mix of curiosity and concern. The group had been waiting anxiously for news, and Qrow's call had everyone on edge.

"So... how are they?" Jaune asked, his voice steady but tinged with worry.

Qrow leaned against the table, his posture relaxed but his tone reassuring. "They're fine. No luck finding Huntsmen, but they managed to recruit someone—a former White Fang leader, Sienna Khan."

Eyes widened at what Qrow said.

"White Fang former leader?" Pyrrha asked, tilting her head. "That's... unexpected."

"It is," Qrow admitted. "But it's something. And don't get your hopes up about seeing them anytime soon. They won't be coming back for a while."

Nora blinked mid-bite of her banana. "Wait, what? Why not?"

Qrow smirked faintly, shifting his gaze toward Pyrrha. "Because Ruby's training with someone who knows how to use her Silver Eyes."

The room fell silent for a moment, everyone processing the significance of his words. Nora broke the silence, her curiosity outweighing her confusion. "Okay, hold up. What's so special about Ruby's eyes? They're just silver... right?"

Qrow hesitated, glancing at Oscar. "It's... not exactly my story to tell."

Oscar straightened, his expression softening as Ozpin's voice gently took over. "Perhaps I can shed some light on the matter."

The air grew heavier as the weight of what was about to be explained settled on the group. Team JNPR leaned in, their full attention on Ozpin, ready to learn about the power that lay dormant within Ruby Rose.

Ozpin, speaking through Oscar, looked at Team JNPR with a measured, thoughtful expression. "The Silver Eyes are a rare and ancient gift," he began. "Few possess them, and fewer still understand their significance. Ruby Rose is one such individual blessed with this power."

Nora tilted her head, curiosity etched on her face. "So, what do they actually do? I mean, they're just eyes, right?"

Ozpin offered a faint smile. "Not just eyes, Miss Valkyrie. They are a beacon of light, a force so pure that it is capable of destroying the creatures of Grimm entirely. When properly harnessed, the power of the Silver Eyes can reduce even the most fearsome Grimm to ash, banishing them as if they had never existed."

Jaune's eyes widened. "Wait... Ruby has that kind of power? Why hasn't she used it before?"

Ozpin sighed softly. "The activation of the Silver Eyes is not as simple as wielding a weapon or casting a spell. This power is deeply tied to one's emotions—specifically, profound feelings of love, protection, and resolve. It awakens in moments of great peril or loss, often when protecting those one holds dear."

Pyrrha, who had been quiet, furrowed her brow. "But Ruby hasn't... experienced anything like that, has she? Not to the degree that would awaken such a power."

Ozpin nodded. "That is correct. The circumstances that often trigger the Silver Eyes have not occurred for Ruby. And while that may be a blessing, it also means she has not yet had the chance to tap into her full potential. This power, while immense, requires guidance, discipline, and—most importantly—understanding. It is not something that can be activated on a whim."

Nora's eyes lit up. "So, if she learns how to use it, she could just zap away all the Grimm? Like, poof!"

Ozpin chuckled softly. "In theory, yes. But the mastery of the Silver Eyes is not a simple task. It is a gift from the God of Light, designed specifically to counter the Grimm, who are creations of the God of Darkness. Such power comes with great responsibility—and risk."

Jaune frowned. "Risk? What kind of risk?"

"The strain of using the Silver Eyes is immense," Ozpin explained. "It requires a clear mind and an unyielding heart. Misuse or overexertion could lead to severe consequences—both for Ruby and those around her."

Pyrrha's gaze turned serious. "So, Ruby needs proper training to unlock this power safely. Is that why she's with someone that knows how to properly wields the silver eyes ability?"

"Yep," Qrow simply said as he took a drink from his flask.

Jaune nodded, determination in his eyes. "Then we'll do whatever it takes to support Ruby. If she can master this power, it could be a turning point in the fight against Salem."

"An admirable sentiment," Ozpin said warmly. "Ruby's journey will not be easy, but with allies like you, I have no doubt she will rise to the challenge."

The group exchanged resolute glances, their purpose clear. Ruby's power might hold the key to their survival, and they were ready to stand by her side every step of the way.

As they rounded the corner, a sudden portal tore through the air ahead of them, its swirling energy radiating an ominous red glow. The unexpected sight startled Qrow, who stumbled backward and landed hard on the ground.

"Agh... Damn it!" Qrow groaned, rubbing his back. His eyes fell to his flask, now lying on its side, precious beer trickling out.

"My beer..." Qrow muttered with an almost heartbroken tone as he scrambled to save what little remained.

Team JNPR instinctively drew their weapons, forming a defensive stance around Qrow.

"What is that?!" Jaune exclaimed, eyes fixed on the portal.

Before anyone could act further, Ozpin—now in control of Oscar's body—raised a hand to calm them. "Stand down, children. There's no need for alarm. It's Raven. She's here."

"Raven?!" Nora blurted, lowering her hammer but keeping her eyes fixed on the portal.

As if summoned by Ozpin's words, a foot stepped through the swirling vortex, followed by the unmistakable figure of Raven Branwen. Her sharp gaze swept over the group before settling on her brother, still on the ground, cradling his now-empty flask.

