Chapter 4: Earning Trust
The ruins of Novi Grad stretched out under the cold, pale light of the moon. Wanda Maximoff crouched behind a crumbling wall, her crimson eyes scanning the Hydra outpost ahead. The structure loomed ominously, surrounded by barbed wire and patrolling guards. Floodlights swept across the perimeter, their harsh beams slicing through the darkness.
Beside her, Eska Vryn adjusted the straps of her worn utility vest. Her blue eyes flicked toward Wanda, sharp with suspicion but laced with curiosity. "So, what's the plan, magic girl?" she asked, her voice low but biting.
Wanda glanced at Eska, the faintest hint of a smirk tugging at her lips. "First, I'll take down their main defenses. You handle the turrets. After that, I'll make sure Hydra has bigger problems than intercepting your communications."
Eska snorted softly. "Confident, aren't you? Just don't blow up half the city while you're at it."
"I'll try to keep the collateral damage to a minimum," Wanda replied dryly.
"Try harder," Eska muttered, pulling out a pair of binoculars to survey the area.
Wanda's grip tightened on the Chitauri Scepter as she allowed her chaos magic to stir. The symbiote's voice whispered in her mind, calm and measured. They will not see you coming. Strike quickly, and the rest will follow.
"You ready?" Wanda asked, her tone steady.
Eska nodded, tucking the binoculars away. "As I'll ever be. Let's see if you're all talk."
Wanda stepped into the open, her chaos magic flickering around her hands. The guards at the gate froze, their weapons raised as they shouted into their radios. She raised the scepter, and with a burst of energy, the gate exploded inward, sending debris and Hydra soldiers scattering.
Sirens blared, and floodlights swung toward her. Wanda advanced, her crimson energy crackling in the air. Bullets flew toward her, but she deflected them with a flick of her wrist, her barrier shimmering like liquid fire.
Eska darted toward the side of the outpost, her movements quick and precise. She climbed onto a nearby structure, positioning herself near one of the automated turrets. With practiced ease, she pulled out a small device and began hacking into its control panel.
"Keep them busy, Maximoff!" Eska called out, her voice laced with urgency.
Wanda didn't need encouragement. She unleashed a wave of chaos magic, hurling it toward a group of approaching soldiers. They scrambled for cover, their shouts drowned out by the explosion that followed.
The symbiote's voice coiled around her thoughts like smoke. Faster. Stronger. Leave no one standing.
"I'm working on it," Wanda muttered under her breath.
One of the soldiers broke away from the group, aiming a rocket launcher directly at her. Wanda's eyes narrowed as she raised the scepter, intercepting the missile mid-air. The projectile froze for a heartbeat before she redirected it back toward its origin. The resulting blast rocked the ground beneath her feet, sending Hydra forces sprawling.
Eska gritted her teeth as the turret's controls resisted her hacking attempts. Sparks flew from the panel, and she cursed under her breath. The sounds of battle raged behind her—explosions, gunfire, and the unmistakable hum of Wanda's magic.
"Come on, come on," Eska muttered, her fingers flying over the controls.
Finally, the turret powered down, its mechanical whirring silenced. Eska allowed herself a brief moment of satisfaction before moving to the next one. She glanced back at Wanda, who was now facing a squad of Hydra soldiers armed with energy weapons.
"She's actually holding her own," Eska murmured, a note of grudging respect in her voice.
Wanda could feel the power coursing through her veins, the symbiote amplifying her every move. Her magic surged as she deflected another volley of energy blasts, her anger fueling her precision.
One soldier lunged at her, a baton crackling with electricity in his hand. Wanda sidestepped, her movements smooth and calculated. She swung the scepter in a wide arc, sending the soldier flying into a stack of crates.
"Is this all you've got?" Wanda taunted, her voice cutting through the chaos.
More soldiers poured out of the outpost, their reinforcements arriving with heavy artillery. Wanda's jaw tightened as she assessed the situation. She couldn't afford to be overwhelmed—not when she was so close to proving herself.
They are nothing. You are stronger than all of them combined, the symbiote urged.
"I know," Wanda said softly. "But I'm not invincible."
Eska finished disabling the final turret, her chest heaving as she caught her breath. She turned back to the battlefield, her eyes widening as she saw a group of Hydra soldiers attempting to flank Wanda.
"Maximoff, on your left!" Eska shouted.
Wanda spun just in time, her chaos magic flaring as she intercepted the ambush. The ground beneath the soldiers erupted, sending them sprawling. Wanda shot Eska a quick nod of thanks before turning her attention back to the main force.
Eska joined the fight, her pistol snapping off precise shots as she covered Wanda's flank. The two women moved in sync, their combined efforts overwhelming Hydra's forces.
"Not bad for a magic girl," Eska quipped as she reloaded.
"Not bad for a skeptic," Wanda shot back, a faint smile tugging at her lips.
The battle ended as suddenly as it had begun. The last of the Hydra soldiers retreated into the night, their once-imposing numbers reduced to scattered remnants. Wanda stood in the center of the chaos, her chest rising and falling as she caught her breath. The Chitauri Scepter's glow dimmed, its energy settling.
Eska approached, brushing dust off her jacket. "Well, I'll admit it—you've got skills. And you didn't blow up half the city."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Wanda said, her tone dry but amused.
Eska extended a hand, her blue eyes meeting Wanda's. "You've earned this. Welcome to the resistance."
Wanda hesitated for a moment before shaking Eska's hand. "Thank you. But this is just the beginning."
Eska smirked. "I wouldn't have it any other way."
As they made their way back to the resistance headquarters, Wanda couldn't help but feel a flicker of hope. For the first time in a long while, she wasn't fighting alone. Eska's grudging respect and Dmitri's calm confidence gave her a sense of belonging she hadn't realized she needed.
The symbiote's voice was quiet, almost approving. You are building something here. Something that will grow.
Wanda's grip on the scepter tightened. "I just hope it's enough."