She crossed her arms and looked down at him with a raised brow. "You're pathetic, Qrow."

Qrow glanced up, his expression shifting from annoyance to mild exasperation. "Great. Just what I needed—family drama."

Raven ignored the jab, her tone curt and direct. "We need to talk."

Qrow sighed, getting to his feet and brushing off his coat. "This couldn't have waited until after I finished my drink?"

"No." Raven's gaze flicked toward the rest of the group, her presence commanding the air around her. "This is important."

Ozpin's expression grew more serious as he studied Raven, his calm voice cutting through the tension. "Then perhaps we should hear what she has to say."

Jaune, Pyrrha, Nora, and Ren exchanged uncertain glances but slowly lowered their weapons. The charged atmosphere persisted, the presence of Raven Branwen keeping them on edge.

Raven's sharp eyes swept over the group, pausing on Oscar. Something about him gnawed at her instincts, a flicker of recognition she couldn't quite place.

Her gaze narrowed. "And who's the kid?"

Qrow, now back on his feet and brushing dirt off his coat, shrugged nonchalantly. "Oh, about him? Yeah, he's Ozpin." He said it as casually as one might comment on the weather, taking a quick sip from his flask and grimacing at how little was left.

Raven's expression didn't falter, though her eyes darkened slightly. "Ozpin." Her voice was low, laced with restrained venom.

Ozpin inclined his head politely. "Raven."

For a moment, the two stared at each other, a silent tension passing between them. Then Raven turned back to Qrow, her tone sharp. "They just went to those cave coordinates you handed off to Leo. Let's just say... they're not thrilled about it."

Qrow's casual demeanor shifted, guilt creeping into his expression as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Wait, seriously? Uh... okay. How about their recent plans? You got anything for us?"

Raven's eyes narrowed, her tone sharp. "I disabled the right wing of their ship. They're stranded in the middle of a dense forest. For now, they have no choice but to fix it, but don't underestimate them. Once that ship is operational, they'll be on the move—and they won't waste time."

The group's expressions hardened, the gravity of her words sinking in.

"Understood," Qrow said, nodding firmly.

Raven's gaze lingered on him, scrutinizing. "Did you gather any huntsmen yet?"

Qrow let out a small sigh, his voice tinged with weariness. "Yeah, we've got a few. Not as many as we'd like, though. Rinko's group didn't have much better luck finding huntsmen, but they did manage to recruit someone... unconventional."

Raven raised an eyebrow. "Unconventional?"

Qrow hesitated briefly, then took a reluctant sip from his battered flask. "Yeah. A former leader of the White Fang. Sienna Khan."

Raven's expression remained unreadable as she repeated the name. "Sienna Khan?"

Qrow gave a half-shrug. "Better than nothing, right? The kid's doing what he can."

Raven crossed her arms, her stance skeptical but not dismissive. "If she's serious about helping, she'd better be ready for what's coming."

Ozpin's voice cut in, calm but purposeful. "Sienna's inclusion may prove valuable. Her knowledge of the White Fang's structure and operations could provide us with critical insight into Salem's network."

Raven's eyes flicked back to Oscar—no, to Ozpin—her sharp gaze dissecting him before shifting her attention back to Qrow.

"Gather what you can," she said curtly. "I may have bought you some time, but it's less than you think. You need to be ready."

Qrow nodded, his usual sarcasm replaced by rare seriousness. "We know. Believe me, we know."

Calavera's Backyard

"ERGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Ruby groaned, the strain evident in her voice as she clenched her fists. Her silver eyes fluttered open, shimmering faintly, but the anticipated burst of light and power refused to manifest.

Maria Calavera stood a few steps away, observing with arms crossed and an unimpressed expression. "You're trying too hard, kid," she said, her tone sharp but instructive. "You can't force it out like a sneeze. Focus."

Ruby let out a frustrated sigh, her shoulders slumping. "But I am focusing! I've been focusing this whole time, and nothing's happening!"

"Clearly not the right kind of focus," Maria retorted, taking a step closer. "Your eyes aren't just some tool you can turn on and off. They're tied to your emotions—your instincts. You've got to feel the need, not just think it."

Weiss watched from the sidelines, her arms folded as she exchanged a glance with Yang, who leaned casually against a nearby tree.

"Looks like Ruby's having a hard time with this," Yang muttered under her breath.

"No surprise," Weiss replied, her voice quiet but tinged with concern. "It's a power she's barely even scratched the surface of. It's not like we have a manual for this."

Rinko Schnee, sitting on a small wooden bench near the house, observed silently. His sharp blue eyes were fixed on Ruby, analyzing every movement, every attempt she made to unlock the power within her.

Maria's voice cut through Ruby's thoughts again, sharp and precise, like a blade striking a target. "Let me ask you this, Ruby: why do you want to use your silver eyes?"

Ruby froze, the question catching her off guard. She stared at Maria, her silver eyes wide and uncertain. "Why?" she echoed, stalling for time as she scrambled for an answer. "I... I don't know!" Her voice rose with frustration, her hands clenching at her sides. "I just found out they're special! I've spent my whole life thinking my eyes were normal—that they couldn't do anything other than see!"

Maria's expression didn't waver. She stepped closer, her one good eye boring into Ruby's. "And now that you know they're more than just pretty little ornaments, what are you going to do about it?"

Ruby opened her mouth to respond but faltered, no words coming to mind. She looked at the ground, her boots scuffing the dirt as she struggled to process her emotions. "I don't know," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I don't even know what I'm supposed to feel about all of this. It's like... I've been handed this huge responsibility, but no one told me how to carry it."

Maria sighed, her tone softening just a fraction. "Ruby, your silver eyes are more than just a weapon. They're a symbol of something greater—a connection to a power older than any of us. But you can't tap into that power if you don't understand why you want to use it."

Ruby's head shot up, her silver eyes shimmering faintly in the fading sunlight. "I do want to use them!" she insisted, her voice trembling with desperation. "I want to protect everyone I care about! I want to make sure no one else gets hurt!"

Maria studied her for a moment, her expression unreadable. "That's a start," she said finally, her voice low but firm. "But it's not enough."

Ruby's shoulders slumped, confusion and frustration bubbling to the surface. "What do you mean? Isn't protecting the people I love enough?"

Maria shook her head, stepping even closer. "No, it's not. Your silver eyes aren't just for protecting your friends and family—they're for protecting life itself. Every life, even the ones you don't know. Even the ones you might not think deserve it."

Ruby blinked, the weight of Maria's words settling over her like a heavy cloak. "Every life..." she murmured, her gaze distant as she tried to wrap her head around the concept.

Maria nodded. "The power of the silver eyes isn't about hate, anger, or even love. It's about purity. A drive to preserve and protect what's good in the world, no matter the cost to yourself. That's why they only work when your heart is in the right place."

Ruby's chest tightened, a mixture of awe and fear swirling within her. "How am I supposed to live up to that?" she asked, her voice barely audible.

Maria's voice cut through Ruby's spiraling thoughts like a blade, sharp and unwavering.

"Okay then.. How about this," she said, her tone deliberate, each word carefully chosen. "Have you ever experienced something traumatic—like almost losing a family member? Think about Yang. Imagine Yang is on the brink of death, and a Grimm is about to finish her off."

Ruby froze, the vivid scenario Maria painted rooting her to the spot.

"What are you going to do about it?" Maria pressed, her voice unrelenting. "Your legs are broken, you can barely lift your arm, and Crescent Rose is out of reach. Are you going to let her die?"

Ruby's breath hitched, the question slicing through her like a dagger. Her mind betrayed her, pulling her back to moments she wished she could forget.

The train incident. She could still hear the deafening roar of the collapsing cars, the suffocating fear when she saw Yang in Raven's crosshairs, the helplessness of knowing her sister was seconds away from death.

And then, Adam. The way his attack gleamed under the moonlight, the sickening sound of steel cutting through flesh.

The way Yang screamed.

Ruby's heart ached at the memory of her sister lying broken and bloodied on the ground, her arm severed, her strength stolen.

Ruby clenched her fists, tears streaming down her cheeks as these memories clawed at her. Each one was a painful reminder of her failure to protect Yang. A reminder of the times she'd been powerless when it mattered most.

A warmth began to build in her chest, a light flickering to life deep within her. It was faint, but it grew with every beat of her heart, every memory of Yang's laughter, her strength, her love.

Ruby looked up, her eyes now glowing a brilliant silver. The light reflected the fiery determination that had replaced her despair.

Rinko, Weiss, Yang, and Selene watched in awe as Ruby's tears continued to fall, her glowing eyes illuminating the dimming backyard.

Maria's expression softened, the faintest hint of a smile tugging at her lips.

"There it is," Maria whispered, her voice filled with pride. "That's the power of your silver eyes, Ruby. Now, you've finally found it."

Ruby wiped her tears, her glowing eyes never wavering. Her voice was shaky but filled with newfound determination. "I'll protect her," she said softly. "I'll protect everyone."

Maria stepped closer, her gaze steady. "Good. Now let's make sure you never forget what that feels like. Because this power? It's yours to wield. All you need is the heart to use it."

Ruby nodded, a faint smile breaking through her tears.

For the first time, Ruby felt as though she truly understood the power of her silver eyes—not merely as a weapon, but as a manifestation of her love, her strength, and her unwavering resolve to protect. The realization was profound, and the weight of it settled deeply within her chest.

It wasn't just a power—it was a part of who she was.

Rinko watched her with a quiet smile, his sharp eyes gleaming with something akin to approval. She had made remarkable progress in such a short time—less than a full day of training, and Ruby had already begun to unlock the surface of the silver eyes' true potential.

His gaze softened, the thought crossing his mind with unexpected clarity: Interesting.

There was more to Ruby's silver eyes than mere power. He could see the deep, untapped well of potential, not just in her abilities, but in the heart behind them.

Whatever path she walked from here on out, it would shape her into someone formidable. And Rinko, despite his usual indifference, felt a quiet respect for what Ruby had accomplished. It wasn't often that someone managed to find such strength in themselves so quickly.

It was a subtle but telling shift—one that didn't go unnoticed.
